Just wished to reply to Legolas' questions in the Own Game thread. The Upholder hasn't been defeated every time. In the temple (on earth) you see a couple of fragments of some two stories. The first one shows you the destruction of a powerful civilization (the real story: the civilization was Atlantis. They were willing to sacrifice their civilization in order to keep the world from being thrown into hell --> the Upholder wasn't defeated this time). The other story shows you the extinction of the dinosaurs, and the following ice age. This all was caused by the Shadow Empire, which broke free and conquered Earth --> again the Upholder wasn't defeated.

Okay. So it's not saving the world, but saving your civilisation.

Once again I have to ask you to post everything you have so far. (That would mean people can just read the first page of this topic instead of plowing through the other one)

We'll see if we can improve some things here and there http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

And here I am!! Legolas must be very excited about this!!http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gifhttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

The story is as following:
Somewhere in the South American jungle, and archaeological search party is trying to find a secret temple. They eventually find it, yet do not know the exact danger of what's inside. The three leaders of the party enter the temple, the indian workers are too afraid to follow them. Inside the temple they discover a circular room, which is lit by a hole in the roof. In the center of the room they notice a book, and they wonder how something that old can still be intact. The moment they open the book, they are teleported to a strange place, known as the Halfworld. The Halfworld is actually the center of the "parallel" universe, and the world where all races live. The Earth is just the planet for the race known as humans.
In the beginning the three archaeologists do not know why they're in the Halfworld, and because they are separated things are even more complicated. Little by little they find out that one of them (and which one is not sure yet) is the One. The One who will defeat the Upholder of the Shadow Empire, a dark place where demons and evil beings roam (NOTE: the complete story; Every six thousand years, one of the empires (either Shadow or Good, that depends on who won 6000 years earlier) is granted the chance to take back what was "rightfully theirs").
Because neither of you know a thing about the things happening in the Halfworld, and the Archmage of Wizard Isle is the only one who could tell you, money is needed to reach that island. In order to get the money you have to perform certain quests (which could allow you to "recruit" party members). The rest of the story unfolds from there..

I'd like to keep the storyline this "vague" because otherwise there can't be anyt twistin' and tunin', if y'all understand what I'm saying. For the new ones on this topic: it is to help me with this story, give ideas, etc. It might help to read the first thread (given in the first post of this thread, but it's nine pages long, so consider before starting that.

Haddar - Servant of Talos 09-09-2001 01:52 PM

Ah, this can turn out to something good. But have you decided yet on the
gun-issue?

Does this story mean the Shadow Empire won 6000 years ago and you now help the good empire to take back what is rightfully theirs, or did the good empire win and you now help it to fight back the rising Shadow Empire? Will someone from the original party of archaeologists help the Upholder because of dissappointment at not being the chosen one? Will you always be the One, or is it possible that another Archaeologist is the One and you "only" help him/her defeat the Upholder, which could be just as challenging?

Link 09-09-2001 03:26 PM

Legolas is feeling depressed again...http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gifhttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gifhttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif
OK. Here are the answers to Haddars questions in correct order:

1) Gun.. not too sure, i could use some advice on this one. Either you put something with a gun in the intro (guns+ghosts won't work..) or you could give a character a gun, and allow you to shoot creatures, but you'll run out of bullets someday, so the gun'll become useless then.
2) The Shadow Empire did not win 6000 years ago. It did win a couple of times, which resolved in the destruction of Atlantis, and the extinction of the dinosaurs.
3) It is the idea to let someone of the three archaeologists walk over to the evil side. That would be awsome. It wouldn't even be clear who it'll be, until the end, when he will fight against, instead of with you.
4) I think you're always the one, yes, but real good ideas could change my mind..

BTW: wouldn't it be cool to create the Dark Avariel. Instead of butterfly wings they'd have bat-like wings. AWSOME!!!!!!

Bleys 09-09-2001 07:49 PM

Can the player walk the Darkside, or will you have to be the good guy?

Link what is Halfworld like anyway, is it a world like baldur's gate, or an image of earth but it has demons and monsters crewling about, or something else? Also you say no guns but how advanced are the people living there?

Legolas the Elven Archer 09-10-2001 10:09 AM

The advancement? From what I could gather, think Dark Ages with lots of fantasy creatures and ancient relics.
Instead of having a gun, one of the other archologists could have been a bodyguard instead, and if he/she is the one to deflect, you'd have some tough moments. Think something in rambo style here, so with a couple of bullet chains and a hand grenade or two. That way, you never needed to carry a gun, and the other character just uses it until it runs out and grabs one or two of those chopping knifes they use in the jungle. The problem is effectively solved, since the shooting of the gun is left to someone else and is a regular attack (unless you have complete control over everyone in your party that is. Do you?)
About the traitor, it could also be both, or none, depending on your behaviour in the game and a bit of luck.
And about not being the one, maybe the assistance mode could be unlocked after you've beaten the game. Usually, you are the main character because that's whose part is most interesting, and usually most heroic too.

We're getting back on the right track here. Not depressed anymore http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gifhttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gifhttp://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

In agree with Legolas' post about the Halfworld. It's like the Dark Ages, and thus more or less "behind in civilization" compared to Earth.
