IF ANY OF U HAVE READ MY PREVIOUS POSTS U WILL KNOW WHY I AM STARTING A NEW GAME. I INTEND TO HAVE A NON-MAGICAL PC BECAUSE I INTEND ON TEAMING WITH ONLY AERIE IN THE BEGINING TO GET MAJOR EXP.
NOW WHO SHOULD I CHOOSE FIGHTER OR MONK? ULTIMATELY WHO IS GOING TO BE THE BETTER AT KICKING BADDIES ASSES??? AT THE MOMENT I AM SWAYED TO THINKING I SHOULD USE A HALF-ORC FIGHTER, HAVING 19 STRNGTH AND CONSTITUTION, REPLIES MORE THAN APPRECIATED. |
Monks spend all their time having haircuts and praying, go for a fighter. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

SHOULD I PUT MY INTELLIGENCE AND WISDOM AS LOW AS POSSIBLE FOR MY FIGHTER/MONK. WHICH SHOULD I HAVE HIGHER IF I HAVE EXTRA POINTS.
|
WOULD U (OR WHOEVER IS READING) AGREE THAT THE FIGHTER IS PRETTY MUCH THE BEST CLASS?
|
I like fighters but I've heard good things about Monks although I've never played one. Wisdom of 15 or over will help protect against some spells and give an increased lore bonus upon level up. High intelligence 15 or over will help protect against psychological attacks such as those made by mind flayers. I like the weapon specialization of fighters, I tend to go for Grand Mastery in Longbow and 2 handed swords but that's just personal opinion. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

IF I'M CORRECT THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON IN THE GAME IS THE EQUALIZER?
LETS SAY HYPOTHETICALLY I GET FULL SLOTS IN SINGLE WEAPON, TWO HANDED SWORD USAGE HOW MUCH DAMAGE WOULD A CRITICAL HIT DO TO SOMEONE WITH AN ARMOUR CLASS OF 10 WITH A LOT OF LIFE? P.S I WAS THINKING OF GRAND MASTERY WITH FLAIL AND USING FLAIL OF THE AGES. |
Nahh... Thieves are the best class !
If you want to do severe damage, try a backstab with Celestial Fury. I have achieved damage of over 200 points in a single strike. Consider using alternatives to swords as a good weapon - 3D4 will beat 1D10 - plain old darts can overpower even a 2 handed blade. The monk can kill a Dragon with a single blow. It's called quivering palm. Also, they get absolute immunity to poison at a certain level AND an increased magic resistance at certain level(s). They get increased movement rates and their bare hands hit like magic weapons. Basically, THEY KICK BUTT!! As far as if they're better than fighters, that is a VERY difficult comparison. Fighters rely on equipment a LOT more than monks. Both are VERY good, but if you are relatively new, I suggest the fighter.
As far as proficiencies, I suggest sword and shield style for a MUCH better AC, OR two-weapon style for more attacks as well as the fact that with two diff. magic weapons, you could be more devastating (each weapon could have diff. magical abilities and/or do diff. types of damage). I prefer using two of the same type weapon (two katanas, two long swords, etc). But a lot of people like using a slashing or piercing weapon in 1 hand and a blunt weapon in the other. (although I can't figure out why a REAL character would do this) ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memn...ges/drizzt.gif Let's get'em guen! Quote:

I JUST BASICALLY NEED TO KNOW WHICH ONE, IM ROLLING STATS NOW!!!
I DUNNO MAYBE BE A THIEF WHO KNOWS??, WHAT WOULD U CHOOSE, THIEF OR FIGHTER. I THINK THE FACT A THIEF CAN WIELD SWORDS AND CAN WEAR ARMOUR MEANS HE IS REALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO MAGICAL BENEFITS. I JUST CAN'T CHOOOSEE HELP SOMEONE,HELP!!! |
I go for monk. Just from reading some of the other posts monks get a hole lot better as they get more experience. From memory there magic resistance gets to about 70%, there fists become +4 weapons etc.
