Ok I am hoping to experament with a RPG based roughly on the Call of Cathulu PnP system, but since I do not have the player's guides or the GM's booklets I will be running it on a sort of half-assed setup :D .
For those who do not not Call of Cthulu is a Dungeons and Dragons like game set in either modern time or oftern in the 1920s, this RPG will be run in modern time. The CoC world is based largely on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and focuses on the paranormal (reminds me of an earlier version of the X-Files :D ). Unlike DnD it focuses more on puzzle solving and investigation then fighting lots of beasties (although there will be combat.) A unique addition is the Sanity Points system which can have the effect of your character being driven insane (which will be treated like death.) Ok so each character will need some basic stats such as: Strength - This measures your character's ability to carry great weights and move heavy things. Constitution - How far you can run, your resistance to disease, how long you can climb etc. Size - Small/Average/Large, the bigger you are the more likely you are to be able to knock down doors etc. The smaller you are the more likely you can fit into small spaces. Intellegence: How smart your character is. Dexterity: How flexable you are, how well you can catch etc. Appearance: Much like Charisma but it only judges your appearance as your manners etc will be shown through your playing of the character. Education: Level of Education Sanity: 50-100, how many sanity points your character has And last of all: a description of your character. The game will be largely roleplay, so it will be more focused on interaction between characters and NPCs then on combat. Now classes are as such: Soldier: Focus on weapon knowledge and skills, by far the best for combat situations Doctor: Capable of performing surgery and minor ifrst aid upon people, can also conduct autopsies and identify injuries. Tech: Electronics master, highly skilled with computers and other electonics. Scientist: Highly knowledgeable in many areas, very good at research. Occultist: Someone largely interested in the paranormal and occult, will be capable to recognising some creatures and symbols. Now since it is set in modern time you can feel free to suggest other classes but those are the ones that came off the top of my head. [ 10-16-2004, 10:03 PM: Message edited by: shadowhound ] |
Great, really interested for this! But how di I set up my stats? Like 3d6 or what? What exctly are we talking, D&D like, or percentile, or what? Anyway, I'm gonna be a Tech, Average sized male... I just don't know what numbers to put into the stats.
|
Example:
Dr Randall Newman Str: 11 Con: 10 Size: Average Int: 18 Pow: 11 Dex: 13 App: 10 Edu: Yale Graduate Sanity: 55 |
Ok after some research: Str, Con, Dex and App are all 3d6. Education is based upon you character (for instance a doctor would have a higher edu then a occultist generally). But since I am not going too deep into it you can choose your stats as long as they do not become overpowered, after all I will only be using stats occasionaly.
Also: I am removing the Power attribute. Due to a minor mistake in my working. EDIT: If anyone is interested in other possable classes, let me know because I now have a 84 page document of classes [ 10-16-2004, 10:05 PM: Message edited by: shadowhound ] |
Edward Schneider
Scientist Strength: 10 Constitution:11 Size: Small Intelligence: 18 Dexterity: 14 Appearance: 10 Education: Oxford University Sanity: 50 As an introvert, Schneider mostly keeps his experiments and research to himself. Althought exceedingly clever, his mind is weak and he often breaks down. After completing Oxford University, he worked as a rocket technician for the government, before moving to ... (Where is this taking place? ) ... to visit his brother. <center>--------------------</center> I have to say, this looks very interesting, shadowhound! |
Celestial
Tech Specialist - Computers Age: 21 Strength: 9 Constitution: 9 Size: Average Intelligence: 19 Dexterity: 12 Appearance: 12 Education: MIT, various computer technology research centres, self-taught computer network use and abouse(aka hacking) Sanity: 68 Celestial is this young man's hacking alias, and he refuses to be called anything but by that monicker. He is an anarchist who believes that the freedom of speech and information is paramount and a cornerstone to true freedom. Works as a security consultant in a respected firm. I've got a cool idea! Shadowhound, if you would allow, I'd like to make my character a somewhat split personality with this dude: Infernal Technology Specialist Strength: 11 Constitution: 10 Size: Average Intelligence: 16 Dexterity: 14 Appearance: 12 Education: same as above, but often ignored by his personality, more understanding of malicious computer lore Sanity: 55 When things are messed up and Celestial loses it, Infernal takes over. A slightly evil side of the hacker, Infernal may take over several times a day for a period of about a total of one and a half hour and always comes unbidden. His character is somewhat unstable, and prone to outrages. Unlike Celestial, Infernal is always aware when Celestial is in control and retains his memories when taking over. Celestial never recalls anything Infernal did. So, would you allow something like this? |
What about this?
