I was just wondering what you'd guys thought was not that good about Baldur's Gate 2. I thought the story line was brilliant, for one thing, but I disliked the fact that if the main character dies, your game is over as well. I mean; why can everyone else be resurrected and you not?
|
Because, when a bhaalspawn dies, his body disinteragtes and his spirit is returned to the Abyss.
I disliked that there were so few areas outside Athkatla (compared to BG1), and of those that existed, it took exactly 20 hours to travel to. The open coutryside in BG1 was lacking. There was no music in bars either. Half-Orcs looked just like humans. The paperdolls were ugly. No Diemnsion Door. Poor Mage-stronghold (why must a practioner of the most intelligent and noble profession in the World live in the slums?). You saw so little of Irenicus (the coolest guy in the game). That BioWare made him (irenicus) so tall and muscular. Doesn't look as an elf. |
Irenicus wasn't supposed to look like an elf.The Seldarine had stripped him of anything that was elven including appearence!
As for the Topic I didn't like 1.The Equalizer. For the trouble you get into in order to find it,it is hardly worth it. 2.The fact that there was NO pure thief in the game, with the exeption of yoshimo("good thief but I never really liked him.Now I know why") 3.Evil theives cannot work with Bodhi!!!!!! 4.Only possible romance for female was Anomen. They could have worked more onthis!I mean we get a choice of 3 females and the girls only Anomen... 5.The fact that in Hell taking even 1 evil path results in alignment change. Well aside for these slight faults the game is brilliant! :D |
maybe a spoiler
Hmmmmm , things I didnt like about BG2??Well , there's Aerie. There is also the fact that there were 3 useless FREAKING thief/mages in the game!!The least that Bioware could have done was have one of them start out as a mage FIRST so that we would have another option for a thief besides Useless irritateing JAN and Mr."dance on the head of a pin"Yoshomo!!! I also wish that there was a way for evil parties to team up with Irenicus. As in , when you get to the asylum and hear his plan you could agree to help him destroy sulldenesalar and maybe have him double cross you so you could still kill him in hell. Otherwise the game totaly ROCKED !! |

Anyway the thing i disliked most about Bg2 is that it had to end. It was such a brilliant game. Oh well theres always the opportunity to replay it. |

I thought it was something dumb like the bhaal-essence affecting each of the spawn in different ways - the PC gets the extra abilities, but as a down-side crumbles to dust on death. Imoen gets nothing either way (apart from cuteness +1 - if you're into that sort of thing )
|
You do also get the penatly that you can only travel a few meters with dimension door, while every level 7 mage can do it how far he wants to.
|
I just really dislike Irenicus' dungeon. The first area of the game, but when you exit to the surface all the fun begins.
I love Imoen, and Aerie, and slightly yoshimo was amusing. Soloing though, is fun. I didn't realize Imoen dies, perhaps this is bg1 it happens? oh well oh well ;Þ |
1) You can't skip the cutscenes even if you've seen them eighty-freekin'-thousand times.
2) "You must gather your party before venturing forth." 3) Lack of Neutral fighters, lack of pure-class thieves, lack of non-cleric romances. 4) No way to change alignment from Evil to Good. 5) Lame HQ for Paladins. Lame "rescue your betrothed" bullcrap at beginning of Paladin quest. Why bother? You get to rescue SPOILER when SPOILER does that SPOILER-transformation in chapter 6. 6) No special HQ for Monks. Why would a Monk want to rule a castle? No, Monks need a temple of some sort. It'd be such fun to have a kung-fu parody for you HQ. 7) Lack of race/sex/alignment specific magic items. So far only the Dwarven Thrower so far as I can see. 8) Lack of items which give bonus 1st level mage spells. I wish the Metaspell Influence Amulet gave 2 1st level spells instead of 1 2nd level spell. 9) I want more Bard songs, and the ability to switch between them somehow. At the very least, allow Jesters to switch between their song and the Improved Bard Song. -- Nifft |
He probally just ment in normal combat, as everybody ese does from time to time. She never dies in a Story-line way
|
I disliked not being able to openly use magic in the city. I understand that it makes the game more challenging, but I still don't like it. And then for the little magic-meter maids to show up in the middle of a battle to tell you to knock it off is kind of stupid. It's like calling "game off" and "game on" while playing in the middle of the street.
|
just pay the guy 5000 gold in the goverment district then you can use magic int the city
|
Or fight them a couple of times, then they stop
|
1) No pure thief.
2) Irenicus was too easy. 3) You can steal everything from a merchant without facing. consequences. A NPC like Keldorn should make noise if this happened. 4) It was too easy to figure out that Imoen was you sister. 5) Too easy to figure out that Yoshimo had a secret and something bad would happen. 6) Irritateing Jan Jansen |
i hate the damn dream sequences. they suck, they take forever, and i have seen them so many damn times that it makes me want to vomit. i actually leave the room to go poop or get a beer, or pop, or something to eat, or check the mail, etc. when one of them comes on. it pisses me off to no end. i also think that every class, and some kits need to have kit specific strongholds. as the man said, why would a monk need a castle? the same for barbarians. a barbarian is nomadic, he wont live in a castle, let alone own one. he should get a plot of land (a LARGE plot) so he can hunt on it, and live there in peace if he so wishes.

