Can anyone help me with becoming a mage? I've read in a previous post that you need to perform some quests for it. I need spoilers on this. Also on a side note, my game tends to lock up on random screen transitions. That is when I move from one sector of the hive to another area the game occassionally locks up after performing the autosave. It hasn't proven debilitating as of yet. I just have to restart my computer every time this happens.

pritchke 10-01-2003 03:46 PM

<font face="Verdana" size="3" color="#00FF00">I can't remember the exact quests but the person you need to talk to is the witch in the area to the far upper left (Ragpicker's Square) in one of the huts. I think her name is Mebbeth. She sends you on fetch and run errands. The first time I talked to her I didn't use all the dialogue options so I missed becoming a mage for a few levels. You actually can become a mage at the very start. This should get you started but the quest themselves are fairly straight forward.

The first is one were she gives you a seed and sends you to a merchant in the market place who doesn't have the knowledge required and suggest going to a gardener. The gardener is Mourns-for-Trees in the SW hive but you may not know this if you never met him yet. It is the only quest that strays off the market place. There are 3 quest all together. I remember the 2nd quest being straightforward while the third requires a little running around the market area.

With the lock up thing try waiting 5 mins. This seemed to happen to me a couple times and usually if I had just waited a little longer it would eventually load. Annoying I know but to me it is better than a reboot. It may be it is just taking its sweet time loading.

Hmm in regards to the lock. I'm not sure. Last night I waited 15 minutes then microsoft error report popped up and closed the game.

Oh yeah, I can still switch to Mage even though I'm a level 4 fighter, right? Shouldn't effect too much my mage abilities right? P.S. 19 int. is fun.

pritchke 10-01-2003 04:31 PM

<font face="Verdana" size="3" color="#00FF00">Sometimes I guess there is no choice but to reboot. It shouldn't lock all the time like that though.

You can still switch to Mage anytime I was at level 6 when I switched. If you switch now you may be able to learn and use some of the spells of a higher level that I couldn't. I did not have a problem to finish the game even though became a mage at level 6.</font>

Cool! After going back to PST with the intention of really playing (and finishing) it I was wondering this about becoming a mage too.

Firestormalpha, maybe try reinstalling the game if you have not already. I assume you are running version 1.1 right?

HolyWarrior 10-01-2003 07:47 PM

Firestormalpha, if you haven't already, download the patch. That fixes a memory leak and other problems. You can become a mage right away, but I prefer to be a fighter to level 6 for better hp, then switch to mage. You have to switch before L7 or you lose the class tattoos.

Firestormalpha 10-01-2003 08:49 PM

HolyWarrior thanks for the class change advice. I switched at level 5 and don't really plan on looking back right now. Thanks for the info pritchke.

P.S. HolyWarrior, for the version I have I shouldn't need the patch. I got it in a two game package with another game, Soulbringer. Both games should be up to date without needing the last patch.

SpiritWarrior 10-01-2003 09:31 PM

Yes you have the same as myself, with Soulbringer (groan) which is version 1.1. Perhaps It's video related?

<font face="Verdana" size="3" color="#00FF00">Ha!Ha!Ha! I take it you don't like Soulbringer. It is actually not that bad of a game once you get into it and go up a few levels. The start is a little painful however especially when there are no instructions. Planescape is by far the better of the two however Soulbringer is worth a go and is a good game to play. I admit at the begining there was a few times I felt like tossing the game out the window but now I want to finish it.</font>

Well at first I liked it. The graphics were great for the time and all, the engine was okay. It just became a little monotonous plus it's ALWAYS night there...I never saw the sun.

Firestormalpha 10-02-2003 03:03 PM

Yup the constant black fog all around you gives the game a bit of a depressing edge to it. Of course it at least appears to have been made in a time period when computers couldn't show an extensive view of the surrounding areas.

Firestormalpha 10-02-2003 08:43 PM

Yay!!! I reinstalled and that fixed the area transition lock-ups, but I still get some random assertion failures here and there.

Umm scratch that. The dreaded area transition lock-ups have returned. The last time I let one sit still for too long it closed out the program and gave a runtime error. Interplay gave directions to fix it but only on windows 98/95
I have XP.

"This will happen most often when the area file has copied over incorrectly from the CD. You will want to do the following:
</font>
  • Right click on "My Computer"</font>
  • Select "Properties"</font>
  • Click on the "Performance" tab</font>
  • Click on "File System"</font>
  • Clcik on the "CD-ROM" tab</font>
  • Under "Optimize access pattern for" select "No Read Ahead"</font>
  • Click on "OK"</font>
  • Click on "CLOSE"</font>
  • The system will want to restart for these changes to take effect. Click "YES" to restart.</font>
  • Delete all area files contained within the C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Torment\CACHE\ folder.</font>
  • Rerun the game</font>

Can anyone tell me how to do that translated into XP directions?

