Does anyone else on the entire planet actually own this Eidos Interactive game?
I'm having a little trouble trying to take Port Royal without inflicting civilian casualties and adding to my infamy score. I did at one point get quite far into this battle without damaging civilians but some Frigates sailed up behind me and smashed up my fleet and I couldnt fight them off because I'd used up most of my gunpowder mashing up the town. Bah! This time I've powered up my main gunship with over 8 tonnes of gunpowder and I am going to fight my way through this battle slowly once again. When the gunships show up this time they are going to be in for a very nasty suprise!!! Bring on the double-shot cannon ownage!!! |
I found it in the bargainbins somewhat 2 years ago, so you're not the only one on the planet. :D
Unfortunately i don't have any hints and tips for you, because the game never got to me. I think i uninstalled after one or two days of not knowing what the hell i was doing. |
You are really missing out, once you get into the game you are good to go for AGES.
I successfully captured Port Royal on my 5th attempt with NO reputation loss whatsoever (the other games were reloaded because my scurvy crew kept butchering civilians). This was a hard battle, make no bones about it. I had to capture around 50 townsfolk before the governor relented and surrendered the town. I then replaced the governor with one of my officers and Port Royal is now a pirate port. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! As a sidenote, I've recently obtained a Spanish letter of Marque and I'm plundering the hell out of Le French. That'll teach them for setting up ports in the Carribean! Garr! |
Now that i think of it...this sounds an awful lot like Sid Meier's Pirates, and that's a game that i did enjoy. Of course Pirates had much better graphics.
|
This game is going sooooooooo well its ridiculous. I have converted my entire fleet to pinnace's and sloops, so they all move pretty quickly from port to port.
Furthermore, my pinnace flagship has 16 cannons on it, 60 gunners and 10 tons of gunpowder: it is devastating. I've actually managed to 'take' two towns that I was never actually able to capture before simply by kidnapping citizens until the governor surrenders the town. Previously, I always used my ship cannons to blow up the governors mansion, which usually had a very similar effect. My fame score is currently at 5000+, and my infamy score at a nonexistant 0. I have ships full of stolen booty and plenty of places to sell the goods. Life is good for this pirate :D |
I play Cutthoats too. It is a nice game. Especially the land combat scenes are much better than those found in Pirates! The naval combat scenes are also a tad better since one can use more than one ship in the battle. It also has the advantage over Pirates that one can fly Danish colours on top of the other 4 nations. ;)
However, I think that it lacks an overall general story as opposed to Pirates. Also the game is marred by several huge bugs. |
Yeah, several bugs are real whoppers.
Not quite so many now I'm using the 7.0 patch though. I currently have a fleet of 12 ships, solely pinnaces and brigs. They move around quickly and I have over 400 tons of storage space to keep any goods I 'aquire' in. Just saved my game outside of Barbados before I take the town for the good of Spain! I've taken this town 3-4 times already, but a bug has prevented me from installing my own governor. This time around, I'm going to sail into the harbour THEN try and take the town, rather than using battle view and sailing into the town. Looking forward to this, should be a big payday. |
I may have been quite ignorant, but where can I acquire the 7.0 patch? It sounds like I have to start playing Cutthroats again really soon.

http://ftp.eidos.co.uk/pub/uk/cutthr...patch_v7.0.zip One thing worth mentioning is that it is possible to capture approximately 85-90% of ports without gaining any infamy. I cannot believe that I am powergaming a pirate game. *sighs* |
Thank you. ;)
Does it not require a lot of reloads not gaining any infamy? In my experience there is always one or two of the crewmembers that get excited and shoot at some unarmed woman who is putting her hands in the air. |
Ahahaha. Indeed, your crew will almost always try and butcher civilians if you arm them with muskets.
However, I no longer give my pirates firearms, and a mob of 75 rampaging pirates is enough to persuade the civilians and soldiers alike to surrender. I'm very tempted to start 'filming' my town captures using FRAPS and creating a website for the game. It could be nice to watch the techniques/methods for capturing towns without any ill reputation effects. |
One thing that disappoints me is the fact that the town guard is still summoned if one just sends ashore one or two crewmembers. It would be nice if they could go ashore as civilians, loot a house or two, possibly kill a person from an assassination quest and then return to the ship.
|
I tend to use power word: reload to avoid the assassination/look for the bloke wearing a golden hulahoop quests unless the payout is very good.
There are flaws in the game, but its still very enjoyable. |
But I really like the idea. It is just too bad that one has to take an entire city down with him at the same time. Especially if it is an allied city. :D
|
lol, the flaw with this is you can take down the city and replace the current governor with your own.
By default, the governor you install is still the nationality of your Letter of Marque. Therefore, you can plunder allied towns, and as long as you replace the governor with your own man, suffer no ill consequences. Nice to storm a town, grab the gold and cargo, then speak to your mate who is the new governor and get an extra reward. |
That is certainly a flaw. :D
|
lol, Pirates! on the Commodore 64 was a classic. The best game I ever had with this was when the Spanish somehow declared war on the Spanish.
I made a killing let me tell you! |
:D That was certainly also a flaw.
I only had Pirates for my Amiga. One of my favourites then. The new pc version is also great, but somehow I just feel it lacks a certain feeling that the old Amiga version had. Perhaps it has become a little too cartoon-like. I really cannot tell what it is. I had expected more from it - but it is still a great game. |
I've ascended to a whole new level: my crew loyalty has risen to 100%!!!
I currently have circa 220 crew members. 75 marines, 60 gunners, 13 officers and 65 sailors. The reason they are so happy is that I have 1.3 million pesos (from which derives the term pieces of eight) to share with them. I am currently raking the Spanish along the main and replacing the Spanish governors with... my own officers! I'm getting everything in the port, then simply sailing back in and selling all of the goods to the prize court. I'm about to take on a couple of Dutch ports in the middle of the Spanish main and these ports are MINTED. I went through a test run last week and I picked up almost 200 jewels from them - alone these are worth a bloody fortune. |
The best trick of them all - which I am sure you already know - is to gather all the goods that have not been sold together with a minimum of crew on the flagship and sink the rest together with the bulk of the crew. In that way there are only very few to share the profit. I have killed many of my own men that way - and made a fortune. :D
And after that treatment there are still plenty of men willing to join one's crew for the next mission. Amazing how stupid they are - or how little rumour travels. :D |
lol, dead men tell no tales.
I always leave my last ship as a sloop with 3 men on board, plus one officer (plus myself as captain). With over a million pesos to split between the 5 of us, I'm guessing they are going to be fairly pleased |
