For some reason BG2 is the most unstable game I've ever played. When I'm in a big battle I'm more worried about the game crashing than me dying. It will either minimize and be "not responding" or "Assertion failed in ChDataType(?) at line 250" or occasionally it just freezes. Would the unsupported resolutions be a cause of this? (I've got it on 1024x768).
All my drivers are updated and all that. The only other thing I can think of is my processors are overclocked and when the sun is out, the comp gets pretty hot which increasing the frequency of the crashes. I've never had this happen on any other game I've played. It's really annoying when I get halfway through a big fight (multiple times) in good shape and then have to start over. Anyone else have this problem or know of it's cause (even if it can't be fixed)? ------------------ "Max Power doesn't abbreviate, each letter is as important as the one before it.. maybe even MORE important.. no, as important" -Homer Simpson |
BG2 has only crashed once or twice in my 50+ hours of gameplay. And then it usually just hangs, mouse cursor stops moving and needs a cold reboot.
I'm assuming you have the latest patch? And if you really think its caused by overclocking, clock your processor and/or video card down and see if you still get crashes. Anyway, I hate to say it, but it is something in your configuration, cause BG2 isn't that unstable. |
The unsupported resolution can cause that, because it's not supported. That means nobody tested it for compatibility with this game.

I have never had BG II crash on me in all the many many hours I have played it but then again I have never run the unsupported resolutions.

BG2 is one of the MOST stable games i have played.......

I think you will experience almost zero crashes if you use a supported resolution. Slowdown, yes. Crashes, hardly ever. ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/memnochsig.gif |
I've never experienced any game stability problems with BG2. Why not try one of the 'official' resolutions (say, 800 x 600) and see if the problems go away?
If it doesn't at least you know it's not the higher resolution that is causing the crash. My screen resolution is 1024 x 768, but I play BG2 at 800 x 600. ------------------ "Butt-kicking for goodness!" - Minsc "Cities always teem with evil and decay. I'll try it with the supported resolutions and see what happens. Sometimes my game crash when i leave rooms or buildings. Can the patch fix this?

Check to see if it's on the list of bugs fixed. www.bioware.com

Hmm...well. My BG2 just randomly closes every now and ten. But thats usually only after I've been playing it for a few hours.

Sorry to hear you have such troubles http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif
Milio, have you this problem now only with BG or with other games too? Anyway, I'd suggest the problem is not BG, but something in your system http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif Actually BG is really very stable game. The only time when I had problem with it, it was because of conflicting devices in my PC - surely not game's fault... Also, try to check video adapter. |

The only annoyance I have with the game is with the game crashing to desktop everytime one of the ridiculous little video cut sequences comes up...not the major ones at the beginning of each chapter, or the dream sequences, but the "sleep" graphics or the "change of day to night" graphics. It consistently crashes on me during those if I don't hit the ESC key with the speed of a cobra. I'd love to disable those, but I have no idea how to do so.
Also: it's random as to whether those come up or not. Other than that, I have to agree with Memnoch, it's a very stable game as far as in-game play goes. Cheers, ------------------ http://www.wizardrealm.com/images/saz.gif |
It really sounds like it could be to do with overclocking and heat - maybe the game is pushing your processor harder than any other game you have - it isn't as intensive for video as others such as doom/quake so i don't really suspect it is to do with resolution - try and slow the processor down to its 'correct' speed and give it another try

PS - I forgot to ask
Are you running W2000, NT 4.0, 98 or 95? I'm sure I've read that 98 is 'less stable' although please don't flame me for this quote or even start another thread about it, Its just a rumor I'm sure I heard |
How about posting your system specs and your game settings so we can get to the bottom of your problems.
I have my PC overclocked 1.2Ghz TB at 145x10 and am running all the game settings maxed out. And have not had one crash in over 40hrs+ Game play. What type of RAM do you have? Your type of problem is usually caused by cheap/no name RAM. So post your specs and we will see if we can better help you http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif |
I had an overclocked processor aswell and most of my games including bg2 would crash to desktop all the time so if your overclocked that is probably your problem.

To save you posting your specs, click here for Bioware's cool system tool. It does the following:
SysInfo is a handy application developed at BioWare Corp. for use with our games. The SysInfo tool serves two purposes. Firstly, it checks a computer system to see that all the requirements are met to be able to install and play Baldur’s Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. Secondly, it is able to save the information on system specs as well as details on BGII configuration into a text file (Info_TOB.txt). This text file can then be used for customer support purposes to facilitate bug reporting. No other information from your computer is saved to this file, so your privacy is protected. Just execute and run. ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/memnochsig.gif |

Thanks everyone for the responses. This board moves faster than I thought!
Specs: Athlon 1GHz Iwill KK266 motherboard 256MB Crucial PC133 Radeon64 with latest drivers Soundblaster Live! All these parts were moved over from my old Celeron system. They worked fine there, I played through the whole game on that system with no problems. I checked the CPU temp after the game crashed, and it wasn't too hot. I do think this new system is generally less reliable than my old one. It's really pissing me off. I was playing though the final battle again with Irenicus and had just killed the Slayer form and was about to finish him off, with no significant harm to my party, and the game crashed!!! Grrr.... I'm a bit hardware geek, so I've done all the bios updates and such. I really think this VIA board is crap. If anyone knows what the "Assertion failed in ChDataType" error really means, I'd love to know. Until then I guess I'll just have to wait until the nForce comes out and hope that fixes my problems. |
Does anyone in here ever get the message. A fatal exception has happened at...
It doesn't matter where I am in the game when I save the computer sometimes does this. What's up? ------------------ Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I just don't have to listen. http://train.missouri.org/~prestons/.../flamedrag.gif |
