Okay, it seems like we have a few real veteran gamers here who go back to the glory days of 8 bit computers. So let's talk about our faves (maybe even not-so-faves!) from way back when.
|
Some of my favorites from "back then":
1. Ultima IV - Roleplaying, conversation, and more than just hack and slash. Great non-standard intro and character creation (loved that Gypsy with her "tarot"-style cards). 2. Wasteland - The great post-nuke RPG (finally followed up lo! these many years later in Fallout). 3. Wizardry I & IV - Wiz I was the first true "party" style game; I loved having a whole crew instead of just one. IV was a mind-bender in many ways, with multiple endings, and the chance to play Werdna, calling up monsters for help with fights. 4. Bard's Tale III - The best of the series. BT I was a bit too much like Wizardry; some even called it "Wizardry with better graphics". 5. Might & Magic I - Loved it for the many puzzles. Hated it for the unbalanced combat. I still have the 50+ (you read it right, fifty plus!) maps from this game. Let's be glad all the dungeons back then were the same size and shape. There are others but these are the ones that come to mind right now.
Nightowl2
|
8 bit computer games? the only thing I can remember is Might and Magic 1. yeah the game is very unbalance, money is scarce, I have to memorize the maps to know where I'm going. ;)
does Might and Magic 2 ~ 5 count as 8 bit computer game? |
Yeah, they count as 8-bit, even if they've been re-released to play on the PC ;)
You must have a great memory if you can memorize all those maps ;)
Nightowl2
|
hmm,
my fav oldies.... Ultima 4 (origin systems) Elite (space sim, can't rem who by) Pirates (pirate sim by Microprose) ....can't rem anymore... |
Hmm... that was a looooong time ago...
1. Master of Magic (strategy) 2. Amberstar 3. Albion ....Must try to remember... *head blows up* |
Well, Albion is kinda cheating, because it wasn't an 8-bit game. But I guess we can allow it for you youngsters ;)

Nightowl2
P.S. Hey, anyone out there remember Temple of Apshai or Hellfire Warrior? |
Here you go..
* Phantasy Star I (SEGA) * Phantasy Star IV (SEGA) * Zak Mc Kraken (C-64) * Pirates |

Anyway, my fist PC was a 286 back in 1991 (or 92?) and I have not play much games those days. [ 08-09-2003, 11:53 AM: Message edited by: Paladin2000 ] |
Heh, you were still a meare childe when I bought my first computer, the Apple ][ +. The 286 was a 16-bit machine, so was already past the golden era.

Dragon Wars--might as well have called it Bard's Tale 4
Might & Magic 1 and 2--totally kicked Wizardry's ass Bard's Tale 3 Phantasie 1 |
They couldn't have called it Bard's Tale 4. Interplay owned the BT engine but EA owned the title. So you could have had a game just like BT, but called something else, or a game called BT that was nothing like the originals.
Of course, that doesn't mean it wasn't BT 4 in spirit ;)
Nightowl2
P.S. Nice to see someone remembers the Phantasie series, horrible though its graphics were. |
Since we didn't specify RPGs, here are a few of my favorites from all genres (in no particular order):
Bard's Tale 3-- Best in the series, even if the color-scheme was a little dull on the C-64 version. The Games Series (Summer Games through California Games)-- Great when I had friends over, since they allowed for up to eight players. I remember some good rivalries on those games. International Team Sports-- Another Ed Ringler winner (even if he DID use the same sprites for every game he ever made!) Alternate Reality: The Dungeon-- Brilliantly designed RPG, way ahead of its time. Wizardry 1-- The most enjoyable Wizardry game in the series, for its time. Ultimate Wizard-- Infuriating at times, but I remember killing hours with that level editor. Dragon Wars-- A great substitute for Bard's Tale 4. Actually exceeded the BT series in many respects. Maniac Mansion-- First game to make me laugh out loud. Great puzzles, too. Centauri Alliance-- (aka Bard's Tale in space.) Designed by Michael Cranford (BT1 and 2), it was almost identical to the BT series, but yet not quite as good for some reason. I'll think of more later, I'm sure. |
i can remember ultima thats about it because i have a terrible memory
|
Hmm - My first computer was a Sinclair Spectrum 48 (which I in fact still have - I wonder if that thing still works ).
The only RPG game I remember is The Hobbit: More or less a text based RPG. I had a lot of other simple games (some of them I made myself), but I do not remember any of them very clearly - oh well I think I remember a '3D' game called something like Ant Attack, where you had to rescue a girl in some town made of 'boxes' and inhibitated by some aggressive ants :D On my first PC I played a lot of EOB1, 2 and 3 Insane |
Hmmm...let's really rack the brain here... (no special order)

