Started replaying Might and Magic 6 a week or two ago... and it's *amazing* how I suddenly seem to lose track of time when I'm playing! I'm kind of glad I'm on the road this week because I have a better than average chance of getting to sleep before 2AM
I'm not quite sure what the game has that does that to me, but it's something I haven't seen for a while in the newer games that have been coming out. Anyone else have gaming experiences like this lately? Just curious.... |
I got hooked on the 256 colour remake of the original Quest for Glory a while back. And Hexen still blows my mind.
|
Ive been replaying heroes of might and magic 3, with the sword of death add on which is new to me.
totally addicting 6 when heroes and mm were at their height they were what was happening. I never did play mm 6 btw just 7 and 8 maybe i should someday |
Bungleau, your mm6 got any music? I've tried to replay mine but only got sound ( footstep , spells , yells etc ) but no music.
Currently I'm replaying mm8 ( no problem with this game ). Now going to regna to destroy pirates ships. :D |
I do have music, Kakero. Just reinstalled it a couple of weeks ago and did a full install, applying the 1.2 patch with the 1.1 DaveO fix. I forget the details, but there's something that's broken in the 1.2 patch that the 1.1 .exe file will fix.
I'm anxious to get home tonight for the first chance to play in almost a week. I'm in February and just made the Wizard ascension.... the knight, druid, and cleric are still waiting for their ascensions. Have fun in Regna! Kind of neat how it stays hidden until the end... :D |
hah, M&M games creep me out with the character graphics changing as they get poisoned, cursed, etc. I can see where you Wizards and Warriors fans cut your teeth though (or maybe sharpened them?)
I do this frequently Bungleau. It shows us that graphics, sound, multiplayer aspects aren't the end-all for gaming. I recently played Betrayal at Krondor, Quest for Glory 1 EGA (So, Sever wants to be a Hero too?), and Death Knights of Krynn. If I could afford to lose the time, I'd reinstall Master of Magic and subsequently lose chunks of 4-5 hours and not even realize it |
i LOVE mm6... i'm replaying it, too.
go to Redneck's MM6 Tavern and get Mok's patch. it helps with the sound problem. the only thing i wish is that the mm6 in-game taverns had arcomage. mm7 spoiled me forever. Yea, Arcomage! One of the most fun games within a game that ever existed!
You guys know the history of that? In case you don't, rumor has it that the 3DO developers were spending a lot of time playing Arcomage, so they decided to stick it into the game and make a quest out of it. There was so much demand for it that they brought it out as a stand-alone game... And I know what you mean about the faces Just finished Ethric's Tomb, and all four characters were diseased. All green and nasty... yeeuk! Had to run over to the Baa temple to get 'em healed, I did... we've got fly now, so travel is much easier. And as soon as we can, we'll get to water master and dump our gatemaster NPC... |
Ahh..Arcomage. I remember I was one of the poster in 3do community board who wanted 3do to make Arcomage a stand alone game. :D
Careful of going to temple of baa for healing, it'll lower your reputation. Not good if you are going for saintly status in order to master light magic. I'm now going to the elemental places. However, the sudden feeling of " been there done that " now strikes me. Maybe I should stop for a while. Btw, what do you do if an area respawn? Do you go ahead and clear it or do you just leave it? Or do you cast Armageddon? ;) Shadowspire critters just respawned and I'm very tempted to use Armageddon to clear the whole place out. :D |
shadowspire? nuke 'em. respawns there are a pain.
*remembers* the first time i EVER played, i found the stables and the nice man offered to take my level 1 group to shadowspire. i was happy that we could travel around and took him up on the offer. lol! we were massacred the minute we got there. it took a LONG time before i trusted the stablemaster ever again. V***V |
Seems to me that the temple only dropped your rep if you donated, not if you got healed. I'll have to pay attention...