Dr. Einbert Alstein Scientist Age: 46 Strength: 8 Constitution: 6 (smokes a lot) Size: Average Intelligence: 19 Dexterity: 12 Appearance: 18 Sanity: 94 A very charismatic and intelligent person Dr. Einbert Alstein is a renowned researcher in physics and maths and has received several important prizes in these domains. His latest research has been on anti matter guns and the military applications of lasers and he usually carries prototypes of these weapons around with himself for various conferences. [ 10-17-2004, 01:03 PM: Message edited by: dplax ] |
Well so far everyone looks good exceot for a few small things:
Jaradu: The adventure will begin in Mexico, the adventurers will have been brought there to take part in an important discovery. Bozos: Cant really work the split personnality thing. Dplax: It all looks good except for the comment about the anti-matter guns. At the start of the adventure you will be given certain equipment and will not be allowed to brin anything else. |
It said that he carries those with him to conferences. When he doesn't go to a conference he shall not have it. So when he goes to Mexico he shall go with only a laptop and research papers. If that is acceptable of course.

OK, then I'll go with only Celestial.
*eagerly waiting for this to start* |
Ok well everything seems good so far then, I would like to give it a bit longer to see if anyone else joins but if they dont then I will still be able to run it with 3 people so thats all good.
|
Ok well let the game begin, and remember to disable sig when posting.
------------------------- Location: Near La Realidad, Mexico. The three of you have been hired to participate in the exploration of a temple found in the wilderness of Mexico. You all arrive on the last truck to the site and oce there you are met by man of average build and appearance, "Hi, I am Dr Randall Newman and I am leading the expedition. Allow me to introduce you to the rest of the crew." He introduces you to a woman in her early forties, her dark hair is streaked with grey and she always seems to have a grin on her face. "This is our archeological expert Dr. Perez. We are lucky to hav..." He is quickly interrupted by Dr. Perez, "Don't listen to him, I am lucky to have the chance to see the temple, and please call me Carolyn." "This is Dr. Gonzales, he is an expert anthropologist." He appears to be in his early 30s and is lunging around in a t-shirt and jeans, he gives you a friendly wave. "These are two graduate students that decided to come with us, William Cordo and Maria Lucendia." William is a large man with close cropped dark hair, he is also missing an arm. Maria is an attractive blonde who gives you a quick wave before returning to sorting out her tent. "We also have a photographer and writer from National Geographic but they are in the tent organising the gear for the expedition. We have seven labourers who will be staying at a camp to the south." He then introduces you to each other and the crew, "Mr Schneider and Dr. Alstein are here to give their opinion on anything we find and Celestial is going to be running our communications and technology. Ok are their any questions?" ---------------------- OOC: Ok here is your oppertunity to find out anything you want to know about the camp, equipment, weapons etc. You can also feel free to chat to the other people at camp before the expedition begins. OOC2: dplax, very witty name. I just realised where it came from :D |
OOC: Took you long enough to realise the name. :D
IC: <font color=yellow>Dr. Einbert Alstein The short, balding scientist examined his companions. He had read earlier in a scientific review about Edward Schneider's work but was not too much interested by it. Einbert was more like a theoretical physician than a practical one. Celestial looked a young wizzkid in his early twenties. Einbert walked over to Schneider. "I've read earlier about your work in rocket technologies. I am intrigued as to why they invited a rocket scientist to the exploration of a temple. Would you mind explaining this to me?"</font> |
Is it too late to join?