------------------ http://members.aol.com/lasttrueprinc...es/chdrag4.gif Know thy enemy and know thyself and you will never be defeated in a hundred battles. |
OK I'M AFRAID I HAVE CHOSEN TO BE A FIGHTER. MONKS MAY BECOME V.POWERFUL, BUT I CAN'T RESIST THE MAGICAL QUALITIES A FIGHTER CAN AQUIRE THROUGH EQUIPMENT.
HERE ARE MY STATS: SHOULD I REROLL, CHANGE THEM AT ALL? STRENGTH: 19 DEXTERITY: 18 CONSTITUTION:19 WISDOM:3 INTELLIGENCE:3 CHARISMA:18 HE IS A LOVELY HALF ORC [This message has been edited by IntrospectiveIdeals (edited 07-15-2001).] |
firstly, TAKE OFF CAPS LOCK PLEASE!
okay, heres my actual message. Monks are pretty much cheap-o power gamers that severely unbalance the game.those stats look pretty good, but if ur gonna be in melee ur gonna need a higher INT than CHA cuz Illithids drain INT... just give Aerie the Nymph's cloak (bought from Mae'Var's guildhall) and the Ring of Human Influence for shopping and crap like that (which is all u need CHA for) ------------------ Proud member of the HADB. And remember, when you're thinking of giant heads, why not think of the Big Giant Head? |
I'VE JUST MADE MY CHARACTER, WHAT DOES THE RING OF HUMAN INFLUENCE DO?
RAISED INTELLIGENCE TO 10 I HOPE THAT SHOULD DO. I HAVE GOT 6 PROFICIENCY SLOTS SHOULD I PUT 3 ON FLAIL AND 3 ON SWORD AND SHIELD STYLE, THE FLAIL SLOTS BEING FOR THE FLAIL OF AGES. |
Personally, I never give any fighter-type more than normal specialization (2 slots) in any weapon; given a fighter's good thaco, the ability to use great weapons, the bonuses from strength and the specialization, etc. they never have any problem running foes through the quisinart.
Then again, it's your character. What do you think you should do? ------------------ An intelligent mind is the key to the universe. The most distressing thing about practicing magic is the fact that even the most learned sorcerers cannot accurately describe what magic *is*.... |

Totally agree, I use thieves pretty much exclusively, sometimes multi-classed fighter thieves for the THAC0 and proficiency bonuses. Never done 200 damage with one, I think 154 is my biggest damage, but yes I agree, I think the thief class is the single most involving class of all. ------------------ It's bleedin dark down here, slippery too. http://www.contrabandent.com/pez/cwm/cwm/piss2.gif Man, that's a pisser. http://www.3dpcgames.com/cwm/s/cwm/cwm/piss.gif |
I know that you have already chosen a fighter, and let me tell you that i LOVE fighters. Especially the Beserker. BUT, my favorite class in the game is a monk. they are absolutely fantastic in later levels. Just for fun, I did the following:
Gave a level 16 Keldorn the holy avenger, dragon scale armor, helmet of balduron, the girdle that makes your strength 19 (hill giant?), and gave him two more proficiancies in two handed weapon style. so he ended up with a THAC0 of about 1, and a AC of about -5 or so. HE also had around 120 Hp's or so. Oh and i also hasted him too. I then Created a monk. Level 16 as well. gave him the gauntlets that mak your strength 18/00 and he had an AC of between (sorry dont remember this one exactly) -4 and -6. His THAC0 ended up being about 1 or 2. I then just squared them off. it was no contest, the monk destroyed the heavily armored, holy avenger wielding, hasted paladin. I LOVE keldorn! I'm not trying to knock him here, because he has some other GREAT uses. As well, I know that he is not a fighter, but he WAS wielding a wonderful weapon that fighters cannot get. My point is that this monk has had no problem pretty much defeating anything. He has a wonderful NATURAL magic resistance, is super fast, has a great amount of attacks per round, and (i love this one) I killed Firekragg (or however you spell that nasty red dragon's name) with ONE hit. monks are a blast to play, and i would chose one to play over a fighter anyday. and that is my humble opinion. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif |
flail of ages? damn......... is it worth building your char around that POS? just MHO, ive always had the mindset that a big half orc fighter should have a 2H sword, and leave the flails to the clerics http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
|
First off monks are real cool. If you intend to solo or pair with 1 other char you might find that hard at first though.