Ultima IV is still fun and it is free. Worst part about downloading it is you should search the internet on what reagents to use for each spell and what the spells are and do. I have the game books which are helpful. You had to actually buy and mix herbs to create spells so I guess mages were more like alchemist but very cool.

Elite was not hard! unless you really like to enter the 'void', can't remember the name of it, when you are mid way through hyperspace and get attacked by those octagon ships which spawn smaller ones. When u first go against a "Furdelance" (again I can't rem the exact names), they are extremely hard too! Just make sure you get mining lasers all around, forget all those military crap..... ahhh.... you can see where my youth got wasted..... |
Hallo,
my favorite older games: 1: Ultima III, IV 2: Elite 3: Bard's Tale I, III ( not II ) 4: Wasteland 5: Wizard's Crown 6: Pirates 7: Might and Magic III Greetings |
Do Amiga and old Mac games count? :D
Some of my favourites: Amiga Soccer Kid Chaos Engine Fire and Ice Lotus Turbo Challenge II Zak Mc Kraken Monkey Island 1 and 2 Streetfighter 2 Parasol Stars Old Mac The Day of the Tentacle Indiana Jones Escape Velocity [ 09-13-2003, 01:31 AM: Message edited by: GokuZool ] |
I was an NES child. I spent long, long hours playing Castlevania and Megaman, Metroid and Mario. I love them so.
To pick favorites, I'd have to go with Mega Man 2, Crystalis, and Dragon Warrior 4. DW4 was the first good RPG I'd ever played, and the only reason I even bothered to try out FF6, the game that really, really got me into RPGs. Crystalis was also a great NES title, sort of like a pre-Seiken Densetsu game. That's the Secret of Mana series, for those that don't know. And MM2... Man. Sidescrollers for life, boy, I'm telling you. I still play that game today, just for fun. And you can never go wrong with Tetris. |
Nintendo 8-bits ultimate release: River-City High!!!
|
You mean River City Ransom, correct? Yes, that was a fun game.
They are doing a remake for the GBA. :D |
Neat Loved that game. Me'n me brother used to rent that long time ago, hafta let'im know of the remake then (as he's the one with a GBA... he's 22 years old, doesn't make sense to why he's got a GBA and I don't )

The only known screenshot of RCR Advance. And if anyone else here can read Japanese, it's comical. "DODODODOKKUN~!!" |
Looks hot ;)

Haven't we forgotten something, little one? (if you tell me from what movie this is, you get an oral praise)
Pong, Tetris, Bruce Lee and Scorched Earth: the mother of all games. |
Quote:
If were going to include Pong, then we have to include stuff like Space Invaders, Berzerk, Wizard of Wor, Defender, Breakout, Pitfall, Missile Command, Frogger, etc. |
Dusting off the old memory box....
Apple ][ -------- Cartels & Cutthroats Temple of Apshai Wizards Crown Wizardry I Amiga ----- Dungeon! PC -- Pacific War |
I'm only 14, but I like playing old games for some reason. I've got three ancient CDs called "101 only the best games #"(I have 2-4) One has scorched earth on it, and that is one of my favorite games! I liked setting starting money to maximum and buying a whole lot of everything. My favorite thing to do was to set the maximum number of tanks and use highly destructive things so I could occassionally get the explosion where a giant blue laser would engulf the tank and create a large hole in the ground. This was especially funny if the talk files were turned on and a text box appeared over the tank saying "I see a bright light..." just before the laser hit.