I did discover something that I hadn't seen before. Perception actually does something useful in MM6! Remember all the useless crystals you can find? Well, if your perception is high enough, they will turn into gems when you search them. If it's too low, they are useless. And if you come back later with higher perception, they can be picked up as gems :D As for shadowspire... well, armageddon would also kill all the townsfolks, so that may not be the best idea. I don't remember... do starburst and meteor shower exist in v8? They would be ideal... And for me, the fact that you can go to a super-advanced area in the MM games is a plus. That's one of the things I don't like about W&W -- it's flexible, but in a linear sort of way. |
Really? well blow me down. I thought in mm6 the perception skill is as useless as diplomacy. But still it doesn't work as what the skill description said. Go to castle darkmoor and see traps will sprung out of nowhere and blow up right at your face.
It's great you can visit high level places earlier in mm6. I remember one time I just press a wall somewhere in New Sorpigal and I end up in Dragonsand. yikes!! |
I recently replayed Ultima 7 part 2 Serpent Isle. Fantastic! Limited in terms of character (i.e. stats etc.) and story options and so on, but the detail that made up the Ultima universe is so amazingly immense. The story is so rich and the characters are really well developed. I definitely *made* time to play rather than just playing when I had time to kill. Now I'm hankering to play Ultima Underworld again...
|
I'm going back and playing Might % Magic 3--Isles of Terra. Absolutely primitive graphics, but great gameplay.
P.S. It runs just fine on Win 98. |
Hmmm... DBear, you've made me think that I may just want to keep a Win98 box around just for those golden oldies. I replayed MM4-5 a couple of years ago -- man, was it easy when only three monsters could attack you at a time!
Although my first CRPG was MM1, which I played through to its conclusion, and I've played every one since, I think that I failed to complete either MM2 or MM3... that Win98 box may be just the ticket to go do that. :D Just going to have to get a three-machine or more KVM switch... I've got a two-way now for my main PC and my Linux box. More power... |
I have never had a problem running old games on my computer which is running Windows XP Pro. I have never seen the compatability function work, so I just go to the executable file and manually change all of the memory appropriatly (usually so that all are automatically allocated). The games always work like a champ.
Of course, my computer was made for Windows 98, so it may be wired in a way that does not conflict with old games. I have to admit, although today's graphics are far better than anything in the past, I find that almost all of the games on my computer are from 1992 and before. I still think that game designers knew that graphics alone would not sell games, so they had to make sure that the content would satisfy thier customers--and I am one who couldn't give a rip about graphics, as long as the game was good. |

Of course, you do have to survive about 2 seconds with the dragons... |
Never had the dragons as an issue after the first time in. Go into turn-based mode before touching on the wall, and once you've landed, run as fast as you can into the shrine. Touch the special critter, then the wall to get in.
On the way out, do the same thing. Turn-based mode, then leave the dungeon. Spin right, and then run to the wall to hit the New Sorpigal teleport back. Save early and often, though... sometimes, that teleport spot isn't quite where you'd expect.... :D |
I never knew there was a New Sorpigal town portal back...I always banked on finding a gate master (as normally I head to Mist with a few thousand gold to buy skills).
|
Yeppers... amazing that you can still learn new things on an old game, isn't it?
I just had a thought strike me... the armageddon spell, which delivers damage to everything on the map, will really hammer your reputation if you slay some peasants with it. I read somewhere that when you hire a peasant (NPC), they don't come back. So if New Sorpigal starts out with 30 peasants, if you hire and fire all of them, there will be no peasants at all. So.... if you do that in a problem area, you could clear the place so that you could cast armageddon without losing any reputation! Now, to see if that's practical anywhere... |
In all honesty once I hit saintly status for light master, I normally cast Armageddon on purpose to go to notorious.
Important point in that game...always go for saintly reputation first. [ 10-13-2005, 10:41 AM: Message edited by: dregnus ] |
I was able to go from saintly to notorious in three easy steps without having to kill *anything*!