As for weapon choices I would discourage spending alot of points into flail. Flail of the ages is fantastic since you can get it so early but I wouldn't build a character around it. There is a huge selection of 2h swords and longswords (or you could build a char around the celestial fury. harder to get but better than the flail by a longshot). If you are looking to do alot solo I think a pure fighter is gunna have a little bit of difficulty. Fighters are much better when they got support. That really allows them to do what they do best and not worry about the rest. There are so many spell casters in this game that cast stoneskin and mantle and such. That could prove a big problem with a solo fighter. Heh and I gotta agree with whoever else asked about the caps. Thats considered shouting online dude. Take a deep breath, relax and turn of the caps hehe. |
Just one thing. If you want to lay hits on an opponent, then a fighter is the best. I just want to give you an example. I have a Drow (basically an Elf, I have only changed the saves down by 2) He is lvl 4 (in BG1) and has a THAC0 of 7. He doesn't have that awesome 200 damage like the 'Amazing Thief', but he plants blows and leaves marks. 30 damage for critical. It basically depends on the weapon your character is using. That's about all, I'll update you when I reach BG2.

DeathKnight's first sentance is right on the money.
also: Monks are awsome higher in level. Fighter dualed to an Assasin (using shadowkeeper by placing subclass as assasin while a fighter and then dualing) using katana's has the most devistating hit potential (above 200 w/ a good girdle - if you can backstab it, it will die). The Flail of Ages is a great 2nd hand wepon (on a dual wepon basis) to slow the creature your attacking (as well as other reasons). Longswords are prob. the most verstital wepon class (there are lots of good ones), though it would seem very odd to weild a true flail and sword (best to think of it as a sword breaker). For pure hack-n-slash nothing beats an axe (my choice for your fighter). You also get a very nice axe when you get the flail - combine this with an axe (Stonefire) purchased in the Copper C. and make your fighter GOOD so you can use Azuredge (you will never have to worry about missle wepons w/ it and you will never have to worry about the undead w/ it), also purchased in the CC. BTW, their is an awesome axe in TOB so you won't w/ something shiney and new when you play it. and finally...... The extra bonus in strength can be easily aquired w/ a good girdle, but the extra constitution is nice. If you are going pure class half-orc then I would go w/ a barbarian (this & dwarf are the best way to have max hitpoints), however Rangers also have excellent hitpoints and extra prof. points (for dual-wield) as well as some nice spells (healing and insect spell higher in level) Stalkers in paticular have backstab as well + some extra mage spells. Be sure to purchase greater healing potions whenever you can, you'll need em'. |
Even in the table top game, monks were too powerful. They should have been left out of this game. I would choose a fighter anyday of the week just because of my bias towards the monk class.