MSG Edward Kistler (retired) Military Specialist Age 38 Str 16 Con 18 Size Large Int 12 Dex 14 App 8 Sanity 80 Education: Ola's High School (drop out) in Idaho, a tiny town that's barely on the map) A former US Army soldier, MSG Kistler is almost unique in that he snuck through his army career almost completely illiterate. He can write his name, and recognize symbols, but can't read lengthy documents, or words more than a few syllables. He retired after 20 years and has been kicking around looking for something to do. He is very familiar with heavy weapons, and very fit, however his face is mangled by some shrapnel he took during a training accident. He is gruff, and used to being the top dawg on the pile, and doesn't take easily to people ordering him around, unless they're clearly a superior rank. <font color=lawngreen>Celestial
"That is not the top of it." Celestial stood next to Einbert, and pointed a ways off away from the tents, at a couple of men standing together "That right there is a marine. Armed. There is definetly something we are not told, as I have never seen an armed expedition in the Middle-of-nowhere, Mexico." He took out a wide pen from his pocket, and removed the tip, revealing an USB connector. He looked at a nearby laptop and said "What do you say we find out a bit more information about this?" </font> OOC: The thing I got out is a USB drive with 2 GB storage, and it's half-full with various software tools. The only thing I have of my inventory, is it OK? |
<font color=white>
Schneider Schneider extends his hand to shake Einbert's. "Ah, I see that I am not the only scientist working with weapons. People say you have had some experience with guns and lasers, hm? To be quite honest, I do not know why I in particular have been chosen for this. Do you think it may have something to do with our experience with weapons?" The scientist whips out a couple of devices from his large pockets. As they emit what seem to be random beeping noises, he stares at them intently. "Well, I just see this as a great opportunity to find out about this area. These little charms can gather information about our immediate environment." Shneider is disturbed by Celestial's comment and slowly leans out to see the Marine. He nods to Celestial and eagerly examines the USB drive. </font> |
<font color=yellow>Dr. Alstein
"Guns and lasers, yes you might call them that. They are much more complicated than simple guns and lasers though." Einbert then took out his laptop from his bag and after switching it on started jotting down notes about the people he met and the general area. He only payed moderate attention to Celestial and Schneider who was now watching him. He did not even notice the marine.</font> |
Dr. Newman steps forward again, "Ah I see you decided to come after all Mr Kistler."
He introduces Edward to the investigators as well as the crew, "Mr Kistler is here to supply security, there have been instances of robberies on expeditions such as this one and we do not want to lose anything of value." "But allow me to explain why you are all here, it is obvious that Celestrial is here because of his technical skills, Dr. Alsein has been invited because in 1973 a temple similiar to this one was discovered. Inside was found an unidentifyable object which was suspected to be a weapon, unfortunatly it was lost in a robbery before it could be return to civilization. With Dr. Alstein's experiencee with weapons we are hoping that if any such weapons are discovered again we can recognise them. Dr Schneider is here just in case we find any other forms of lost technology." Celestial: As you pull your laptop from your pack you are annoyed to find that it has been cracked during the trip here. Perhaps you should check with the crew for other technology? dplax: Unfortunatly it seems that you cannot gain access to any networks, while you can still use your laptop for note-taking it will be useless for research. Morgeruat: As per the request of the crew you only have your pistol, they did not want you to bring anything heavier because it may risk damage to the temple. Jaradu: The devices beep and you get a quick readout - The surrounding area has medium vegetation. For some reason you cannot get a clear read-out concerning the area around the temple. |
OOC: This will be run in proper DnD style, do not take control of any of the NPCs and do not claim that the camp has anything before checking with the crew. And have fun :D

<font color=olive> Ed Kistler
"Well, Lets get this show on the road, While I am being paid well, I don't like sittin on my arse." Ed is a large muscular man, who seems to take in everything around him, and has a Piercing stare, that seems to look through you, instead of at you making you feel automatically nervous, as though he knows something you've done that you shouldn't have. He's wearing urban camo pants (white and grey camouflage patterns) with a white t-shirt, holster and 9mm, with 2 extra magazines, and an old Denver Bronco's cap (before they changed the logo about 6-7 years ago) His head is shaved, and looks like Mickey Knox at the end of natural born killers, down to the glasses (link here) </font> |
<font color=yellow>Dr. Alstein
Einbert finished writing his notes and switched his laptop off, then put it back in its bag. He looked at Ed, the obviously military type. "So you are the one charged with our protection. Do you think your services shall be needed?"</font> OOC: I shall be away until wednesday or thursday. |
<font color=white>
Schneider "Well, I'm hoping that the most voilence we'll encounter is a couple of wild animals. We'll see." He feels uncomfortable just looking at Kistler... the man had a strange mystery about him. Resolved, he decided that Ed would provide enough protection that danger should not be dwelled on too much. "Blasted machine..." says Schneider, thumping the side of his device. "Looks like we'll have to get the first look ourselves." </font> |
<font color=olive>Ed
Nodding at the pair of researchers he appraised them, probably no good in a fight, and in all likelihood, too smart for their own good. "Yes, I am in charge of security here, in all likelihood my talents won't be needed, think of my presence as more of an anti-theft device, rather than a bodyguard."</font> |
<font color=lawngreen>Celestial
That only half explains it, but Celestial decided to let the matter frop. He reached into his pocket and produced a multidriver from there. He changed the screw-driver head, opened up his laptop and pulled out the hard drive, the only thing in the laptop that is of any worth to Celestial. He turned to dr. Newman and asked "You said I was the communications admin. Where can I find my equipment, and whatever you'll have me working on?</font> |
ooc:is it too late 2 join
|
OOC: Woo sorry guys, got a bit distracted by real life (The last few days are one big blur of drinks and parties :D ). Will make a post and try to catch up. There is more interest then I could have hoped.
