Any recommendations ? Just got a new all singing and dancing Alienware machine. I prefer First Person View (or as close to it as possible)Not really a fan of views as in BG etc.
I looked at Arx Fatalis but it seems it probably wont run on newer Nvidia drivers, Dungeon Lords seems unfinished. Please dont suggest any like WoW or EQ as I have those, I am interested in single player only....someting like the old Daggerfall or Legends of Valour. Played Morrowind and I'm after any newer games, fantasy preferred. Thanks in advance |
Morrowind, Vampire: Bloodlines, Deus Ex(1, not 2, definetly not 2), System Shock 2 if you feel a bit nostalgia in urself. And the new Project Snowblind is said to be an action Deus Ex derivative, and it's highly prased.

Any of the Might and Magic games 6-9 qualify as first person, although they are party based and not single player. They are more light hearted than your average cRPG, but still worthy. I only finished III, IX and Swords of Xeen recently and have had alot of fun in doing so.
I'd keep trying to get Arx Fatalis going, don't give up on it, as it is a brilliant game. Visit more forums, perhaps try it on an older machine. If you can't, then play the Ultima Underworld's instead, since they are its heart and soul anyway. ;) I also have a soft spot for games like Stonekeep and Anvil of Dawn, which along with the Underworlds, helped really push the First Person Perspective rpg forward. I'm actually playing the demo of the Bard's Legacy: Devil Whiskey at the moment, which is a modern day bard's tale homage, with a slightly expanded first person view and list interface. Its proving to be a very nostalgic experience thus far. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find something. Cheers, CerebroDragon |
There aren't many 1st person RPG's newer than Morrowind. Vampires: Bloodlines is the only one I can think of right now.
|
Wizardry 8 isn't for everybody, but it's technically 1st person perspective.
Edit: I just had to express my jealousy at your Alienware computer. I like my computer well enough, but it sure don't do no singin' or dancin'. Congrats. [ 05-16-2005, 05:10 PM: Message edited by: Mr. Mopery ] |
ya from your description i think you want vampire bloodlines. It looks the best of any first person rpg. it uses the half life 2 engine.
However as much as i liked bloodlines... half life 2 is way better its a really excellent game |
Thanks for the replies. Ive done MM series, Wizardry (dint like that one too much) and Morrowind. Anyone know if Arx works with the latest drivers on Nvidia?. Bloodlines sounds interesting but I'd much prefer high fantasy settings