<font color="cc0099">I have similar problems with Firestormalpha about the crashing thing. Try to look in its official site for troubleshooting http://www.interplay.com . I managed to fix my problem by deleting the cache file. And whenever I start the game, it'll create the cache file again automatically.</font>

Firestormalpha 10-03-2003 09:57 AM

Sorry Baron, I forgot to list that as something I've already tried. It didn't exactly help me all that much. So I'm still out of ideas. The game is still playable I just have to quicksave pretty often.

Firestormalpha 10-03-2003 09:01 PM

Well, I hit a spot in the Catacombs where I couldn't progress without falling out of character. So I loaded up a previous save, which unfortunately was before I actually got the a certain collector. I don't mind though. Took a different path I did. I told some preist I'd become a disciple of Aoskar, and the Lady sent me to a nice green maze. I figured it out in about 10 minutes + all the running around I had to do. Good news is that the area transition lock ups seem to have receded, hopefully this continues *knock on wood*.

SpiritWarrior 10-03-2003 10:55 PM

I have XP too, perhaps I'm destined to run into this prob eventually : /

Anyone besides me kill themselves in front of Awaiting-Death just so he can realize life is worth living?

Here's a new question. Anyone out there actually open the box given to them by Mar?

it's just a crappy 600 exp demon slug thingy... no fun at all...i thought it would be a giant winged great balor or something :(

lol

anyway, for the lock-ups, you have to copy all the cds onto your harddrive and when installing make those the place for installation...i think that's how you do it.

atleast it involves copying the entire cds onto your comp.

it solved my problem somehow, anyone?

Firestormalpha 10-09-2003 03:16 PM

DS the game doesn't exactly give me any options for the install aside from the path. I have the very last release 2 disc version. It installs off disc one and runs off disc 2. That's about it. Anyways I'm thinking I may run through Mars little goose chase then open the box at the very end of it. Before having the priest take care of it. And I was wondering about the demon because I had chosen to take it on, but wondered why it was so pathetically easy to kill that my starting character was able to take it out. Ok so I had the help of Morte and Dak'kon, but they were low level too. That slug was all Moridors demon was? Giant Skelly's are more dangerous than that.

andrewas 10-09-2003 03:46 PM

Trust me, you want to let the priest take care of that box. letting the fiend loose nets you an easy battle and a few XP. Letting the priest take care of it is far more entertaining in the long run.

Firestormalpha 10-09-2003 04:08 PM

Hmmm..., does it get me more than 600xp when he deals with the box? I was gonna run around doing the little give box to so'n'so missions racking the xp for those then get tired of chasing around the place and deal with the demon myself, but if having the priest take care of it yields more xp, I may go that direction.

andrewas 10-09-2003 04:56 PM

I dont know how much XP you get directly from the priest, but the items and XP you gain later on as a result are well worth it.

Firestormalpha 10-09-2003 05:30 PM

Andrewas I'm gonna need a spoiler on this. I've been through the boxes scenario once roleplaying, now I wanna tackle it powergaming while sticking as close to good alignment as possible. What xp and items are you refering to?

If you open the box, you get the weak demon (weak from being trapped in the box). If the priest disposes of it, much later in the game, you run into full powered demon, and he is MUCH harder (and worth more xp, etc.). Let's just put it this way, if you've fought your way through a lot of devils/baazetu, you will run into the demon when you return from that area. ;)

To do full install: Install game normally. Plug in each CD one at a time, choose My Computer-->CD Drive, then open another My Computer, then choose the directory with your CD1 file in it. Click and drag the folder from the CD drive to the other folder, copying that file over. Do this with all of the CDs, and you are all set. You'll still need CD2 in the drive to play the game (it checks, even with full install).

Firestormalpha 10-10-2003 12:15 AM

Nerull you weren't paying attention I only have 2 discs.

andrewas 10-10-2003 09:04 AM

Should work with the 2-disc set as well. Might need to tweak the .ini file, not difficult.

Firestormalpha 10-10-2003 06:54 PM

I might just give it a try then andrewas. Any clue what I'd have to do? Much as I'd love to figure it out on my own, I'd rather not change something and forget what it was that I did. Anyways I assume it would include copying the contents of disk 2 into my hard drive. then what?

Just decided to take a peek in my .ini file for torment. This is what I found on the top few lines.

[Alias]
HD0:=C:\Games\Planescape - Torment\
CD1:=E:\CD1\
CD2:=E:\CD2\
CD3:=E:\CD2\
CD4:=E:\CD2\

My guess I copy the CD2 folder into my hardrive somewhere. Possibly in the Planscape - Torment folder. and in place of E:\ I put down the appropriate path.

Am I correct? Someone tell me before I experiment with it.

Correct.

Firestormalpha 10-10-2003 08:07 PM

Woo hoo yay!!. :D I figured it out on my own. I'm happy now.

Well it worked, but I still pick up the assertion failures. I forget what causes that. I'm gonna check the official site and see. If no one's posted a response by then I'll just edit in my findings. Also is there a way to make the game CD independent without a downloaded crack? A way to make the computer think the disc is there? Or is it still crucial to running the game? and would such a thing be considered inappropriate here?