I hate restarting games, because you have too pass throughthat no easy ambiance and long dungeon. It discouraged me a lot of times. But as mentionned above...the rest of the game is very intertaning (exept some useless quests that give nothing good for reward like "recovering the Lathander ring.....1000 gp for running through the city...that sucks) |
Heh! Just the ugly elven paper dolls.
|
small hallways!!!
i HATE to see one of my party members walking the OTHER WAY when i tell the whole group to move...its usually the same one who does it i killed aerie for it once because she did it like 6 times in a row heh being evil is great |
1) The Underdark was too dark - stumbling around trying to find a pathway is just annoying.
2) Reloading. Why can't we have a Retreat option and stay in the game? Bodhi certainly retreated often enough - till that last encounter (Off topic - but killing her was GREAT). 3) No options to raise your abilities like in BGI. 4) A few too many ambushes.... 5) Some long cut-scenes and such leading to a battle where you lose and its replay the whole scene. |

BGII is the best game ever, but...
1. I agree with everyone else that the cutscenes are horrible. I just cringe everytime that Irenicus walks off wit his arm around Imoen. 2. I know that I must gather my party before venturing forth! 3. I loathe the bug that installing TOB puts in Ust'Natha, so that you can't fool the Matron Mother any more. I know that there's a bugfix, but it doesn't work for me (or for my stepson, who's still trying to make it work. 4. Killing Bodhi makes all of these things worthwhile. |
for me the worst thing about both bg1 and 2, which are otherwise brilliant in scope and detail, is the atrocious enemy AI.
i don't blame the developers as much as i do the publisher, who, as usual in the make-as-much-money-as-fast-as-possible world, rushed the production and the AI was the greatest casualty. it's not like complex, intelligent scripts aren't possible; take a look at some of the mods, or the two yahoo groups that are totally devoted to just scripting. smart beholders (that won't target immune characters after a few unsuccessful attacks), enemy missile units that go after poorly armored characters, swarm attacking on tough characters, MUCH improved spell-casting (notice how enemy mages NEVER cast breach?), and so on. fortunately, places like teambg do exist with people who feel the same way so the problem, like annoying cutscenes, can be alleviated if you can trouble yourself to learn a bit of editing. for the plug and play consumer, however, the problems will remain. |
Wow! This is a lot of replies already, and I most of the times I know what you guys are talking about. ;) Thanks for explaining the deal with the Bhaalspawn, Wedin, I didn't know about that. And it really makes me curious about why Imoen is resurrectable.
I've got some new ones (mainly because of the ones named by you guys): 1) You must gather your party before venturing forth. I really hate that sentence! It mostly happens because one of my party members, which is more often my main char. DOH!, takes the wrong route.. 2) My second point I've named already. Characters walking the wrong way, once or twice. I've noticed it in BG1, and I've noticed it in BG2.. It really gets on your nerves, especially when you're about to "venture forth". 3) Ambushes rarely pose a threat to you, and the loot they have is often not even worth it. That really bugs me, cos you could have been a lot further in the game, if not ambushed. 4) The fight with Jon Irenicus (SPOILER: In Suldanesselar) is really an easy one. I mean; at the start, when you're still in his dungeon, then he kills a lot of Cowled Enforcers, certainly not the most least magic users! I surely expected more from him... 5) The dungeon of Irenicus itself gets really irritating after a while. I could practically dream that dungeon.. Turning off the Mephit thingie.. Man, I really hate that part, especially since I have to start all over again, cos I made a tiny mistake in the presettings; turning myself female instead of male.. Doh! That's about it, although I'm pretty sure I can come up with some more. Don't think I hate the game now, I really don't! It's the best game I've played so far, no doubt about it! |
Hmmm. Bad things about BG2. There arent many. I'll tell you what really pisses me off though! Imoen. She never shuts up. Whine whine whine whine whine. SHUT UP!!! Another thing is that there are no straight Thiefs which dont die in the game. And also that there arent any good Fighters. And that Druids take ages to get to level 14. Whats up with that. Do they get any bonus'? Cuz if they do I will take that one back. There are a few other annoying things but nothing really crap.

