how about killing the guard first? ;)

Killing a guard is a definate no-no unless you want a sizable bounty on your head.

Approach the guard from the opposite side of the sword (or whatever other target, apply this scenario in anything you're trying to steal). Get close enough so he speaks, thus turning. Once he's turned (w/ his back to the prize), then back off, leaving him facing that way. Now, sneak around to the steps, jump the rail towards the beds, and sorta jump up onto the top bunk...sometimes helps to be off the same line-of-sight axis by as much as you can manage. Now F5 as a safety net. Try your sneaking or invis...I used sneak. Got this sword and a whole set of glass armor (and lots other stuffs) using this method in different places over the weekend. Also, use pillars and posts and whatever else you can to block the views of guards. Honestly, I feel like I've stolen "too much" already... http://216.40.201.38/contrib/blackeye/hihi.gif

let me rephrase that. How about taunting that guard to attack you first and then kill him? ;)

Guards aren't exactly pushovers.

Try something simple and easy:

1. There is a beam next to the bed

2. Stand beside the beam to cover yourself from the guard.

3. Jump and press the space bar a few times. This might take a few attempst but it is the easiest way to get the sword without the guard noticing.

Try taking off your armor before stealing the item. I got caught on a few thefts even though the steal icon was showing, now I remove armor .... no prob

it doesn't make a difference, you should look at the guard before stealing, make sure the guard completely turn his back at you. then press ctrl and steal whatever you want to steal.

I was stealing the ebony staff from the Telvani in a TG quest. His back was turned (I was looking at him and the staff) and the icon was lit ... still caught (and killed). Took off the Dreugh armor and walked out with the staff.