I am personally a fan of the flail of the ages and heard it got a nice upgrade in TOB. I wouldn't dump all my points into the flail profiency just for that though. A few other awesome weapons are the Warblade(twohanded sword 1d12+4), Celestial Fury(Katana 1d10+3 with a couple of abilities), Frost Reaver, Azure Edge and Stonefire(All axes and nice for killing undead and trolls), Daystar(Sunray against undead? *drools*), Impaler(Spear, 1d8+3, +10 piercing dmg) or even the Hammer of Thunderbolts(no need to waste the girdle and gauntlets, 2d4+3..5-11 plus strength(14-20 with the big girdle I believe)..is still a nice chunk of damage. Heck, even some of the short swords and daggers are awesome too, not to mention the staves if you choose to be a fighter/mage. |
Monks are indeed perhaps too powerful. But still fun to play! I'm currently playing a level 20 monk equipped with 3 critical items: Girdle of Fire (Frost? forget which one...) Giant Str, Cloak of Mirroring, and Ring of Free Action. Since the hands do 1-20 dmg per hit and she attacks 7/2, in the first round I typically average (and almost never miss) 80 - 100 damage. Get a few critical hits in and it's 120+. My monk would happily take on a berserk fighter any day, though a good backstab would probably take her out. 2 - 3 rounds and the monk can tear through high level Stoneskin no problem - it's the pesky immunity to magical weapons that renders her temporarily useless.
As an example of what the monk equipped above can do: took out a lair of beholders (underdark) all by herself with maybe 2 healing potions and no reloads. And while a fighter with that cloak kicks arse as well, the monk's natural resistances and additional attacks per round put the monk over the top. |
MONKS
The monk can make one unarmed attack per round; he gains one-half additional attack every 3 levels. As the monk increases in levels, the damage his fists inflict does as well: - Level 1-2: 1-6 - Level 3-5: 1-8 - Level 6-8: 1-10 - Level 9-14: 1-12 - Level 15+: 1-20 - A monk's natural armor class gets better as he goes up in levels. His armor class starts off at 9, and then decreases by 1 for every 2 levels. - Stunning blow, once per day for every 4 levels. All attacks in the next 6 seconds force the victim to save or be stunned. Note: This special ability automatically modifies a monk's normal attack, no targeting needs to be done. - Monks have the Deflect Missiles ability. This gives them a -1 to their AC vs missiles for every 3 levels. - The monk gains a +2 to save vs. spells. - A monk starts off moving at +2 move, then +1 move every 5 levels. - 5th level: Immunity to all diseases, and cannot be Slowed or Hasted. - 7th level: Lay on Hands to heal 2 hit points per level. - 8th level: -1 to speed factor. - 9th level: +1 to all saves. Immune to charm. The monk's fist is considered a +1 weapon (+2 at 12th, +3 at 15th). - 11th level: Immune to poison. - 12th level: Another -1 to speed factor. - 13th level: Quivering Palm spell once per day. This spell gives them one hand attack. If they hit an opponent, the opponent must save or die. - 14th level: The monk gains 3% magic resistance per level (ie. 42% at 14th level). - 20th level: Immune to non-magical weapons. ------------------ It's bleedin dark down here, slippery too. http://www.contrabandent.com/pez/cwm/cwm/piss2.gif Man, that's a pisser. http://www.3dpcgames.com/cwm/s/cwm/cwm/piss.gif |
Ok guys I will update you, the half orc fighter is made, and there are some slight statistic adjustments.
str - 19 dex - 18 const- 19 wisd - 5 intel - 8 char - 18 I think thats pretty good, now I played up to chapter 3 with a monk, and I have to say it was boring, lets just say you cannot experiment as much with a monk. I think the fighter has the edge because the problem with the monk is, you get resistance to his weapons and hes screwed. At the moment my fighter is level 10, roughly 100 hp, he's screwing up anyone in his way, and he has great saves. Get this no archer can touch him, he has -14!!! against missile weapons. He's got the Namara sword which is a +2 long sword he's pushing around 20-30 damage and 40 on criticals. He also hits very consistently. As for my proficiencies I got maximum for sword and shield style, and grand mastery in long sword, are there some really good long swords I could get? Don't tell me where they are, NO SPOILERS PLZ! |
I don't think you need such a high charisma. You can just use the ring of human influence. My favourite longswords are the Equalizer and the sword of Balduran. The best is Blackrazor, but you only get it at the end of the game.
------------------ You cannot escape the inevitable. |
The worlds most likeable Half-Orc no doubt.......if not one of the worlds dumbest. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif
