I would say an 8.....but only because i think the cloak of mirroring unbalances the game. Oh and the equalizer sucks. I would leave it out http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Coz of my proficiencies I really need a decent longsword.

What would you recommend then??

trux 07-22-2001 04:46 PM

the best long sword in the game (in my opinion) comes near the end of the game.

IntrospectiveIdeals 07-22-2001 04:50 PM

yeah blackrazor i've heard, i mean now, my daystar is getting tediously inneficient.

Jerome 07-22-2001 04:57 PM

I usually use a combo of one of Roses and the Daystar on my Kensi. (dual weild)
Though i'm putting points into Katana to get Celestial Fury http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Innefficiant? With a -8 THACO? I dont think that would be to easy! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/ponder.gif

Use missile reflection shield, sword of rosses (until you get Blackrazor) and go roast gax for his ring. =) If you plan to use this guy in ToB, you should have run Bastard swords though... Foe bane... *thinks happily*

Seid 07-22-2001 06:22 PM

I think sword of Balduran is good. Your character is great! 9/10.

You cannot escape the inevitable.

Xod 07-23-2001 01:23 AM

I'd give him a 7, for two reasons:

1. No kit, straight fighter. You could have had a Berserker without any penalties considering the equipment you use. While enraged you get: +2 to hit, +2 damage, -2 AC. The berserker at this time is immune to charm, hold, fear, maze, imprisonment, stun and sleep. He also gains 15 hit points while enraged.

2. Grand Mastery in Long Swords. IMHO, there are no really good longswords in the game. I think that the Two-Handed swords are generally better in SoA.

Just my opinion...

I'd have to agree with Xod. Should've at least made your guy a beserker. Isn't Blackrazor only a +3? Anyway, Two-handed swords are probably the best group of weapons in the game. Long swords are average. Axes are nice tho..so I give you a 7.5

floyd 07-23-2001 03:55 AM

Yeah, Blackrazor is nice.. But I never seem to notice any level-draining on opponents with it. Does it list those effects in the msg bar, or not? Also you have to sorta ... sacrifice to get Blackrazor.

You have a nice character, pretty high lvl for where you are at in the game. I dual-classed, and wasn't as high by then..

EssE 07-23-2001 06:05 AM

There's really not much point in putting skills at sword and shield style in my opinion...
And i think straigt fighters are a bit boring to play so u get a 7 even though ur character is really powerful..

DonkeyWan 07-23-2001 08:01 AM

what are your hit points?

Actually, thats quite good, as for the equalizer, its good against the right kind of opponent, but for an all round weapon, not the best.

I like the 5 proficiencies in long sword, very nice....

Draggor 07-23-2001 09:00 AM

Very good, I give you a 9. You just lose a point due to having long swords and because you don't have a missile weapon. Long swords are good but there are better weapons. With 5 proficiencies and an amazing thaco you want the most powerful weapon possible. Don't worry about equilizor, wait for angurvadal in TOB. Sword and shield style is a bit of a waste too but I guess seeing as you have proficiencies to spare why not. If you want to use a shield though then get the axe azure edge and put your next 5 proficiencies in axes. TOb has an awesome axe which you might want too.
By the way my best character is a true class fighter, so I know what I'm saying. Nothing wrong with playing a true class fighter at all.

5 out of ten, if playing in a party.

why the low rating? too much redundant equipment & proffs.

a) why use the fire control ring when you have the cloak of mirrors, can't another party member use some resistance to fire?. a different choice could be ring of air control, gives improved invisibility and ribald has a whole bunch of them.

b) with saving throws that low the harmony shield is overkill.

c) 2 proff's in sword and shield. more weapon flexibility would have been better. sword & shield is easily the worst weapon style.

d) 5 stars in long sword? only good w/ the gm patch, if you haven't patched then more than 3 stars is a waste imo.

e) with only two weapons that your char is skilled in neither are blunt. some mace skill would be real handy when fighting a monster immune to slashing weapons.
------------
stuff that i like about your char:

a) equalizor, it's a very good weapon in some situations and will reduce your need for the harmony shield, and allow you to use a better (lower ac) shield.

b) axes, azure edge is one of the best items in the game availble early (and is the easiest to get.)

c) choice of long sword in general (even better for elf's +1 th+d) with a good selection of longswords, daystar, dragon killer, equal, flame tounge, the drinker, flaming sword, ect ect you get to use a bunch of different weapons in diff situations. (in some cases the "right" longsword outclasses even the power weapons)

d) no kit, intresting most would have chosen one, you get bonus points for not doing so.

e) no gaxx ring.