America's Army, or at least it feels as long winded as a RPG.
|
LOL, AA isn't an rpg, or even like one. Its a shooter, its a hella boring shooter at times (training to be a medic anyone?), but still a shooter.
|
Oh then maybe check out the new game dungeon lords im having a lot of fun with it.
I liked arx too it was cool but a bit short for me. Oh but way way better is gothic 1 and gothic 2. If you can find those those are the best first person rpgs made. |
I think you'll find that the Gothic games are in fact Third Person Perspective, the mighty stamar and subsequently more like Ultima 9: Ascension.
Whilst Arx Fatalis was indeed short, there are many nice little subquests, secrets and even an easter egg in the game. It is definitely worth pursuing and played even more beautifully through the second time around. I suggest posting at the JoWood forums, TTLG forums or even to Arkane themselves regarding the question of its compatibility with your Nvidia drivers. Cheers, CD P.S: I've also recently dusted off Lands of Lore II: Guardians of Destiny and are intending to give it another shot after being previously turned off. Whilst it is not as good as the original, it is another game made in the tradition of the first person RPG. [ 05-22-2005, 01:34 AM: Message edited by: CerebroDragon ] |
Gothic (2) is the game you want.
And you can toggle to either 1st person or 3rd person. But I too am a 1st person perspective gamer but felt that the Gothic 2 design team really gave the game that 1st person immersion flavor that I hunger for in RPGs. Funny, but I ususally used the 3rd person POV unless I was in a dense forest or climbing a very narrow cliff edge. BTW, you can start with the more recent Gothic 2 and do just fine. I did that and was so impressed that I went backwards to Gothic 1. I loved both games. One thing to watch out for, the Gothic controls are not standard and take some getting used to. But the time is well worth it. A tremendous game. as far as dusting off the old gamers library. I delved into Might and Magic 7. And while the Brand New Dungeon Lords is missing a lot of features, it's still a fun game to play and will be really good after they get all their patches out. |
Guild Wars.
|
Guild Wars is in 3rd person view.
|
Even though they have already been mentioned, I wanted to add my agreement to those who said three GREAT games: Gothic 2 (and I guess 1 as well), Arx Fatalis, and Ultima Underworld. Those are awesome games!
Plus, unlike game like Morrowind and Daggerfall (both of which I happen to like), Gothic 2, Arx Fatalis, and Ultima Underworld do not drag on endlessly--there is actually a light at the end of the tunnel. |
Thanks for the replies. I enjoyed Gothic 1 but really prefer the high fantasy settings. Isnt Ultima Underworld an old DOS game?
|
Huwge
I make no apologies about being a huge Gothic Fanboy. It's the price I pay for being one of the first detractors. But if you enjoyed Gothic 1 chances are you will love Gothic 2. Better story, better controls, better graphics, bigger world. Just about everyone who's play both rate number 2 better. And many (me included) have rated Gothic 2 as one of the all time best RPGs ever. As far as the fantasy aspects, it has orcs, goblins, fire monsters, snow monsters, wizards, skeletins, magic, and dragons. It's missing elves and dwarves but to me there is enough high fantasy there to keep you happy. BTW, I installed for the first time Ultima Underworld two computers ago. I was an apple man when Ultima U. first came out so I missed the boat. But I got it cheap about 4 years ago and tried to give it a go. I am not a graphics whore by any means but I just couldn't get into it. too bad for me. |
Have a little patience... Elder Scrolls 4 and the next Gothic are coming up, and the screenshots promise total heaven.
|
I liked gothic better than gothic 2. Gothic 2 didnt really add anything but it made the world much larger which is good.
But gothic had a unique story and gothic 2 was standard sort of thing. Less grit. Also gothic had more voice actors and they were excellent. The same actors did gothic2 only fewer of them so all the people sound the same. Dungeon lords is fun... ok but its not nearly as good as either gothic game. Even if they do finish it... |
Yeah Stammer, Gothic 1 does have its advocates and they genearlly say what you say about 1 being more gritty than 2.
But I'm glad I played 2 first because then when I played 1, it was like going back in a time machine and looking at the past. I think I would have been a little sad if I played 1 first and then 2. For example weren't you sad when you saw one town was now the nest of a dragon. I, on the other hand saw the dragon nest first and then saw the town that exisited before. It was sorta neat. Still, just quibbles ehh. Both Gothics are great and I believe have changed the way quality CRPGS are going to be made. Oblivion is going to have NPC with full schedules and one of the features they talk about is how you can overhear some of their conversations. While Gothic had these feature years ago, it was actully No One Lives Forever who first mastered the overheard conversation technique. I can hardly wait for Oblivion and Gothic. It's too bad the Dungeon Lords folks weren't paying attention. |
Overhearing conversations isn't anything new in the CRPG world. You can do it in Ultima VII which was released way back in 1992, which I'd regard as being much more revolutionary than any of the aforementioned games, despite the fact that its an isometric game. Furthermore, it also had NPC schedules where people would work, have breaks, go home or go to the pub and then go to sleep and start all over again the next day.
I'm also enthusiastic about possibly getting my paws on the Gothic games, which I've heard only glowing reports about. However, try not to give away any spoilers on the games if possible - though its good to hear its fans talk about it! Being the chronlogical obsessive that I am, I'll be playing them in order too as I've done as closely as possible with the Ultima series. ;) I just hope Oblivion isn't as infuriatingly buggy as my experience of Morrowind was. I suffered far too many random freezes and CTDS - not that it really got too far in the way of the immersion factor. ;) So what first person game have you decided to go for, Huwge? Any more luck with Arx? Gather your knowledge well and you'll be rewarded! Cheers, Cerebrodragon P.S Another first person cRPG series I forgot to mention in my initial post were Lands of Lore I-III. I'm actually attempting to make inroads into the second game at the moment, although it is definitely not going to come near to the classic Eye of Beholder like dungeon adventure amalgam that was the original. |
Oh its very difficult to find gothic for sale in the us market good luck on that.
There was also a german language version of an expansion for gothic 2 called night of the raven which I have heard is very cool. People used a user made tool to convert it to work with the us version ( only in text not spoken) although I did not. I have heard that night of the raven is finally coming out in english though too. Yes Gothic used ultima nine as some inspiration as every person has a job a place to sleep a daily routine etc. It was sort of like ultima nine made more polished. It was more like what Ultima 9 should have been. I was one of those Ultima fans who was dissapointed with the way Ultima 9 turned out :( Mighty Stamar is right, though, it is pretty hard to find Gothic 1. Gothic 2 is easy to find on the internet, but #1 is more elusive.

Wow, I didnt expect this much discussion from my post. Gothic 2 sounds interesting. I wasnt very impressed with Morrowind. I played it but it seemed too empty for me (probably cause I was playing EQ at the time too). I'm trying out Sacred at the moment while I make a decision. If I see Arx cheap enough I may see if it will run
Thanks again for the helpful posts |
Until Gothic 2 came along, Land of Lore was my second favorite CRPG. And I played LOL 1 before they added the multi media stuff. A great great game that was brought down a tad by its less than great successors. LOL 2 and LOL3 were okay games but clearly not in the league of their progenitor.
BTW, Cerebro, I think my gothic 2 comments were pretty generic and there is no way I ruined anything for you. Both games have a bunch of population centers and unless you played both game you'd have no idea what I'm talking about. But I hope I didn't cause you too much stress and you hurry up and get and play the games. And Huwge, another game that could go in your waiting to make a decision queue is Divine Divinity. It's overhead like Sacred but with what I believe far better game play. and I liked Sacred a lot. Arx Fatalis should be cheap. Amazon has it anywhere from 12 bucks and Ebay has it anywhere from a buck all the way up to 30 bucks. But be careful because there is an X-box verions out there. But Arx is very good game and when the sequel comes out I will be there on day one. The only thing I didn't like about Arx is that it had no background music. However, the atmospheric sound effects in the dungeon area are some of the most creepy ever done with an RPG. read some of the review on Amazon.com and that will give you a pretty good feel for the game. |
Thanks for the reply Dajjer. I've played trough Divine Divinity. Was a bit of a let down at the end, the boss was way too easy to defeat, plenty of good quests till then though, kept me going for a while
