Turn Based-The battle system consists of taking turns during battle/you don't go up and hit the enemy, you select from battle options, and then the character attacks, casts spells etc. depending on what you choose from the menu
examples:Final Fantasies, super mario Rpg(not the best) My favorite is Final Fantasy 7 |
Final Fantasy 8

I really like turn-based systems, except where the advantage of positional tactics is wasted. Don't get me wrong, I liked FF7 a lot, but I thought part of its combat was a bit absurd, seeing them go back to their starting positions, lol.
I'll say Betrayal at Krondor was my favorite, but Pool of Radiance (the first one, which I played much later) is close. As an aside, I like turn based strategy with (light) RPG elements like Jagged Alliance, XCOM, Master of Magic, and Age of Wonders. |
Fallout/Fallout 2, these two games are really wonderful.
The previously metioned Betrayal at Krondor and the old SSI Gold Box Games also deserve a mention, along with some of the better Ultimas. |
Lucern and Seraph hit all of my favorite turn-based games--especially BaK and Master of Magic!
If we are talking about console style games where your characters do not move in battle, then I would say FF4 (FF2 in the US). I have replayed that FF more than any of the others. I like FF6 and FF7 a lot, but FF4 has a certain charm to it that really appeals to me (I have always liked the music in FF4 better than all of the others. It may be of worse "quality" than in the other games, but the tunes are more memorable IMO). Plus I always like the story, which is now considered simple and rather cliche, but it was good at the time. |
Breath of Fire 3 and 4. Used to be console only but cheers to capcom for bringing them into PC. :D
Others are Castle Fantasia, Farland Series and even Windcloud ( Fungwan ). Might and Magic 1 is good too. Strangely I prefer Betrayal at Antara than Betrayal at Krondor. ;) [ 04-01-2005, 01:32 AM: Message edited by: Kakero ] |
Arcanum, by far. Secon best would probably Heroes of Might and Magic 3, altho that ain't strictly an RPG, more like a strategy.
|
Hey as long as its turn based I don't care.
|
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, is my favorite. Not a great story but it has that "just one more battle" appeal to it.
|
My all time favourite RPG is Fallout. They don't make them like that anymore.
|
Arcanum and HoM&M 3.
|
Shining Force.
Hands down. Hands nailed down. |
I played Wasteland recently. The graphics aren't the best, but the game play and story is good.

Curse of the Azure Bonds was a major favourite when I was in high school, the second of the AD&D goldbox games. That engine still stands very tall today in fact, with its own newsgroup and sites to download fan made adventures using the "Unlimited Adventures" program. *sigh* Love all of those games very dearly and have played and completed all of them! Might just have to repeat Pools of Darkness one of these days and see if I can finally conquer "Dave's Challenge". :D
I have to mention Bard's Tale III also, which would probably be my all time favourite RPG period, with its turn based descriptive combat style and classical old school dungeon crawling and riddle solving. Upon discovering this game in 89 or so, I was posessed by the cRPG. :D I've got Arcanum to look forward to soon...and I really must get my paws on Temple of Elemental Evil and see if it at least surpasses the horrible abomination that was POR: Ruins of Myth Drannor! Talk about an insult to a classic. ;) |
