IS there anyway of knowing how big a monster's soul is in terms of levels?

I've been experiencing a strange problem. I have petty soul gems and minor soul gems in my inventory. I successfully cast soul trap on creatures (white cloud around the body). I kill it inside a minute but only sometimes does the soul go in the bottle.

IS this because the souls I've killed are too big for the gem? I've had no problems capturing cave riders and rats, nix hounds and other minor monsters but I recently tried a couple of scamps and those souls just wouldn't go in the bottle!?

Is there a way of knowing which souls will fit where before I start hacking?

johnny 06-26-2003 09:04 AM

Don't exactly know, that's why i only carry greater soulgems and grand soulgems. Anything will fit in those.

Bruce The Aussie 06-26-2003 11:57 AM

i think it will automatically fit the soul into the smallest gem it will fit into that you have. meaning if you have a grand soul gem and a normal soul gem, a nix hound would go into the normal one. so just carry a managerie of soul gems. or use the editor to look at the different creatures soul size.

HammerHead 06-26-2003 12:48 PM

You should also be aware that some creatures are able to dispel the soultrap spell.
To avoid that it's a good idea to enchant a weapon with the spell meaning that every time you make succesfull hit, the spell will take effect.

HAve just been trawling a couple of FAQ sites and discovered that it's because I'm using gems that are two small for the monsters souls.

Fine, that's that sorted.

On the same thread - I've just run out of soul gems. I find them occasionally on bodies but I still haven't been able to find anyone who sells them. Could someone please give me a couple of names and addresses for places I can buy them (I've tried Balmora, Vivec and Sadrith Mora Mage GUilds - but no one seems to have them.

Thanks

Well,
If you're a member of the Mages Guild, their supply chests have a few that resupply every now and then. Also there's an Enchanter in Balmora Mages guild that sells empty and filled soulgems, a trader in Suran sells a few, and if you want to explore some of the Telvanni District in Vivec their canton has some dungeons/labs with soulgems.
Those are the places I know to get soulgems, but if you want something easier...

You might want to take a trip to the Shrine of Azura...

johnny 06-28-2003 09:58 AM

And raid a few smuggler caves, stealing from the dead costs nothing. :D

HammerHead 06-28-2003 01:31 PM

If you have Tribunal, you can by grand soulgems from the enchanter guy in Godsreach.

Rageheart 06-29-2003 12:50 PM

i suggest for the enchanter getting a heavy daedric warhammer and enchanting it with soul trap on strike, and head toward dagoth ur or the grazelands and get yourself some constant effect souls (Ascended sleeper, or golden saint)

Skunk 06-30-2003 04:22 AM

It is possible to *buy* a Summon Golden Saint spell - and you can trap the soul of your own summoning.

I don't think that it is neccessary to have a 'brilliant' weapon to enchant with 'Soul trap on strike'. Anything that gives you approximately 30s to kill and trap the soul is enough. There is (for example) nothing to stop you carrying two swords, one enchanted with soul trap on strike and the other with a damage health enchantment. Then all you have to do is hit your opponent once with the Soul trap sword and then switch weapons to finish him off.

Personally, I use a Glass Longsword to trap souls with...

Hint: if you cast soul trap from multiple sources on the same creature (e.g. spell, amulet, ring, scroll), you will get multiple souls. Useful for the always rare golden saints - just summon one of them and you will have 3 - 4 golden saint souls with one kill.

Second hint: don't steal the grand soul gem you see downstairs on the library in Caldera: if you do, the enchanter there will stop selling grand soul gems - and it's one of the chosen few enchanters who do that.

For non magic users, summon golden saint scrolls are sold by folms miriel in the caldera mages guild. He will however refuse his services unless you attain a certain rank in the mages guild. Joining and doing some menial tasks (go-and-retrieve or go-and-kill) is within grasp of any character class. Do that, and you'll get a (quite) cheap golden saint factory.

Windy Entwhistle 07-04-2003 04:06 AM

I'm still only a third of the way through the game..but I've developed a bit of a thing for claymores... noly I can't seem to find any decent ones to charm. Nordic Clamore has a level 10- which allows soul trap and a small amount of poison damage. I wouldn't mind something meatier.

Are there any claymores out there with larger enchant levels than 10?

Go out and find some Daedric shines. The Dremora/Dremora Lords/Golden Saints drops a variety of weapons including daedric claymores and even better, Dai-Katanas.
If you're not satisfied with the loot, either reload or rest as they spawn rather quick.

Actually daedric claymores deal a bit more thrust damage than the daikatanas. But they are 21 lbs heavier and less resistant. So, if you have turned the "use best attack" option on, use daikatanas. Otherwise, if you like claymores, you can use claymores with minor or no disadvantage.

I haven't stolen the Grand soul gem from the Caldera mages guild (though I did steal the one in Balmora,...)- but I can't find anyone who sells them in the Caldera guild, despite this. I've tried bartering with everyone (and I've reached conjurer status, so people who didn't used to barter with me, now do) but no one seems to have them. Do they get topped up and refreshed?

Is there anywhere else I can buy the grand gems? I found a list of dungeon locations on a FAQ where I can find them...but haven't found anybody who actually sells them..I've just been given a couple of summon golden saint scrolls ...I wanna charm, I wanna charm

I'm sorry, I posted something wrong. Steal that gem if you want. I double checked and nobody in Caldera sells gems, so it doesn't matter. I got confused and read -1 instead of 1.

Also I checked if someone sells those things, and actually, nobody does. Unless I'm mistaken, of course... :D
Actually it seems to me that Maren Uvaren was designed to sell those gems, but his desk containing the gems was never put into the game, and so was the ability of the guy to sell soul gems. Too bad.

HammerHead 07-04-2003 06:18 PM

Go out and raid those smuggler caves. I've found up to 6-7-8 grand soulgems in some of them.

What am I doing wrong with my charming? I just charmed a claymore so that it would cast soul trap and also deal poison damage. I set the button to "touch". However when I went out and started hitting the monsters with it, nothing happened. It appears that I have to activate it everytime by accessing it with my magic menu-ie press "R" on the keyboard, click left on mouse - and then switch back to "F" and hit them with it.

Which isn't what I had in mind. HOw do I enchant an item so that it automatically deals out the extra damage or spell when I hit something with it? (Like all the magic weapons in the game do?)

Oh, yeah, someone higher up in the therad said that it was possble to buy the Golden SAint spell in Caledra MAges guild... I've been able to buy the scroll there, but no one's offered me the actual spell... is this another mistake? Or am I asking the wrong people? Can you buy the actual spell in the game, or is it only the scroll?

"Touch" means you must activate the item like a scroll and touch the target with your hands while casting the spell.
The effect you want is "Cast on strike": the spell is released when your blade touches the target.

Nobody said that you could buy summon golden saint spells in caldera.
