When a thief is invisible(hiding in shadows), he can cause additional damage(depending on character level) when attacking from behind. It is possible to kill enemies with one hit, but remember that the thief gets visible when attacking.

Thieves (excluding swashbucklers) and stalkers can do it. Either Hide in Shadows or make yourself invisible, then go *behind* your target, then attack. You can only use longswords, daggers, scimitars, katanas and the like (excluding 2H swords since thieves can't use them).

If you dual a fighter to a thief, can they backstab with 2h-swords? or am I wrong, and fighter/thiefs dualled still can't use 2h-swords?

best thing to do, is to get a fighter/thief. then go up a few levels, put all points into steal ability, then press little button that looks like a face. when it works, go behind an enemy, and attack him, voila.

You still can't use 2H swords, until you get into ToB and use the Use Any Item ability of the thief. Even then, I'm not sure if attacking with it would count as a backstab - it might just be a normal attack.

a dual or multi fighter/thief can use 2H swords but backstabbing wont work. sometimes i stab with a short sword and switch to the 2H once im revealed.

Intrestingly, you can backstab w/ a quarterstaff.

To get invisible again after you have backstabbed you (the theif backstabing) will need to either get out of visual range of (I believe ALL) monsters in the area and then try your stealth ability again, or stay where you are and turn invisible via a ring or quaffing a potion then go for another backstab.

Your Stealh/invisiblity can be removed via spells - the most powerfull being True S.. (TOB expansion has a cloak somewhere in the game that allow your char. to become undetectable via these spells).

I have tried and it is just a normal attack. Which kind of sucks but I guess it keeps the game in balance.
