Firstly my condolences and my sympathies to all the US members of this forum for what has happened in the US this past week.
Secondly,my question.
Compared to BG and Icewind Dale, SoA has a vast number of options available to the starting player. Fighter of Thief? Sourcerer or Kensai? Everyone has their own favourite class as many polls have previously disscussed. HOWEVER who don't you ever see? Out of interest which characters would you never use? I for one would never touch a Wizard Slayer with a 10ft pole (What no potions!!!!) So who don't you do?

Encard 09-12-2001 04:45 PM

I don't play Kensai, Sorcerers, Swashbucklers, or Wizardslayers. *shrug*

I don't do ANY of the Fighter kits - just use plain Fighter
I don't do any Mage kits, just use plain Mage
Don't use Cleric's Priest of Talos kit
Don't use Paladin kits
Don't use Ranger kits
Never play Barbarian
Don't play Druid kits
Only played Monk once

Thief and Bard kits are all good
Sorcerer is good, too.

honestly, I'm willing to try any class and most kits.

The barbarian is the one that appeals to me the least, as far as class goes...

Oldrine 09-12-2001 08:06 PM

Is there anyway to create your caracter kit?

Oldrine 09-12-2001 08:09 PM

Sorry to post another Reply, but I forgot to answer:

You can use potions as a wizard slayer (health potions only though) if you install Throne of bhaal.
I think the wizard slayer is great especially in the later levels.

Skunk 09-15-2001 06:08 AM

I think that if you don't intend to dual class then NOT using a kit is, for the most part, a bit foolish - most kits offer you some advantage over the 'True class'...

I never used Wizard Slayer because he couldn't use health potions (those are the only potions my charactors ever use - I always sell the rest). Not being able to access a health potion during a battle makes it SERIOUSLY hard. On the other hand, that does offset the magic resistence your charactor gets... But the disadvantage was too big for me.

Dundee Slaytern 09-15-2001 01:24 PM

Eh????

I tried Wizard Slayer before, and they can definitely use Health Potions.

I got bored of hack and slash though... ...

Never use bards. Are they any good at fighting and stuff. Also never use druids barbarians and duel class. I do think that the ranger archer is amazing to have. Get him a good bow and he'll kill most things. I usually play as a mage or Paladin/cavalier. Mainly cause you can max out the proficiancy in 2 handed swords. and they have good resistance. Sorceres are quite good I've found. Lots of spells can be helpfull in a good long battle. Shame you can't use your magic that much in the city.

Morgan_Corbesant 09-15-2001 02:18 PM

you can if you go to the government building and pay for the magic use license. as long you dont abuse it, you wont get your butt handed to you. my fighter/mage, and my mages had fun in the city. that is the first thing i do is save up for that and pay for my license. it just makes it SO much easier in the begining.

i always play as a bard or thief, but want to complete with ALL classes (maybe someday if im really that sad http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif )

Ace Flashheart 09-15-2001 03:58 PM

I have used most kits and classes... I prefer fighters/paladins/rangers though (I like having my character at the head of the party) however i refuse to use a bard again, I am not a power gamer but bards are so *incredibly* weak.

Istaron 09-15-2001 04:04 PM

I play ONLY with wizards, true class is my favourite. I have tried other jobs, but the spell caster suits me most.

Monks could be fun to powerplay if someone just made a DBZ-kit http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

It's simple. Once the Planet is hurt, it gathers Spirit Energy to heal the injury. The amount of energy gathered depends on the size of the injury...What would happen if there was an injury that threatened the very life of the Planet? Think how much energy would be gathered! Ha, ha, ha. And at the center of that injury, wil be me. All that boundless energy will be mine. By merging with the energy of the Planet, I will be come a new life form, a new existence. Melding with the Planet, I will cease to exist as I am now. Only to be reborn as a 'God' to rule over every living soul.

The best paladin kit is Cavalier in my opinion. Conjurer mages are great. Sorcerors sucks. Barbarians too. Monks not my style. Skald is a great bard kit. My 4 favourites are pure fighter, cavalier/undead hunter, conjurer and skald.

Wizard slayers can only use health potions if you've installed TOB - in pure SOA it's not possible...

floyd 09-15-2001 09:04 PM

fighter/thiefs (and use shadowkeeper to change to assasin) are alot of fun.. The first time you backstab a mage and instantly gib them with 75 damage you realize you have chosen the right class http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Dourgan 09-15-2001 11:06 PM

Though difficult, I love to play Kensai. I would never play a mage-kit

250 09-16-2001 01:15 AM

I played Aerie, Jaheria, and that dark elf B----. and yes, I am a playboy

Ace Flashheart 09-17-2001 05:27 PM

RA, aint got nothing on the ace man... All three 1 night http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...s/coollook.gif thankyou multi-romance script. I must point out that this endevour did take up about 3 days of my time and yes I need to get out more.

