Looting.

I'm playing a Khajiit custom class (dubbed SNEAK-O-MATIC 3000) and I can't help but everytime I go into a new town or find some new place to loot, I steal everything that isn't bolted down to the floor and bring it back to my house in Ald-Ruhn. (Moravyn Manor) Loot loot loot. It's all I do now. I've barely even started on the main quest, I just find myself looting and bringing it all back to my home as trophies. On the balcony guard rail I've set up rows of bottles stacked on each other creating a huge wall of bottles. In one room I've got an entire corner stacked with books and scrolls I don't use. I don't know how many pillows I have and I take every weapon I find, no matter the quality or type. It all goes into my little pile of sharp stuff. I've aquired a decent stock-pile of potions and all sorts of armor. I've got an entire bowl full of rings and necklaces and in one corner I've made a small shrine (to nothing really, just adds to the roleplaying experiance) dotted with bits of ebony, raw glass, emeralds, diamonds, etc. I'm finding myself searching for Daedric ruins just in order to pilfer everything inside in hopes of finding new daedric items and what-not. I've become a complete klepto. Has anyone else suffered from this?

Kyrvias 11-24-2005 08:38 PM

*raises hand*

Hi, my name is Kyrvias, and I suffer from this affliction.

CerebroDragon 11-25-2005 12:13 AM

You're definitely not the only one there, Someguy. ;) I'd go so far as to say that its a universal phenomenon for at least some small part of our Morrowind experience.

However, I tend to think that because the consequences/punishments for stealing are so insignificant and fairly easily avoided, the game practically goads one into the occasional burst of kleptomania even if you try so fervently hard for roleplaying reasons, not to.

Eventually the thrill of no-consequence based pilfering wore a bit thin on me, but the nagging desire to loot and hoard (healing potions was a big one for me) never ever died. My monk never ceased to admire the sheen of Daedric armour and weaponry.

There's a basic chain of causality for this:
Raw Materials=barter=septims=training=level ups. ;) Gets kind of embedded into our thinking subliminally, I guess.

Pretty much.

Sir Degrader 11-25-2005 05:47 PM

I used to, until I got some morals. :D

Kyrvias 11-25-2005 07:08 PM

Define "Morals"

:D

Lucern 11-25-2005 08:07 PM

It would crack me up in Oblivion if when authorities arrested you, they then raided your house for illegal goods and tacked it onto your sentence.

Bloody thieves ;)

Someguy would die in a dungeon somewhere, even if he was playing an elf of some kind. :D

Sir Degrader 11-25-2005 09:47 PM

Or in the beggining, they look down to see if the plate is nearby :D . All those of you who know about the plate trick know what I'm talking about...

Kyrvias 11-25-2005 10:01 PM

please elaborate :D

Firestormalpha 11-25-2005 10:08 PM

Reminds me of something from Arx Fatalis Sir Degrader.

Anyways I've not play Morrowind in Quite some time, it is possible to just drop gold on the ground right? If so, it would be interesting to see how many piles and how large you can make them in one room of your house.

Sir Degrader 11-25-2005 10:21 PM

At the very start, there's a plate worth 500 (I can't remember the currency). Pick it up, and when the guard calls you on it, drop it. Because it's the start of the game you won't get arrested.

Calaethis Dragonsbane 11-25-2005 11:11 PM

*glances around and raises hand* I uh, selectively looted so much - namely candles, magical items, swords, interesting bits of armour, dwarven pottery, gems, etc, etc, etc - my computer slowed down. To the point where I could barely move...

SomeGuy 11-27-2005 02:50 PM

Okay well, I decided to transfer all of my stuff from one manor to another in Balmora and holy crap. I never realized how much stuff I had OR how much it weighed. I hope no one considered it cheating that I jacked my Strength way up so I could carry all my items in one load. (I plan on putting it back down when I'm done, of course.) After gathering up all the items in my house, I have a total of 9761 pounds of junk. Maybe I should consider selling some of it.

Sir Degrader 11-27-2005 03:01 PM

Why else would you have that stuff, if not to sell it?

SomeGuy 11-27-2005 03:41 PM

Well. It's more of a competition thing, really. Me and a friend both got Morrowind at the same time, and always constantly argued about who was the better gamer at it and the such since we're always competing at video games. I finally convinced him to come take a look at my pad and all the loot I've stashed away. He took one look at it all and said "I need to find my own house."

Sir Degrader 11-27-2005 03:53 PM

Isn't it easier to have a bench press contest (since your a weightlifter) rather then piss away your time storing stuff in a video game, which really serves no purpose? Ah well, having once ran 15 kilometers in a circle after refusing to ask for directions to try and impress a friend, I can fully understand.