For the sake of /)eathKilla and Keal we can assume that another truck of people has arrived. You just need to post a character Keal. |
Celestial: Dr Newman nods in approval of the question, "Well we have two main forms of communication, the first is the high-range radio. It has a 100 mile range so dont be expecting to get in contact with anyone other then the people in the small towns out there. To keep in touch with the rest of the world we are equipped with a satellite uplink, it allows up access to satellite communication as well as the internet, we have a television, phone, and computer hooked up to it but we would prefer to only use it sparingly because we have to pay the cost of using it."
Dr. Gonzales runs over "Dr Newman, we have another truck coming in soon. After that we should go an have a look at the temple." He turns to the investigators, "I must ask you not to damage the temple in any way, also do not go any further then we indicate. This is a very important expedition and if any damage were to come to it we would have the Mexican government all the way up our ass." OOC: Ok there will be times that your character notices something that most of the other characters doesn't, this info will be pm'd to you so that you can share/keep the info to yourself depending on your character. |
ooc: Shadowhound, feel free to post how much of my move the others will be aware of, once that's done I'll post again.
|
Ed Kistler takes Dr. Newman away to the side and you think that you may have seen the doctor hand him something. They talk for a few minutes.
|
<font color=white> Schneider
Schneider sees Kistler conversing with the doctor, but things nothing of it. He turns away, examines the landscape, and takes a large gulp of water. Turning back around, he asks, "So are we just waiting for the 'go ahead' now?" </font> |
<font color=yellow>Dr. Alstein
Einbert saw Kistler go off with Dr. Newman but did not pay any attention to them as he put away his scientific equipment in preparation for going into the temple. "Who are going to be the new people?" - he asked upon hearing about the other truck</font> |
ooc: I'd like to join also when you can work it in.

No effect, doctor. Charge to 450! Clear! *krzzzt* I've got pulse! 10 Blade! *watch the successfullness of the thread resurrection in the next episode* |
Sadly I think that the CoC system wont really work on the net. So I am sad to say that I think that the game is dead. (even after Bozo's attempted resurrection )
|
Since you do not seem to want to continue this game, would you mind if someone else takes over?
|
If someone else wishes to continue the game I would have no objections.
|
I would play. So that makes one of us. Dplax would DM it, and shadowhound, you're not about to leave the game completely, right? Stay as a player if you would. It'd be fun ... probably... hopefully :D
|
OOC: Well, let's restart this game then.
IC: The sound of the second truck could be heard in the distance and soon it arrived. Two men stepped off the back of the truck and introduced themselves as Scott Halcyon and Clive Braumen. Dr Newman then started talking. <font color=green>"You two did manage to come in the end after all. Gentlemen Mr. Braumen is a highly acclaimed occult specialist whose knowledge shall be most useful to us should we encounter any drawings or ancient documents. And Mr. Halcyon is a computer expert, but we called him in mostly for his psychologics expertise. Should we find any documents his expertise might help us find out more about the people who built this temple." "If everyone could just come here for a moment!"</font> - he shouted to the dispersed people. Everyone walked over and the party saw the native workers for the first time. There were seven of them and they looked to be Mexican natives. Coming over it could be heard that they spoke spanish. <font color=green>"OK, now that everyone has arrived we can start. Here is a map of the area "</font> - he said handing one aerial photograph to everyone. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ax/areamap.jpg <font color=green>"I'm sure all of you have seen our encampment. What might interest you more are the ruins and the temple itself, which are about twenty-twenty five minutes walk away from here. For now sleeping needs to be arranged, but I'll leave that up to you. Me and my collegues are in the cabin over there and the two graduate students are in that one."</font> - he said pointing out two of the cabins. <font color=green>"Every cabin has two rooms, one of which can take two people the other one. The toilets are in that small building over there and the largest building is where we have the kitchen, dining room and communications equipment. Now if no one has any questions I wish all of you a good night, tomorrow I would prefer if we could start early."</font> OOC: Newman +his two collegues are in building 6. The two graduate students are in building 2. Building 1 is the kitchen, dining, communications building. Buildings 3-5 are cabins and building seven is where the mexican workers are. Choose your cabin-partners. |
