I thought the fact that you could kill the Shadow and Red dragons with Death clouds, without them reacting pretty lame...
How bout you? Did you find some part of BG II to be kinda lacking in someway? |
I guess my biggest complaint would be your parties lack of AI when sending them to locations. While moving accross the screen I've had characters hike out of the postal code is another NPC so much as bumps them on a way down a corrider.

The speakers in the german version are pretty boring.

Thats why I am glad I have the american version..In fact the only German RPG I ever bought was Fallout 2 (had to have it) and it sucked, No Blood and guts and lame translations.
|
Yeah, the american version rules! I have ´em both. First, I got the american version. But I wanted to convince my girlfriend of CRPGs, that´s why I bought the german version, too. It´s the only one I have by now, the a.v. I lent a friend.http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

You spend half of the game fighting your way to rescue Imoen, just to find out she's long way behind in levels when compared to your other party members http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif
But after all, she's your sister. |

My gripes with BGII are very cosmetic ones.
I don't like how the avatar's look on the inventory screen. I also don't like how robes look on human females. Also, I feel it's a bit biased towards Good. I don't like how the dialog options sometimes force your PC to come out sounding naive, uninformed or foolish. ------------------ a bunch of long hairs. trux [This message has been edited by trux (edited 08-20-2001).] |
I hated how characters started at high levels and got obscenely powerful, and the developers have to throw multiple dragons and liches and super uber-powered mages in your way, and you just end up using cheese tactics.
Its just unbalanced, plus I hated the city setting. I liked BG1's open spaces and quests a lot more, and I just sped past the city parts. Its all the exploration thats really cool, like you never know what you'll find in a certain location. I remember when I stumbled upon a bunch of red wizards in the forest in BG1..and a wyvern pack and all that. BG2 is just..boring because you dont get to use your character's skills as much..or so in my opinion. ------------------ Resident Lurker Guy |
A couple of minor gripes...
No clear indication of your damage dealing potential (especially annoying if your playing monk). I just think it would be nice to see to be able to hold the mouse over your quick slot and be told 7-10 damage, or something, Diablo 2 does it well... Felt that more fantastic creatures would be better, seems to be too many humanoid type critters... Also I wish flying critters flew and didn't walk around... I agree on the mismatch of later levels and the preponderance of good, it was hard pursue an evil path, when going the good path gave better rewards in terms of exp.s and items. (The one real exception so far is the mage in the underark...) One lame thing that bothered me was beating a hard opponent to find they had been using a staff or a short sword with no magical properties, at least give them +1 or +2... |
The sheer number of magical items just amazed me.
When I played PNP AD&D we might have called the BG milieu a giveaway show campaign, being used to a world where a +3 sword was really something to write home about, and a rare and unusual thing. The BG world seems to have reaped the benefits of having 10,000 mages spending their entire careers enchanting everything they see. The world is awash in magic potions, items, weapons. On the other hand, my characters die on a regular basis, and the party often takes hundreds of hp in damage from tough encounters, so perhaps you could say that the rewards and risks are balanced. Its just my opinion, but I liked it better when magic was more rare and special. It seems that I remember reading about tthe spell that an MU would need to cast to create a magic item, and it was a really long and complex spell. [This message has been edited by Terence The Unspecial (edited 08-21-2001).] |
The lamest thing i've found so far (Other than the defeat of dragons with meteor swarms and such.) is the fact that enemy mages always carry a vocalize spell. What use is power word silence if the enemy can always cast vocalize? I wouldn't care, but the fact is they aren't supposed to be able to do that! Once you're silenced you can't cast anything! So why can the enemy do it?
------------------ Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I just don't have to listen. http://train.missouri.org/~prestons/.../flamedrag.gif |
the spell vocalize itself does not require vocal components. But while the enemy is casting Vocalize, it isn't casting shadow door and therefore I can breach his/her protection from magical weapons and my barbarian can come and kick its ass. also, priests can't cast vocalize. (I think)
|
Not enough evil npcs that can join your party. You cant be all the interesting races like the Githyanki. Also any German, or other foreign version game sucks. The reason is that in Germany theres a law! No Blood and a lot of violence in games! In America theres no law like that! Remember the game Carmageddon. In the US version you run over pedestrians and senior citizens lol. In the UK version you run over zombies with green blood LAME. In the german version you run over robots with no blood at all ahahaha. The dirty politicians wanna make a law about it! We need blood and violence to suppress our needs.