What do you mean do you mean aerie this is what i think
aerie = to weak and soppy, will you shut up about your wings Jaheira = moan moan moan such a party pooper, if you try shout at me again i will be forced to kill you Imoen = wa wa wa cry baby, if you want to go home so much go home Nalia = ohh give to the poor, dont tell me to give all my money away to beggars Viconia = well no problem here |
Its got to be these three things,
1. Ridiculously daft looking paper dolls 2. No worthwile thief, unless you play yourself 3. The ease at which you can turn Dragons from hulking great vicious monsters into little less than a pile of goo! Ta |
1. Only the protaganist can have a Familiar?? I mean come on, it's not like this is a Bhaal spawn ability...
2. There should be more interaction with your Familiar. I imagine most people only summon them for the hit point bonus ;) 3. Only one male romance [and a bad one at that] makes playing a female PC almost pointless because you miss out on so much 4. The Jester class should look more like a Jester and less like a Thief 5. The Thief's Detect Illusion skill should work passively 6. Grand Mastery should give an extra attack. 5 points in one weapon is nothing to sneeze at! |
I agree with Darkman, i thought that other charaters should be able to get familiars. I just used mine for the bonuses and kept it in my bag most of the time. I also think that as the mage grew in skill so should have the familiar, gaining strength and more spells and attacks cos they aint that strong. Paper Dolls, I HATE THE ONES IN BG2! THEY JUST LOOK SO STUPID. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO CHANGE EM?
|

I'll post a big "Me Too!" to everything Darkman said, plus these:
1: I cannot over-emphasize the lack of proper Thieves 2: The lack of NPCs in general (BG1 had more than twice as many) 3: Not only do the paper dolls all look stupid, they all look the same 4: Whatever happened to Dimension Door? Not like I use it all that much, but it'd be nice to have a way around some of those damned unpickable locks. 5: Unfinished Quests. Twisted Rune, Haer-Dalis's being framed for murder, etc. Go ahead, wait another month to release the game to the public, but finish writing the dang quests, willya? 6: Absolutely NO Monty Python references. I haven't seen one in the whole series. |
The fact you were uberpowerful at the end of 1, and in 2 there are people more uberpowerful than you'd ever was in #1.
WERE THE HELL WERE THEY THEN? I mean, why stay in Amn? Bitches. |
First, Dimension door went because sequences in the game were activated by you running over tiles and activating them, dimenson door would have messed that up.
I wanted the element of fun there was in BG1 like you know when you wandered into some random house in the docks and something you didnt expect at all happens. You could just wander in BG1 and stuff would happens. Fighers didnt have enough variety, you go up a level and you lose a point of thaco, WooHoo, ToB fixed it with the abilities but they were a litte dull in vanila SoA. There should be more possibility for evil, in SoA if you were evil you would be punished for it and it was less rewarding. Wasnt that different either. |
My biggest gripe with the game is the inability to tilt the view or zoom in, especially during battles. (And yes, I know that would require a 3D engine, but you did ask...) Combat leaves the sublime for the ridiculous as more and more figures join in, and it becomes nearly impossible to track who is where, etc. This was especially the case for me in that first battle with Irenicus, when he calls up your doubles. I've played through the game 5 times, and that battle *still* takes far too much to analyze due to the overlayering of personnel. Judge my two cents.

Nothing serious but....
1) I don't like the hide in shadows and detect traps being modes. It's either you hide or detect but can't do both simultaneously. I would have preferred being able to do both as some higher skill later on for thieves. 2) This might not make sense, but I don't see two seperate backstabs from thieves who do use two weapons. I mean if you aren't going to get any more points that can go into two weapon style, at least give thieves the chance to land two simultaneous backstabs IF they do hit( the odds are bad as is with the offhand penalty). 3) Melee classes should at least be able to spend more than 1-2 points for two weapon style. If this happens, I don't mind my thief not being able to backstab with two weapons. 4) Alot of bad npc AI and also bad pathing. Also for moving the party with scripts on, I don't like how the path breaks when a thief hides in shadows from the script. I thought there was a fix for this in the latest patch but there isn't. If you have set a destination point for a thief who stops to hide in shadows, he should attempt to reach that point after the hide failed or is successful. 5) Lack of customization for paperdolls. There is a crapload of icons and a method for importing more; there should have been some method to easily change the dolls or some sort of selection other than one. 6) The inability to pass up the cutscenes. I agree it's very annoying having to go thru chapter one and not being able to pass thru the first cutscene, although I heard a patch can reduce this time. 7) Too few npcs. Most of the npcs can be acquired in chapter two alone. There should be more and different npcs found later in the chapters. 8) No toggle for some of the special effects of spells like spell trap. 9) The random effect from moving around npc party members. In nonhostile situations, one character can move thru 3 guys blocking the path. Each of the three guys appear to get bumped away so that the first guy can move to his destination point. Yet, if those 3 guys were blocking the path and the first guy was trying to melee something in front of them, they would not get bumped in this situation. If so, it's random. Somestimes I see the first guy taking the LONG route which is really no real route to the hostile npc. He just wanders. 10) not being able to bring up the description/textbox of items in chests/shelves/bookcases or other areas. 11) I also didn't like that the protagonist was the only one who could find a familiar. Other mages need loving too. |
