I was thinking of starting a game as a monk because ive never used one yet. I don't know whether it would be worth it or not. If anyone has used one so far I'de appreciate hearing your critique of playing as a monk. I know what the abilities are, but how does that transfer into game play. It is pretty cool, or is it just kind of a waste? Thanks in advance to any that take the time to answer.

Well, just realize your monk won't be that good early in BG2, but will certainly end up as one of the best possible characters one is able to play with! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif I'm playing one now in my latest game and he's finally starting to become an interesting character (level 13 or something like that), with fists that are considered +2. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

My monk is a badass....
+4 fists, +4 to damage and thaco with gauntlets, -16 armor class, total resistance to magic, poison and other stuff, 200+ hit points, 10 greater whirlwinds and lots of other great special moves, 4.5 attacks per round... he's the best fighter type around. The only thing I'd compare to him is a dual weilding ranger, and then only if you get his resistances up and have really good stats and the crom fayr.

Think of it this way....

You're sitting in a hut on a mountaintop somewhere meditating on the meaning of life. Of course, you've shaved your head bald and live a life of chastity.
Money and material goods are meaningless in your existance. In your spare time, you practice some martial arts, merely to completely intwine your body and mind in one great philosophy of nature.

You are a monk.

I would say that a monk is the way to go. His fighting, even early on, is pretty good (at higher levels he's excellent), and his special abilities make him (in my opinion) the best fighter all around. Between stunning blows and all of his immunities, there is no downside.

I'm going thru my first game as a monk, and I must say the monk gets so powerful after lvl 15 or so that 90% of my game is practically solo with the rest of my party acting as packmules. At level 20 he's immune to normal weapons and with the right eqpt., magic resistance of 80%. Speed and power personified.

there is no downside...........................i dont know much about them but isnt NO ARMOR a downside??? Madman http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...sfiring_v1.gif

no armour is sure a downside - except for the monk. even RL monks learn weird techniques that give them resistance to fire (firewalkers) cold (the ones that sit on a mountain, naked, in winter) pain (bed of nails) and so on.

the ones in BG are just scary. they get extra -1 ac every 2 levels. at level 20 they get -1 ac, base, plus dex bonus, plus ring/cloak of protection, plus anything i forgot. and more resistances than i can even remember, plus extra movement, plus immunities to charm, hold etc.

compare with a fighter, who gets very few resistances (im not going to strip off all the magical stuff to see if there are any at all, but i severely doubt it), has a base ac of about 6 (fixed) plus dex plus ring/cloak. is not immune to anything at all without help.

look, fighters go to great length to seek out items which make you immune to charm or confusion - the monk just _is_ immune.theyr just awesome. and,if they could but disarm traps, theyd be the perfect solo class.

I'm not sure how your monk has 200+ HP. Here's what I figure:
Constitution above 16 will not affect a monk so for the first 9 levels his HP will be as follows:
9*(8+2)=90HP
The max level for a monk is 40, so he will gain another +2 HP for every level after 9 to 40 therefore 31*2=62HP. Add this to the previous and you get 152HP. Since you're not using the bracers that give +15HP for monks, the only other item that grants the most HP is the pale green loun stone which grants +10% HP, so 10% of 152 = 15HP giving a grand total of 167 HP!!!

Also, you quote 4.5 attacks per round and a monk stops gaining attacks after 4 per round. 4.5 is possible using the gauntlets of extradordinary specialisation but you are using the gauntlets of crushing.

I'm not calling you a liar http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif it's just that I've just finished with my monk and the stats are fresh in my mind.

Unless of course I've missed something.......................