Well, I think I can explain the hordes of magical items...BG2 is something of a crossover between 2nd and 3rd edition, and in 3rd it is MUCH easier to create magical stuff...hell, a first level mage can do it if they are willing to lose xp (to a certain extent). As for my biggest problems with the game:
1. I don't know about the others, but the mage stronghold BLOWS! Okay, fine, so you can't make magical items and golems and turn yourself into a lich and stuff, but a planar sphere should AT LEAST be able to...oh, I don't know...TRAVEL THE PLANES!! I mean come on... 2. I agree with trux that the dialougues often leave you sounding dumb...SPOILER...It would be so cool if you cloud say..."Well, I think I'l be leaving with her now...IRENICUS or something of the sort. I think ymost of you know what part I am talking about, don't want to spoil too much. 3. Similar to my second problem with the game, BG2 has a problem many games have which is that when you read a scroll, apparently you do not READ THE SCROLL. I really hope they learn to fix this soon in games, as it really ruins any feeling of connection with your character as in knowing what he knows, and trying to figure things out when you read a scroll that says something to the effect of "haha, I will hide inside this clown outfit and talk to Starkiller, once his guard is lowered I will trap him in another plane!!" You put the scroll in your bag, walk about ten steps and then...oh look, a clown! "Hello mr. clown, I...aaahhh..." I saw it coming, WHY DIDNT MY CHARACTER? 4.Why isn't there a more evil dialougue line with Irenicus. Why do you have to say "I will destroy you" I always found the hinted at power that Irenicus could have unlocked for you much more interesting, but there is no way to follow up on it, and finally 5.You are a child of Bhaal, shouldn't you have something special and cool about you. A CHILD OF A GOD should have something more than a couple inherent 2nd level priest spells. Maybe some specially taylored powers? Something? Someone? Come on, maybe? Thank you for listening to my rant. Despite all this, I love the game. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif ------------------ "Not everything ends the way you think it should" |

This may be going out on a limb but...
How about lack of horses you can ride. If the landscapes were bigger horses would be cool. More money to spend(barding, lances, saddle bags, etc.) And how about monster lairs? I get to what I think is a monster lair and there is only like 10 guys there, I remember on paper there would be close to 60 or 70, nearly impossible ya know. Hmm, I don't remember my guys being hungry at all, I have not once needed iron rations anyone else? I doubt it. Anybody find a keyring? that would be a great addition too. Having a house of my own would also help. I seem to run out of space in my inventory all the time. I know about the bag of holding but whatever. I think if Baldur's Gate and the Ultima 7's were combine somehow you could have an awesome game. |
Too many magical items, it's just a hack 'n' slash game, and starting at high levels blow, 2nd level, yes, 3rd level, maybe, but 7th-8th level? No way, that's just too high, and being the child of a god is useless, I mean, the damn avatar just SUX! My mage is more powerful in close combat when wielding his Staff Of The Magi than as the slayer, too few evil NPCs, too few locations, too many bonusses given to "good" behaviour, I mean, discounts, rewards, and all that stuff, when you're evil, maybe you should be allowed to trade with the smugglers and slave traders and get special stuff there, also, NPCs almost NEVER react differently due to your alignment, there's ONE place in ToB where one NPC does, but no more than ONE place in SoA.

Well, the point being about a house. Not everyone lives in a castle or stronghold. Many adventures go home at the end of the day, to a one- or two-story house. I haven't played Ultima, but I've seen what it's like, and yes I do agree that a mix with the two games would be awesome. In Ultima you can be anything, the whole world is composed of PC's, and there are no NPC's (at least I don't think there are). You go to the Blacksmith to have armor made, SOMEONE is playing the Blacksmith, and so if they don't want to sell something to you, they don't have to.