Here's how: Step 1: Go to a temple of Baa and donate about ten times. That should bring you to a level below Average. Step 2: Go to Castle Kriegspire and talk to the.. Guardian, I think it is. Accept his help / offer, and you'll drop down a couple more levels. Step 3: Go to Bootleg Bay and pick up all those bones you've been leaving there. Teleport to Free Haven (the Rockport suburb, actually) and turn them in. You'll be notorious in about five minutes, depending on your beacons. :D 'Course, if you haven't set beacons in Kriegspire and Bootleg Bay, it will be far more difficult... :D |
since we are talking about the M&M series, I just have to ask... have someone ever played M&M9 ??... a have almost played through 6,7,8 and 9. but have never completed the last Q`s , don`t know why, and can`t even remember what quests remained.... but what do you guys think about M&M9?? cause that game is just....strange! I saw it for the first time with a friend but it took me 15 minutes to recognize that it was a M&M game!!! thought it was a bad and newer game that was based on M&M but looked like shit!.... but still i couldn`t resist to play... cause if one is a M&M fan, then you will always be one....!
why don`t 3do make an M&M 10 ?? or why don`t they try to make m&m 6,7,8 and 9 with same rules but better graphics, and same story but with better movements and maybe they should try to make an expansion pack?!.-...... does anyone have something to say about this ? or do you just think i`m a complete moron? or both? |
well, as 3D0 doesn't exist anymore, that won't be possible. however, you'd do well to check out the upcoming M&M Tribute game!! it's gonna be great :D
if anyone's an old-timer, you'll recognize most of the fan/developers who are designing this. main site: http://www.mmtribute.castlegobs.nl/ main forums: http://www.castlegobs.nl/forums/index.php?act=idx V***V |
As the lovely Vesselle has pointed out, 3DO exists no more. So sadly, they won't be putting out MM10.
However, someone (was it EA?) acquired the rights to the MM series in a fire sale, and the possibility exists that someone else may bring out an MM10 game. We can only hope.... and I say that because MM1 was my first CRPG, and you never forget your first There's still a whole lot of support out there from the old 3DO communities... folks like DaveO, Ribannah, Flamestryke, CoolJerk, and more. TELP is still out there (www.telp.org), and they've got sections for M7-9. They reference MM6 in passing, but there's still stuff available (and it's what I'm playing right now, as the thread title shows... I'm getting ready for the Castle Darkmoor grind). And if you have questions, feel free to ask them in here as well. I know there are a few other MM fans who hang out around here as well :D I'm looking forward to the MM Tribute as well. Things like Gray Magic that Ribannah and folks have developed are just fantastic from this gamer's perspective :D |
hmm obviously.... i didn`t know that 3DO doesn`t exist anymore... damn ... well the first game i played of 3do was heroes 1.... and when i heard that there was a rpg game of heroes i started to play it right away... and that was m&m 6... but i don`t have that game anymore... and since i`m from norway , i can`t find m&m6 in any gaming stores....
well i haven`t checked in oslo( where the greatest stores are..) but if somebody know where i can get/buy m&m6 then it would be greatful.. .. i think i need the UK version..( or does that have anything to say..) haven`t searched the web .. but do sombody know how i can get one easy? thanks |
You can buy it online... and there were several compilations that included MM6-9 or MM6-8. I believe Amazon has it, among others.
It should be fairly inexpensive. On a side note, I completed Darkmoor last night. It ended up being far less painful than I remembered... I was able to "herd" the eyes and liches to come into narrow doorways in many of the areas, and even the final castle-within-a-castle section was pretty easy. I used a new technique (for me, at least)... Basically, when I went up the outside ramp, I stopped right in the corner leading to the huge room and hopped onto the ledge. A number of eyes and liches woke up and attacked, but by casting Inferno I was able to damage most of them every time. The cleric cast Destroy Undead on the various liches to knock them out. And if any eyes grouped together, a dragonbreath or two took care of them. Even the lich king was easy... several destroy undeads, and he was gone. My party (KDCS) is level 70, and had used the 30-level well (and I'm going to have to clean out those drakes soon!). The only time I had to take a break was when I ran out of mana... *Sniff* The game's almost over, though. Just Hermit Isle and SweetWater to go, followed by the pyramid and control center. It's been enjoyable, just the same... :D [ 10-26-2005, 12:11 PM: Message edited by: Bungleau ] |
damn... it`s good to hear people who is a fan of might & magic... cause i don`t know anyone from my place which even know what it is... i remember the feeling of playing m&m for the first time.... a great feeling=)... hope it`s the same when i`m playing again=)
anyway , thanks bungleau=) |
I know the feeling, Bakrus. Heck, in MM1 there was a question that you couldn't answer with anything in the game, AFAIK... Og's question. I remember figuring out where you had to go to find the answer, and a friend's wife grabbing their video collection, watching a particular episode of Star Trek, and giving me the answer. Now *that* was fun!
Out here, you'll find that Vesselle and Kakero, in addition to me, are MM fans. I know there are others, and I apologize to you all, but they're the other ones who stick in my mind right now. Heck... MM is even in the logo for the Misc Games forum -- a true sign of recognition if there ever was one BTW, I cleared out the land portion of Hermit Isle last night. Lots of ICBM spellcasting, and I'm ready to go to the seas and island next. Thanks to the randomness of the game, my tank is wielding dual Excaliburs (one from the stone and one from random treasure), and my sorcerer is wielding dual Mordreds (or is it Morgans?) -- one from the Keep, and one from random treasure. My biggest challenge is running out of inventory space... |
well it`s one of the greatest games of the rpg genre.. well one thing thats cool is that in m&m6 was quest about a prince nicholas who had run away with a circus... and i found him again in m&m9 as an drunkard in the streets in a viking city.. have you played m&m9 Bungleau? what do you think about it?..
and by the way Bungleau, where have you got your nick name from?.. it was kinda.. rare.. don`t think i have heard it before.. i got mine from baldurs gate.. cause it means something else on norwegian....... |
I figure I might as well jump in for advice here - I picked up the M&M 6-9 collection a few years back and never got around to playing it until now. 6 didn't work on my PC, so I started with 7. Paladin, Archer, Cleric and Sorcerer for starters - but for some reason I'm having a lot of trouble while doing my treasure hunt. 3 of my party members are diseased from running into a group of vampire bats going to the Moon Temple, I've been wasted by Dragonflies & Rats, etc. All my guys are still level one, and I'm too poor to afford potions of cure disease. Any cheap advice for a beginner?
|
Been a long time since I played 7.
Essential start for any Might and Magic game is to get the bow skill for as many characters as possible (as they'll start with the bow), and buy bows and the skill for the ones that don't have it. That makes the flies outside the city far easier to kill. Generally speaking, everything at that point in the game is easier to kill from a long distance with a bow (or at least weaken up). A few levels in the future and your melee fighters will be strong enough to dish out pain, and your spell casters will have enough mp/spell points to do some serious damage. |

be right back :D heh i'm having my cleric make the potions, even tho she can't specialize in it. buy empty bottles from the discount store and collect all those red, yellow and blue herbs lying on the ground. save your game and take a teammate (in mine it's my cleric, who is limited in what potions she can create), and pop one of the red ones into a bottle. *voila* you now have a health potion. that's a "simple" potion. to make a cure disease, you need to be able to make a "compound" potion (that's mixing 2 simple potions). in the case of cure disease (an orange potion), you mix a red potion with a yellow potion. a cure poison (a purple potion) is something you're gonna need too... mix a red with a blue. i advise you several things, in no particular order: 1) save before making potions. sometimes you get "spectacular" results when you mess up :D 2) are you trying to get the dragon? or just doing the local dungeons? anyway, that's none of my business. if you're still on the isle, just concentrate on finding the stuff for the treasure hunt and if you're in a dungeon for awhile, come up for air to decide what things you're gonna keep, what things you're gonna sell and then go spend your money on things that'll keep you alive. like potions and skills and training. 3) use your terrain and "helpers" when you're fighting the dragonflies around the shops. run towards guards if you get overwhelmed. 4) check out the wells around town. drink from them. they help. you can also buy healing from the healer's tent if you've got lotsa dough to spend. i never do, unless i've come back with goodies from the dragon's den and can afford it. oh yeah! rest!! that's a cheap source of getting your health back. oh yeah. yer gonna love harmondale. V***V *hopes she hasn't spoiled you* |
oh yeah, btw, one of the best forums for the M&M games is still around. The Erathian Liberation Party has forums for MM6-9. there are still a bunch of us diehards who play regularly and post there.