SomeGuy 11-27-2005 04:10 PM

Well, see. I'm not really pissing away my time because I have a ton of time on my hands. And I said we compete in video games. I whip his ass in sports. He's a skinny guy, while I'm much larger. So it wouldn't be much of a contest.

Kyrvias 11-27-2005 11:16 PM

Also, what comes with the platter at the begginning.

This is extremely cheesy, but it works. After you get the dagger, attack the gaurd inside the office. He won't arrest you. just attack him until he dies.

Then when you meet up with the knight, steal a candle so he doesn't attack you. He'll say, "How could you steal that?" and be on his way.

With that armor, that's a good 300 more gold pieces :D

Calaethis Dragonsbane 11-28-2005 04:22 AM

But why? What's the point of stealing/killing at the first house in the game - you get so much stuff anyway - and gold. The first thing I'd do when I got out was to go and dive for pearls - but now I don't bother. Too much stuff.

Although, admittedly, stealing the platter and other silverware... well, I guess I'm a magpie. Oooh! It's shiny! *grab grab*. But murder's a bit much ;) .

It depends entirely on the character. I've played a few scoundrels but, IMO, the game doesn't cater for the type that kills non-hostiles to get what they want. As you mentioned Calaethis, there's just too much stuff that you can get without all the bother. Non-violent thieves on the other hand... ;)

Brayf 11-28-2005 08:19 AM

I once tried to count 48 minutes to answer a challenge from a friend. He was supposed to be clocking it, but after I'd done it it turned out the bastard was just winding me up.

Sorry, just thought I'd throw that in there.

Kyrvias 11-28-2005 11:13 AM

Kudos. must have taken awhile ;)

The game allows you to do this? Where? Is there an in-game way that you would find this out, or is it like "easter eggs" or gamers' tribal knowledge in other video games? Do you risk becoming shark bait (or dreugh bait)?

Brayf 11-28-2005 03:22 PM

When you're next in an expanse of water, look around on the bottom and before long you'll see oyster-ey things called Kollops. Just hit SPACE at one like you would a chest, and it'll open its inventory. Depending on your Luck stat, there's a chance to find a Pearl inside worth 100GP. A good place to do this is just outside Seyda Neen... Dive into the inland pond near the tax collector's corpse (if you found it) and there'll be a door in a cave underwater. This is a grotto, with plenty of kollops inside!

Pearl diving has always been one of my favourite little touches to Morrowind .

Madman 11-28-2005 07:35 PM

i am a theivin menace dude but i only go for the random crap like guitars/bongos and fancy lookin books really, ive had the game for about 2 years and am only halfway through just enjoy fillin the mansion with junk a little too much ;)

Kyrvias 11-28-2005 08:06 PM

pearl diving, eh?

I think I found another reason to start morronwind again.

theGrimm 11-29-2005 12:21 AM

When I started, I used to steal everything to sell for training. But I eventually realised that, if intend to powergame, there are far easier and faster ways to make money.

When I got around to making a thief character, I only stole things I considered valuable. Like raiding the three treasuries.

Sadly, I still powergamed, and wore 100% CE chameleon, and could quite merrily kill off an entire room without being seen, or take items that where lying right in front of their owners.

You'd think someone would get suspicious when their store inventory just starts disappearing.

Maybe, in Oblivion, there will be thieves who take your stuff! And you come back to your house and find your 5,000 pounds of booty ransacked.

P.S. Recall is THE spell to use when moving house.

Brayf 11-29-2005 09:13 AM

It's been stated that player characters WON'T be stole from, I'm afraid .

Kyrvias 11-29-2005 10:41 AM

Indeed.

Calaethis Dragonsbane 11-30-2005 10:30 PM

It's probably as well. I think many players would throw an absolute fit after their 5/15/days hour long stealing sprees were all taken from them just like that. I mean, it isn't fair, is it? ;) . You scour Morrowind/wherever for days picking up select loot, and then the AI takes it all from you

SomeGuy 11-30-2005 11:07 PM

Someone would fix it with a mod. Unless Oblivion doesn't allow for them. I haven't been keeping up on it.

Kyrvias 12-01-2005 12:23 AM

From what Emil has been saying at Blood And Shadows , a website dedicated to the stealth aspect of Oblivion, any info regarding the "Crime and Penalty" system is purely spoilerish.

Ah well. Hopefully you'll be able to hide small things like gems, or maybe even daggers from the gaurds.

Haha, it allows for them. There'd be absolute uproar if it didn't!

Well, naturally you could get it all back. Whoever took it is probably trying to sell it somewhere. Find the right merchant and you might find out who you are looking for. Track him down, kill him and take all his money. Then buy your collection back.

Kyrvias 12-01-2005 11:40 AM

or just ake it back! :D