Would love more opportunities for romance between the characters....especially for the females.
More movies within the game would be great, especially between the chapters. Better familar characters....ones that actually do something. Still the best game I've played. Looking forward to ending it so I can start Throne of Bhal, Bunny |
What did I find lame about the game? The fact that it ended.... http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/crying.gif
------------------ I am the walrus!.... er, no hang on.... http://www.animfactory.com/animation...ing_lg_clr.gif A fair dinkum laughing Hyena! |
A thing I find really annoying is that everytime you start a new game you have to spend hours of real time to get out of Irenicus´ dungeon. The design itself is cool enough, it gives new players a chance to familiarise (...you know what I mean) with the game, but a quick way out would be a convenient alternative. Also A more realistic flow of time could be rather cool: You can take hundreds of in-game days to finish just one quest.
And wherein lies the Power Of The Dark Side? A few dialogue optionds which leads to the same result anyway, unless you turn people down, in wich case you lose potentially big parts of the game. Less XP, higher prices with no alternative shopping possibilities, and in general the same game as if played by a good-aligned PC. Hell, even the divine abilities are cooler for goodies... Anyway, still the coolest thing that ever happened to my computer, especially because my ideal character is a Paladin (yes!). |
Well, Neb mentioned that it is stupid to start at level 7-8, but this was unavoidable since one of the KEY features of the game was to be able to import your BG1 character which ended at around that level. I know I found that cool. One more cool thing, if a little fanciful, would have been if there was destinction at certain points in the game based on how powerful you are. I played one game like this, and it would be cool if you reimported a character, and the game could tell and let you fight Irenicus when you get out of his dungeon, and maybe let you fight him in spellhold alone if you want if you are over a certain level. But the one really huge thing for me which I forgot to put in my last post is...why, oh WHY, cant I have A DIMENSION DOOR SPELL!! EVERY OTHER CRAPPY MAGE IN THE GAME WHO I SLAUGHTER HAS ONE. Fine, limit it, make it only useable at certain times, or to send you to your stronghold or something, but come on, no self-respecting mage can truly raise their head high and call themselves powerful, or even adequate, when your APPRENTICE can teleport about as he wishes, and you cant even manage FIVE INCHES!! Sigh...what a ripoff http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
------------------ "Not everything ends the way you think it should" |
I thought the sudden plague of liches and dragons was silly - could they not find other enemies to create a challenge? Where were all the other giant types perhaps?
Also the uninterruptible hour-long spiels by villains/NPCs where you have to listen to their gloating/insults and you can't say anything back at them was shit ------------------ In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is pimp. |
1.I absolutely HATE that 'you must gather your party before venturing forth' sample.
2.Its lame how locations are recycled through the game (the bar that the lich is in is recycled numerous times, most of the time with the secret door, even..) 3.The multi-part weapons are all basically not worth the time and energy to collect, save for the Crom F, Mace of Disruption, and the Flail of Ages. 4.Taking the evil path isn't well fleshed out. Only the quests for Bodhi are legitimate evil quests. 5.Major graphic slowdown in large battles, even on an 850 mhz, 256 mb ram, geforce 2 computer. 6.5 summoned creature limit 7.inability to use summoned creatures as scouts (part the fog of war), or as trap fodder (only sometimes works) 8.no simple way to tell exactly what enchanments/protections are cast on any one enemy at one time. This makes mage battles overly complex. 9.the very annoying globe animation that accompanies the cloak of mirroring makes it hard to see your characters in battle. Its still a great game, but far from perfect. |
It is rather lame that the game is suited to good parties much better than evil parties..
It just is really hard to find decent evil NPC's. |
Some lame things...
1. Few protection from undead scrolls in a game where there are a lot of undead to fight. 2. Spells which descriptions made them apparently powerful (chromatic orb is one of them), when actually most enemies could do the saving throw. 3.The fact you spend half of the game fighting your way to rescue Imoen, just to find out she's way behind in levels (I think I've already mentioned this before, but here it goes). 4. Few options for your PC voice, and some of them were unbearable. 5. Most of +3 and higher weapons with special properties were of the slashing type (namely long swords and two-handed swords). There should be more enchanted blunt weapons. 6. Jon Irenicus is a mage, so why the game designers made him so obviously muscular? |
We'll I was expecting random events in the stronghold, like attacking orcs and armys at the keep, random.
|
The limit on spells you can have in your spell book, I dont mind I can only cast a certain # of spells. But how many per level I can have in my book!

> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Answers (some in jest, some not): 1. Maybe they actually wanted you to fight some of the undead toe-to-toe (you know, make it actually a little challenging http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif ). Of course, you could just get Anomen, get him leveled up, then have him turn undead while walking through Bohdi's lair. All you'll see are little explosions (actually, that's something I found lame; how come shadows blow up into little solid pieces when turned?). 2. All of the spell descriptions make them sound like they are the baddest spells in the game, when in reality, many of them suck (can you say Sleep and Shocking Grasp? http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif ). That's why Sorcerers are cool; give them all of the spells that are cool that you will use repeatedly (like Breach, etc.), have a mage in the party to learn the rest (lots of backup and "just in case" spells) and your party will rock. 3. Definitely agree with you about Imoen. She was my favorite NPC in BG1, and I would have liked to have her throughout the game in BG2. You can at least remedy this somewhat by bringing lots of scrolls in scroll cases for her, then kicking everyone else out of the party (except for your romantic interest, or you'll lose them) before she learns her spells. With ToB attached, you can keep multiples of the same spells, have her learn them, erase them from her book, and relearn them (great way to rack up lots of xp http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif ). However, there is one thing that bothered me even more than that. When I heard BG2 would have romances, I was hoping she would be one of the options (she was really the only option I was interested in). Then they just have to go and make her your sister, just to really spoil everything. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif I guess someone could whip up a romance option for her, but it would just be...icky. 4. Yep, hated the voice options, too. However, at least this is something that you can remedy by downloading from websites (there are quite a few out there that have voice packs). I also hated the pictures; why are my options only the pictures of the other NPCs? If I like Edwin's picture and choose it for my character, then add Edwin, now I start getting confused about who is who. I downloaded some pictures, too, so I would have more options. 5. Well, the best weapon in SoA (Crom Faeyr) happens to be a blunt weapon. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif In fact, one of the best weapons to upgrade in ToB (the Flail of Ages) is a blunt weapon, too. And how about the mace of disruption upgraded? You know, when you fight all of those undead creatures because you have no scrolls to keep them away? http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif Oh, the Staff of Woodlands, the Staff of the Magi, etc. The class of weapons I thought was way too powerful was the two-handed swords. In the pen and paper campaign, two-handed swords are not common (especially magical ones; long swords are the most common). In SoA, you are insane not to have someone using a two-handed sword. 6. In fact, why is Jon so buff WHEN HE IS AN ELF. Every time I start an elf, I have a little scrawny guy (18/91 strength, and Mazzy looks more muscular than I do http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif ). It looks like they took a picture of Arnold as Mr. Freeze in "Batman and Robin," changed it up a bit, then plopped him in the middle of the game. Jon looks like he's been taking steroids for about ten years. Maybe that's why the dryads can't get a rise out of him; maybe a certain part of his anatomy has shrunk to the point that he can't get it up anymore. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif However, one of my big pet peeves is this: How come, every time I have a random encounter (or even half of the encounters I have when I first enter a new area), the enemy appears SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF MY PARTY. I have 2 rangers and a thief in the party (all of which are supposed to be more alert/able to detect enemies than other characters); how come they can just sneak up on my party that easily? Are my guys that dense that they can't see enemies coming, even in the middle of the street? I waste all kinds of time getting my mages out of harm's way, rather than using them to cast spells. This really annoys the hell out of me! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/mad111.gif ------------------ http://www.animation-station.com/skulls/skull019.gif Death is only the beginning... |

The worst thing about the game was there was no dog that just escaped from an explosion I was very annoyed. ahem.
Aside from that the char models mainly sucked and I wish there were better things they could do with specialist mages as in Invokers get some special spell only they can get or something along those lines. ------------------ http://www.facelink.com/edit/raw/raw...43/1922643.bmp |