they're hosting a great patch (Mok's patch) that may even help you get MM6 up and running. it works for MM7, too. have fun!! :D V***V http://telp.org/mm7/tavern/mm7tavern.html PS: i forgot one of the best things about MM7! (besides getting a castle).... ARCOMAGE!! now you did it! i haveta put MM6 aside for a bit and play some MM7!! [ 10-28-2005, 02:48 PM: Message edited by: vesselle ] |
Thanks! I've been checking the wells, and found 1000 gold, but spent it all on skills for something right away.
Tried to get the dragon right off, and it was ugly. Once I can get through the darn bats I'll rethink big red. I can mix easy potions at least, so I'll try to piece together some disease ones tonight (while keeping my fingers crossed)... |
oooh, ooooh!
know the pedestal out near the dragon's lair? it boosts your stats. i always have my party touch it, then run into the cave and pick off the rats at the entrance. then with the stat boost still active, run around the dragon, go in and out of turn-based mode, to pick up stuff i see lying around. i'm not ashamed to bolt out when we've been scorched either and come back a little later for more goodies. i may be a weird minority, but i don't feel right killing off a dragon. anyway, have fun and always check the wells. also don't forget, if you ever see something in the world that's capitalized (like Buoy instead of buoy or Tree instead of tree) click it! NWC devs loved stashing all kinds of goodies away for us. :D V***V |
for starters it`s best to have a warrior, archer, cleric and a sorceress, because then can almost at least one of your characters can specialize in the most important skills in the game.. and you get also two characters thats very good with spells and two exceptional fighters with bow , to keep your foes at a distance.....
well i`m at a party now so talk to you later guy`s , and i shall beginn to play M&M9 tomorrow since it have been so long since last time... =) so I`ll get drunk and so should you too=)cheers m8's!!!!!!!!!!! |
Actually, it was Ubisoft that bought the M&M franchise. They're working on Heroes V.
And on lowering rep in MM6 without being "evil"--I also kill the thralls in Temple of the Snake. I think of it as a mercy, really. |
LOL! Vesselle, you are SPOT ON about Arcomage! There were nights I booted the computer to play MM7 just to play Arcomage! Many hours did I spend... :D
And Bakrus, my nick comes from my first thief character in a CRPG. Knowing the abilities of most first-level characters, I realized he'd probably bungle just about everything he tried to do. So that became his name... but to make it more interesting (than, say, Morris the Monk, chosen solely for alliteration), I frankified Bungle and turned it into Bungleau... pronounced just like the English word "bungalow". Marathon, remember that while you're participating in the treasure hunt, you *can* train to higher levels. Pretty much every thing you bring back should raise you a level. Vesselle's already given you the thoughts on mixing potions and looking for Capitalized Objects (I think there's a Rock not too far from the docks, toward the north side on the shore). Healing at the temple will cure everything that ails you, but for a fee. Distance combat is *always* your best choice. Oh, and if you feel like it, look around for a certain peasant named Mr. Malwyck. He may have an offer you can't refuse... :D I think I prefer a druid in my starting party instead of an archer. The ability to mix black potions later on is very, very valuable... far more than anything the archer offers. But that's my opinion only, and the game lets you play however you'd like. Although there is something for having that archer who *starts* with a bow.... |

i can be SO bad. to get black potions, i camp the shops and aggressively load and reload to get the stat-boosting black potions i want. uh huh. every last one of my RP-ing instincts are put on hold during black potion searches. V***V |
