I just downloaded this oldy from the web and just started to play using VDSM sound utility. Great game a head of its time, early 3d. Story line is fantastic and makes the game worth while and the the magic and combat is, I just have no words for it. I still have not survived chapter one yet.

This is a must for any one who reads Raymond E. Feist's "RiftWar Saga and SerpentWar Saga."

Jaradu 02-06-2005 05:45 PM

Well, you seemed so entusiastic about it I just had to download it. :D

I'll let you know what I think of it or if I have any questions once I get started.

Luvian 02-07-2005 12:53 AM

I bought that game a few years ago and didn't like it.

I avoided reading his novels because of that.

The system of the game wasn't that bad, but the story progression? Horrible...

Griefmaker 02-07-2005 01:24 AM

I agree with you, SuperChief! Betrayal at Krondor is an awesome game--especially when I played it back in 1994 when it came out. Everything was ahead of its time back then. I still have fun with it today, even though there are no more surprises waiting for me.

Luvian, you bought this game a few years ago? You should have been able to download it for free from the Sierra site, unless you bought Return to Krondor, which came out around 1998 or so (Sierra was trying to spark interest in RtK by letting people download and play BaK). RtK definitely was not a very good game, which is too bad because BaK was great.

Anyway, have SuperChief, have fun with BaK. It is a great game. My one suggestion is to fully explore the world each chapter. There is always something new to see, or new NPCs in old locations, or new quests, etc. Have fun!

Kakero 02-07-2005 05:02 AM

Where can I download this game ( BaK ) ? I tried sierra but it says update.

Griefmaker 02-07-2005 09:45 AM

I don't know. Sierra.com used to be where you could download it from. Otherwise, Google usually knows!
Good Luck!

Legolas 02-07-2005 10:05 AM

You could try here.

Lucern 02-07-2005 03:40 PM

I'm amazed you guys even got it to work! I couldn't on two different machines - of course they weren't 10 year old machines with DOS.

And Luvian, I'll have to heartily disagree with you if you're talking about Betrayal, rather than Return. How often do you get a game whose story was written by an actual author? I think the book version was a bestseller, if that means anything lol.

I hated Return to Krondor. That was such a bizarrely assembled pile of crap that I wondered if anyone was even in charge of the story. I mean, vampires and stuff come out of nowhere. Didn't read about too many vampires in the Riftwar I don't think. The whole thing could be beaten in 5-6 hours with a little luck. BaK took about 60 with any luck hehe.

Jaradu 02-07-2005 04:32 PM

Lucern, you're not the only one that can't run it. I even tried downloading DosBox to emulate MS-DOS... but that's so user unfriendly IMO. I can't understand a word of it.

Ah well, I'll hopefully get it working soon and playing what sounds like a cool classic.

Legolas 02-07-2005 05:42 PM

Dosbox isn't that complicated really.

Start out by typing "mount c c:\" and then "c:". After that it's probably something along the lines of "cd krondor" followed by "krondor". There you go. Use CTRL+F12 a few times if things are moving too slowly.

CerebroDragon 02-08-2005 06:10 AM

Jaradu:
You're a good example of why I'm teaching my 13 year old brother to manipulate DOS on his Win98 Pentium to the best of my knowledge. *sigh*. The new generation and the desire to be spoon-fed. :D
Some old stuff is very demanding however, I can remember the headaches of getting Darksun, Ultima 7 to run. Hell, I'm still not ready to play Serpent's Isle yet! Will get to it one day...

A mate of mine has been recently singing the praises of DOSbox and so has been playing some classics he likes such as Master of Magic, Civilisation, Master of Orion.

Although sadly I've never played Betrayal OR Return to Krondor (know about them of course!) I do have a boxed original of Betrayal In Antara which is a Sierra game which uses an updated version of the same game engine. Again though, haven't played it yet! Too much to play in so little time, it seems. Again, one day....