DonkeyWan 07-23-2001 01:32 PM

I've heard the shield v's no shield argument before. Personally, I find most characters can't take the loss in armour class until the final chapters, so to make the game easier throughout, I would argue a shield is an essential. I know the old nutmeg, 'but ToB', however, it is only an add-on and as such even with it, 50% of your game time will be made easier by shields. As to sword and shield style, its not so useless as to not warrant a few proficiencies if your going gaming with a shield all the time. Also, I though the cloak of mirroring (or whatever)was not 100% a stopper, and only good for spells below a certain level. I know, its a dumb addition to the game, it really makes life a tad too easy, then again how many times have you come against nigh invincibles critters with 100% magic resistance, not quite as bad as getting your nasty magic back to you, but irritating nonetheless. I'll give you the gaxx ring though, that would be overkill....

My level 17 elf Kensi has a THAC0 of -14 and -12, dual weild (Long sword of roses and Celestial fury if you're wondering) He deals out about 18-25 damage each hit and has 4 attacks per round! Nothing lasts long enough to hurt him! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Except for those f**king adamite golems.....http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...s/rolleyes.gif

I don't mind. They are all weak there anyway. Even I could wipe them all out. They give Drow a bad name. Now, my Fighter is another story..

Viking 07-23-2001 03:22 PM

I have an almost identical fighter, with these differences:

Berserker

Has the exp. Cap at 2950 000 xp.

has 5 in long swords, 3 in Two Weapon Style, 2 in War Hammer,

Wielding Crom Fayer in the off hand, giving me 25 in strength, with the best long sword in the main hand.

As for tacho, you don't really need more than -8, do you? Because..with -8, you will ALWAYS hit on a natural 2. (Hits armour class -10 I think..)

So, with these differences, and these stats, what do you give my Berserker of death, with 4 attacks per round (Without the patch)?

Str: 25
Dex: 19
Con: 19
Int: 11
Wis: 15
Cha: 19

Kitty 07-23-2001 08:51 PM

Some people say straight fighters suck in BG II. Considering the kits available in the game, I had also thought about that.
However, in my first game, I went with a human straight fighter, just for roleplaying (I really like pure fighters). I ended up loving my character even knowing he had no racial or kit bonuses. Most people (including me) would think about taking a more powerful race (dwarves or half-orcs) or a better kit, but as I just said, you get somewhat emotionally "attached" to your PC if you are roleplaying-wise.
Anyway, I don't regret being a pure fighter. He had most of the kills in my party.

Jerome 07-23-2001 08:53 PM

Yet you can't help but be attached to your little homegrown gnomish barbarian http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../1orglaugh.gifhttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../1grlaugh2.gifhttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no.../1orglaugh.gif

a gnomish barbarian? what the hell, I can picture it, rarrgh I'm gonna rip your spine out and strangle you with it.... right after I dance with these fairies amongst the mushrooms... somehow it doesn't ring right...

btw, has anyone noticed the differing definitions for gnomes throughout the d&d landscape?

Redblueflare 07-24-2001 04:31 PM

7.5 Now that i'm playing TOB I'm realizing that longswords aren't all that powerful. With the equalizer constantly being ineffective, I tossed it and picked up the nifty rune hammer. My fighter is currently weilding the rune hammer and Crom Faeyer with dual weild. Much more effencient than two longswords. (Especially with Crom Faeyer's huge strength bonus!) I also dislike sword and shield style. Fighters should never use sheilds. Either two handed weapons style, or dual weild. Other than that he's pretty darn good.

Jerome 07-24-2001 09:22 PM

The only incentive to go with the sheild is the AC bonus.....since the Sentinal Sheild gives you and extra -5 to your Armour Class, with the right stuff nearly nothing in the game can hit you http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I give him a 6. Mainly this is becuase I think that plain fighters are boring. Also, I hate longswords! I have to agree that 2-handed is the best. Being that I play a kensai/mage I don't really need sword/shield so I think that was a waste. I like dual wielded Celestial Furies better!

Icing Death 07-25-2001 03:35 AM

6.8/10

No Kit
As most have said, Long swords generally aren't as good as most of the weapons. Two Handed swords are good, but dual weilding is jusr as good-more attacks, varied effects- Crom Faeyr + Celestial Fury is niiiiiiiicehttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif 25 Str Hard Hitting Beast that quite often will freeze your opponent allowing you to get a possible extra round of attacks inhttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
Celestial Fury would make a good ocmbination with weapons such as Belm.

A Suggestion: If yuo wanted to you could dual class your Fighter into a mage and have a kickass hitting magehttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif Dakkon's Blade would go quite nicely into that combo too.

Nolek Psyphon 08-14-2001 01:49 AM

7 out of 10. Could be better with the celestial fury (my favourite weapon in the game).

Aurum 09-03-2001 08:56 PM

Zoltan 09-04-2001 06:50 AM

Come onnn let's not exaggerate Celestial Fury. What's the difference between CF and Daystar? CF is a +3 weapon but Daystar makes +4 to evil (most of evil creatures in game are evil) lets not forget the other abilities of Daystar. Not only Daystar there's lots of interesting longswords in game. And CF's lighting strike chance is only %5. And enemies MOSTLY save vs spells for stun. I dont like katanas even if they were more powerful doesnt soudns like knight.
