Sorry to be clogging the forum abit...

I miss the powerful spells of D&D.

I miss:

- massive area of effect spells like 30ft radius fireballs
- stoneskins that make mages good and last more than 30 seconds
- time stop... hehehe

Avy

Well, this game comes together with an editor. * cough *

that said, in this game you can easily modify any spell to suit your need, yes, you can have the ultra powerful fireball....if you want. just go buy a spell, and then find a merchant that can redo the spell.

Also, you don't really have much call for huge area of effect spells. It's fairly rare to be fighting more than 2 or 3 monsters at once, and one is more the norm. But yeah, get your own spells made! Buy cheap versions, like really weak fireball, then get a much better one made at a spellmaker.

yep avatar... this game is hardly even related to D and D, so why make the comparison. think of it as completely seperate and realize that its the largest free moving continuous gamespace available and you'll gain some appreciation... so mages arent the most powerful in the game? so what, maybe people in morrowind have less latent magical talent. be an assasin, its so much more fun anyway (like me sitting at my com going "don't see me, don't see me, don't seem me. CRITICAL DAMAGE, YES, didn't see that one coming did you?")

I miss being a mage... can't detatch from magic!

I miss all the mass fireballs and death rays ;p and be able to see those annoying lil assassins!

I have always played wizard/rogue all my D&D life :( are they really that weak in morrowind?

promethius9594 05-30-2004 05:28 AM

eh, they CAN be powerful LATER in the game. i prefer to start as an assasin or theif or fighter to get up in levels, then just train my magic skills later. once you have trained up the skills to really high, then you transition to being a mage. i mean, eventually you become good at all skills in the game, then your character just rocks... and you can make your own uber powerful spells, but you have to practice with the big ones to get better and better (ie-- more and more probability of successfully casting them)

Good point!!!

Thankyou!

I miss death ray, hate having to make contact spells. I designed myself to be marksman/wizard at range!
Not swordsman/contact mage that gets slaughtered all the time

Ya know, you can build target spells...

I hate the 'touch' ones, too.

But even so, playing a 'pure' mage is really tough. I still say you almost have to be a breton atronach to make it a practical strategy.

touch spells are great...since they're touch instead of ranged, they are much cheaper(in magicka), so you can create some very powerful area effect touch spells, with a very large diameter of effect...since you're immune to your own spell damage effect, you can kill many monsters at once using a touch spell...

promethius9594 05-31-2004 02:49 AM

oru, avatar, i've never talked to anyone who can go any significant distance outside of a town without having to use a weapon at some point to defend themselves, even breton mages. there will always be a point where you have to drop the fancy stuff and get your hands a bit dirty... so just pick and train one weapon skill (long swords are best for early in the game, staffs become good LATE when you can enchant them)

thats why i just cut my losses and go with a khaajit assassin theif who learns magick as time goes on... no need to flounder for the first half of the game while i suck at being a mage... i can just come in, get trained, and cast new spells now.

Kakero 05-31-2004 03:21 AM

I prefer range spells, a 100 fire damage 10 radius + 100 poison damage 10 radius Nuke spell can easily take out anything.

regardless, i think a mage should be pure, if you add a weapon skill I notice you'll end up using more that that weapon to defeat enemy than your spell.

promethius9594 05-31-2004 05:40 AM

yeah, kakero, im trying to play a pure mage too, right now. but for a beginning player who doesnt even understand the experience and leveling scale, maybe he's being to ambitious. there are better character types to learn with than a pure mage.

Avatar 05-31-2004 04:21 PM

hehe, I understand bit more now!!!

the game is terrible I spent 2 hour standing there casting my own mini-spells and levelled up fro level 4 to level 13.

then still got slaughtered by a fire anarouch or whatever even with a fighter friend. :(

I simply can't stand enemy fireballs

Questions from NEWBIE:

1) I found that running quickly sideways is a goodway to dodge enemy spells when u see them casting it... is this a generally good tactic?

2) Touch area spells don't damage myself???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about MY summons and companions? Do they spread spherically?

How weird!!!!!!!!!!!

Avatar 05-31-2004 04:27 PM

Hahahahhaha just read the above thread:

http://www.elderscrolls.com/ubbthrea...=&fpart=1&vc=1

Basically it saids:

How to splatter ur enemy.

It Levitates them really high up and then lets them free fall...hehehhee

1) I found that running quickly sideways is a goodway to dodge enemy spells when u see them casting it... is this a generally good tactic?

yes, this is the best way to beat a ranged opponent. i think i mentioned this when i told you to run at random diagonals towards the flame atronarchs.

2) Touch area spells don't damage myself???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nope, shouldnt.

What about MY summons and companions? Do they spread spherically?

also shouldnt, though im not sure, i dont summon, then drop bombs like that. i just summon and levitate at the same time... if i'm going to do a bomb like that then i summon beings to help me afterwards. i never keep companions longer than i have to because they get in the way of real fighting.

It depends on the spell, make a 100 fire damage to self on touch Fire Ball and see what happen.

They try to follow whereever you go, if you levitate above you'll see they'll running around in circles trying to get to you.