Kakero 02-08-2005 11:04 AM

I seem to have a teeny weeny problem. After downloading the thing and installing the game. Where can i find the game to run it?

Luvian 02-08-2005 07:01 PM

Mine is Return to Krondor.

I hated it.

SuperChief 02-08-2005 09:02 PM

For you who have problems running this game in XP, get VDM sound found Here:

http://ntvdm.cjb.net/

Install the program and then lift Click on the main program and an option should show run with vdmsound. For some of those DOS programs this utility works great.

Where to get it, try Underdog.

SuperChief 02-08-2005 09:39 PM

The link I posted is bad so do a goggle seach vdmsound.

Kakero 02-09-2005 04:02 AM

I give up, after installing the game I couldn't find the game anywhere in my computer. Even using find function also only show me the original zipped file which I downloaded from the net. Shesh!

SuperChief 02-09-2005 04:56 PM

Kakero

I am am going to do a web search again to find the copy I am using and get back.

Lucern 02-09-2005 07:18 PM

*Nod to Luvian*

Return to Krondor deserves the spite of us all, lol.

Betrayal at Krondor is far superior in every measure other than graphics imo.

Btw, about DOSBOX, I have had no luck getting BaK to work using it, and I've gotten at least 50 other games including Master of Magic to work using it. For Dosbox, I recommend a program called D-FEND, which stands for Dosbox FrontEND. It's quite user friendly, and can help get the speed and sound of games right. Even better, you can run your games by double clicking them from DFEND's menu. Run a quick google on it if you're interested. ;)

What I haven't found is an emulator that's a bit faster, because I've found some games that want Dos, but are mid-90's and require more power than DosBox is emulating, even with its speed enhanced.

And as a little tip for Dosbox, keep your oldies in a folder directly into the C: (or whatever) drive. They're just easier to find in DOS that way.

SuperChief 02-09-2005 07:30 PM

People,
After a google search this is waht I found for anyone interested in the game.

version unknown
Has WinRar self extracting archive, might need winrar to use
http://www.bhlegend.com/php/show.php3?game=275

Has WinZip file of main Program and update to version 1.02
http://www.alt-tab.net/alt-tab/games/krondorplay.asp

Version 1.02 of the game

Another download sight

BaK resource page

For VDMsound ver 2
http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/

I found that VDNsound better to run certain dos games, works good for BAK

Note: when using the winzip file to install, do not use the install option in win zip, just extrate it to a new folder, which you will name krondor. For some reason the install option of zip does not work. once you have in unzipped to krondor folder you should find the main program Krondor.exe. If using vdmsound, right click on the file and choose run with vdms. You should get the start intro screen and credits, to by pass this to start, just left click and you go to start of game.
I hope this helps

Jaradu 02-09-2005 07:35 PM

Thankyou, Lucern - D-Fend makes it work! :D

SuperChief 02-10-2005 01:47 AM

Jaradu,

I down load D-Fend and sat up the profile for Kondor, run into a problem, mouse does not work in the DOSBOX. I have version .63 of dosbox. Any idea what the trouble is. The game loads, I click on the credits to go to start. screen changes. Mouse will not work in game afterwards. I cam moce the mouse all over the screen but I cannot click on the start or load saved game.

So what am I doing wrong?

Dace De'Briago 02-10-2005 06:12 PM

Try using the keyboard instead.

Many DOS games have no mouse support at all.

Lucern 02-11-2005 03:17 PM

BaK had mouse support, I'm quite sure. It may even be required for inventory and combat.

I'm amazed DFEND got it to work for you, because it didn't for me! Maybe I should fiddle with it a bit more.

SuperChief 02-11-2005 11:39 PM

I finally got my mouse to work in BAK, still having problems in other games such as in my flight sim series Aces.

What was to be done is you have to open the profile editor, go to general tab and open it. Then make sure the auto lock mouse is checked. The at the start mnue of the game lleft click the mouse.