Evil_Twin 09-17-2001 06:48 PM

Wow, loads on interest in this. I played around with the Caractor Creator and have now made one of each character to view their beginning stats/abilities(i was bored and lost). I still think that Wizard Slayers, Druids, Bards, Stalkers and the like are not for me but i am shure they must suit someone out there (Or they wouldn't be there. Maybe in my next game i will play as a monk.......

Sir Kenyth 09-17-2001 06:54 PM

My favorites are Paladin(Cavalier), and sorcerer. I've also played a thief(swashbuckler). I tried a multi cleric/mage too. I'm not fond of bards or druids. I don't like classes like assasin for role-playing reasons. I like to be the hero and neutral and evil alignments don't seem to fit the stereotype. I like armor so I don't like the Kensai (I personally think the Kensai should've been able to wear splint armor or less). I'm not fond of the monk class either. To me they seem a little out of place in this particular fantasy world. That's the beauty of the game though. Each to his own taste!

Zoltan 09-17-2001 07:11 PM

One of my favourites is pure fighter class. (You can have a keep, a castle! And also you can be Grand Master in any weapon, you advance level faster than a paladin or ranger, you don't have to be a goody-goody boy or shiny paladin.

As I said I don't like paladins very much but if you like to fight for honour, justice blah blah and there's goodness in your heart, to be a holy champion can be enjoying. Cavalier and Undead Hunter are nice.

My new favourite is bard it's VERY enjoying to play. I suggest everyone but if you're a newbie then go with knight or crusader.

I like straight fighters and the paladin kit Undead Hunter. I like clerics, too.
And when I play as a mage, I prefer dual-classed ones (either from a fighter or a thief) - having so few hitpoints like a pure mage makes me feel kinda uncomfortable, but that's just my personal opinion.

Two Mages Fighting Each Other (Dual vs Standard)
Std magehttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gifcasts stoneskin and spell deflection). "Hey!! You think you can win me!? You fool! Your spells will do nothing to me!!!
Dual Mage (from a fighter): *casts spell deflection too* "If you think this spell is the only thing that makes you invincible, know that I have it too!!!
** both cast a lot of spells one against other with no effect** "Magic Missile! Melf's Acid Arrow! Fear! Lightning Bolt!"...
Std Mage: "Oh no, my spell deflection is gone!!!" But wait! That fool must have run out of his spells...he doesn't have the experience I do! I still have a Spell Immunity in my arsenal!!! "I'll crush your head with my +4 Mighty Quarterstaff!!!!"
Dual Mage": *gangs up on the other mage*
Std Mage: "Ha, ha, ha!!!" *swings his staff back and forth* "Take this! And this! (misses all his blows) "AAH, HOLD STILL!"
Dual Mage (takes a 2 handed sword from under his robe)"Ha! Prepare to die! DIE, you ******** bastard! Take this! And this! And this!
Std Mage: (horrorized as he sees his stoneskin go away)"AIEEEEEEEEE!!!!! THIS IS UNFAIR!!!!!! YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO USE THIS....wait...you are a FIGHTER!?!!?! AAAAARGHHHHH!" *** the dual mage scores a critical hit with his two-handed sword and deals a 42 damage to the std mage and gibs him*** http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...l_laughter.gif

StarVid 09-25-2001 03:39 PM

I don't do fighters, clerics, or thiefs, and most specialist mages.

Seriously though, everytime I've played I've always been some sort of spellcaster. Cleric/Mage, Mage, Sorceror and Wild Mage (I'll be doing those next), occasional Bard, and that's pretty much it.

If I had to pick one that I absolutely would never play, it would probably be a Wizard Slayer. Quel Suprise...

SixOfSpades 09-25-2001 09:56 PM

Single-class Mage Vs. Thief/Mage or Thief->Mage:

SINGLE- Sees Multi, casts Invisibility or Improved Invisibility
MULTI- Sees Single starting to cast something, backs out of his sight range, goes to Stealth, and comes back before the spell finishes
SINGLE- "Ahhh, he just ran away. Coward. Waste of a memorized spell."
MULTI- Casts Dispel Magic from Stealth
SINGLE- "How'd he cast Invisibility faster than I did?"
SINGLE- Casts Melf's Acid Arrow
MULTI- Damage Taken(6)
SINGLE- "That should keep him from casting any more spells...."
MULTI- Goes to Stealth
SINGLE- "Huh?"
MULTI- Damage Taken(4)
SINGLE- Casts Ghost Armor and Deflect Magic
MULTI- Attacks Single
MULTI- Critical Hit
MULTI- Backstab Quadruple Damage
SINGLE- Damage Taken(144)
SINGLE- Death

Kitty 09-26-2001 11:16 PM

MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Well said...http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...hterpurple.gif
Personally, I prefer dual mage/thief (once having maxed out hide in shadows, find traps and open locks, of course)due to faster level progression and slightly better HP.
But either way, they're better than a single mage who can't hold his own in a fight after running out of spells. They can defend themselves from magic but once combat protections are gone, they can't resist a blow from a powerful weapon. Just some hits and he's a dead mage.
