Okay I went to my mates place yesterday and he was downloading the LOR demo, after a quick Multiplayer game of Fifa 2003 (I won 2-1), we installed the demo...
What a load of sh*t, it has NO storyline, the acting is TERRIBLE, the models dont even look at you when they talk. Cut scenes are crap. Camera angles are horrible, often the camera goes behind a wall and you cant see what you're being attacked by, or from where..
they have completly turned it into a hack 'n slash, and have completly wreaked it. Plus Gandolf is a wizard, even tho he isn't meant to be! He wasn't in the first movie/book! He has lightning spells fireball spells you name it. He is more like Gandolf the white. They have taken a great storyline and turned it into a piece of sh*t. I, along with my best mate, were hugly dissapointed. Bah!Oh also, you can be slashed across the chest by a sword, fall over and get back up again with only minimal damage. Basically you go around killing orcs left right and centre. Even the combat was stuffed. They have made it impossible to win if you are attacked by 3 or more enemies at once. As soon as you get back up after being knocked down, another enemy knocks you down again, making it impossible to move! This is definatley a game that I'm NOT going to buy.

AMEN!
I too got this and hated every second of it, I really dont reccomend anyone buys this. It really is just way too simple, no action, CRAP!
If you want a good demo get the Arx Fatalis one, and then get the full game cause it rules! :D

Pretty ironic seeing that the movie and book were/are awesome.
I think it had too in-depth of a storyline to invert it into a game, the only thing they accomplished by doing this was branding it a sign of disgrace.

Yep...my sister bought it for me for a present.
Let me put it this way.

It sucks.

I will keep it long enough for my sister to think I have played through it, then trade it in at Electronics Boutique for store credit later.

The reviews at pcgr.com have not been kind either. There are times when it is advantageous to have a 8MB videocard--no disappointments with this one.

SomeGuy 11-29-2002 07:01 PM

I was also disapointed.AND TO THINK I SPENT AN HOUR WAITING ON IT!

SpiritWarrior 12-02-2002 02:25 PM

It all depends on the developers dunnit? So many good movies/sagas have been ruined by companies trying to cash in on the CRPG side if things.
I personally know if a game is good by the hype...I don't go seraching for reviews until i've heard enough people talk about it and for this game, I haven't. Plus the price plummetted really quick which is yet another sign.

I just hated the adverts they had for it:

Swing the sword.
Cast the spell.
Save the ring.

Or whatever it was.

The problem I had with this was the word 'the.'

It makes it sound there is only one spell.

They should have said 'Cast a spell' or something, but there is no way I'm getting this game, after reading what you guys have said.

I coulda guessed...looks all hack and slash from the commercials.

Shadowheart 12-15-2002 05:49 PM

Changes my thoughts on buying the game completely...

Jorath Calar 12-17-2002 05:47 AM

phew... and I was thinking about getting it... but after this thread and seeing the 54% mark in PC Gamer UK I think I won't... I'll get IW2 instead...

Looks like someone cashing in on the LOTR name, all the reviews i've seen have been pants.
Also, I would steer clear of Icewind Dale 2, buy any of the other Black Isle titles instead. It's the only one (except Planescape) that I couldn't be bothered to complete, the rest I've palyed through 3 + times, not IWD2, it's far too linear, like Diablo or NWN.

I too thought the game was crap and kicked myself repeatedly after downloading it. I can't say that i was dissapointed though, as i never expected it to be a game that i would enjoy, much less buy. But i just had to ease my curiousity. Curse my curiousity!!

Megabot 12-21-2002 12:26 PM

Good then i shall NOT buy that game :D It looked wery cool on the screen shots i have seeing!

Both Icewind Dale games are linear. That's the point of the game. When they made Baldur's Gate I and II, they made them as an outdoor exploration game with roleplaying elements. When they made Planescape, they made a game that was all about the roleplaying elements. When they Made Icewind Dale I and II, they wanted to make a dungeon exploration and hack and slash game. They even used that as a selling point.

You can't expect all games to be made the same way, that would be boring. This is not "Baldur's Gate III, a trip to the north". So it should not be like Baldur's Gate.

The lotr 2 towers game on ps2 is pretty good, but it isn't a rpg just a good old hack & slash action game. Some of the cut scenes from the movie are pretty good especially since we have had the game for 2 months but the movie only opens today.
