I want to discuss just how good some of these weapons are. These are not often used and hardly ever mentioned... but should be really good!
1/ Impaler+3 Spear: does +10 piercing damage! Beat that 2/ Jhor the bleader+2 Bastard Sword: I call it mage killer. It poisons them without save on hit. Well it actually causes bleeding but the battle dialogue treats it as poison. You don't have to immediately worry when the mage activates it's protections as the poison well disrup most BIG spells. 3/ On a separate issue, the Daystar is supposed to be +4 vs undead, so why can't it hit the Demi-Lich?? 4/ Pickie Prick, another good weapon that makes the victim unconcious unless save vs spell. Ideal for fighter mages. 5/ Dragonslayer, hmmm less impressive but how many items makes you immune to fear permantly? We know how useful that is with all these symbol spells flying around. |
Daystar cant hit the Demilich beacuse its +2 to hit anything, but only has a +4 thac0 and damages bonus to hit undead and evil. not the nesacerry extra castings of "enchant an item. shadowkeeper shows it enchanted as a +2 weapon.

What about the Flail of ages? It may not be the strongest weapon in the game but it can be found nearly at the beginning of the game. So its value for an unexperienced party is...um...invaluable...

Well, I know the Daystar is only enchanted +2, therefore it can't hit the demi-lich, since the demi-lich needs +4 enchanted weapons to hit it.
Flail of ages does have a major advantage in that it automatically slows any opponet it hits. Period. No saving throw, just if it wacks you, your moving and casting and meeling at half your normal speed. That means you will get hit for less, and can beat on that critter for more. I think the main reason people don't like to use it, is that they don't have a character that has developed the flail fighting ability. You develope a character with some good points into flail profeciency, and you have a seriours damage dealer for your party. Also, the elemental damage points will go threw mages stone-skin spells. For a really nice combo, a bezerker/cleric duel-class human, with duel-weld maxed, war hammer and flail/morningstar profs developed, can really put a hurting on things. For spears I like to develope Jaheria with either the Impaler or the Withering spear (that +4 enchantment +4/4 THACO/Dam and +4 posion, and the posion is nasty) or go the staff route. Staff of Striking, Rynn, and Woodlands are some of my favorites for her. Personal favorites are axes and longswords. ------------------ Drink and be merry http://www.tgeweb.com/images/forum/icons/beerchug.gif Jimbo http://www.tgeweb.com/images/forum/icons/ninja1.gif "Renegade, Rebel, and Rogue" |
The Flail of the Ages has to rank in my top 5 favorite weapons due to the easiness in getting it and its various bonuses.
A beefed up version of it( in a sense) is the Dragon's Breath halberd. It gives you the basic FOA damage, plus another point or two. I'm all for axes and long swords too when playing a warrior class(besides some of those goofy ranger kits)...except when playing a paladin. Then its two-handers all the way. |
I used Flail of Ages by Minsc from chapter 2 all game. Brain golems in Mind Flyer dungeon can hit only Minsc with Flail of Ages from my party. Keldorn with Carsomyr can't hit them.

For ranged attacks I would say "Heartseeker +4) from Windspear Hills and an underrated is the Gnasher for Jaheira. Everads sling is also a must. But for entertainment value watching my character hit the Demi-lich with the Staff of Rynn for about two minutes was the best. Watching that little fella get his head (literally) pummeled like that and then laughing as he got morale failure was pure delight. Imagine waking up after a thousand years, thinking you are this ulimate mage machine only to discover that a Gnome with a stick is slowly going to kill you and you don't have any arms so you can't fight back!!

I don't tend to use spears and halberds, as the loss to ac without a shield is horrendous. At what point do you make the change from one handed to two handed weapons. Anyway, the damage they deal is pointless if their so slow. A sword dealing 2d8 +1 at speed 1 will do as much damage as a spear at 1d10 +3 since spears by and large are much slower....
|
oops typo, 1d8 +2
|
Tricky: the Heartseeker is +3 the Mana bow is +4
|
Any idea how long the slow lasts?
I like that dual welded with the Crom Faeyr! Clerics better than fighters http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif |
Frostreaver and Stonefire dual wielded for me. I love dual wielding axes.

any idea on how long the slow lasts on flail of ages?
|
never mind the flail and all that how about the war hammer crom faeyr.... speed factor 1, +5 to hit, and adjusts str. to 25!!!! that's easily the best item in the game.
|
Two good and underrated weapons are daggers:
Firetooth (2D4 plus 3 damage, as well as fire damage ) which is better than most longswords, except that you can throw it repeatedly! *Strength bonuses apply to hurled weapons* Pixie Prick (plus 3) is arguably the best melee dagger in the game, but has such a horrid name. |
Spear of the Impaler is a must have for anyone with Jahiera in their group. Some of the scimitars are not bad, but the Spear really outclasses them. Some of the staffs (especially the staff from the Icewind Dale merchant) are tempting, but once you get to higher levels and can afford the loss of a few bonus spells, the spear will really stand out.
One weapon that I'm really somewhat disappointed in is the Silver Sword. Unlike the vorpal sword from the gold box series, this one just doesn't seem to lop of heads on a regular basis for 'ole Keldorn. He was taking such a beating employing it that I decided that Daystar + Shield was a better option for him. (My main is also a paladin, so Casomyrs isn't an option for Keldorn) |

Pixie prick is found in the Astral prison, Part of Haer D'lis quest, and you can buy Firetooth in the Underdark, from a merchant in the first hall of the Drow city.
For the majority of the game my Archer was duel wielding Celestial fury and Pixie prick and either sleeping or stunning everything in his path. |
Bygones01: I don't think we are talking about weapons like Crom Faeyr as it is common knowledge how great it is! Sorry but duh!
http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif just kidding... this thread aims at bring out the less used but highly efficient weapons. P.S. Firetooth is also in the Crom Faeyr class Impaler and Pixie Prick are more like it! Hey I just found out the Flail of Ages slows at 100% chance! |
P.S. Firetooth is also in the Crom Faeyr class
Hm... how do you figure that? You mean the power? Daggers are probably the least used class of weapons, and at least one poster never heard of it. So, it's most likely not as famous as the fabled Crom Faeyr. You don't have to assemble it from scattered bits all over the place, or even win it by questing - it's just a merchant item, and not even a bonus item at that. |
I love lilarcor! it is obtained early on in the game and minsc really rocks with it, especially if you improve his proficiency with a 2-hand slashing weapon.
i just LOVE that PINK axe you can buy off Hendak in the copper coronet-- i have outright killed many undead just by equipping it to Minsc when we fight undead. It sometimes does about 18 damage to a undead creature but the thing will just DIE! ANd whats nice is that it is range-returned after use too! so you can stand behind summoned pets and never take a hit. I used that axe to pick off those golems in that maze-place in the planar sphere quest- i let the Big golem block the path while i killed off the ones behimd him using that axe and a sling, and never took a hit. I also killed off the Big golem, and then i think just the clay is left to kill- you can't kill those with those kinds of weapons (Blunt only). Theres this sucky-looking mace as well you get off some quest, but it also has a chance of outright killing undead... i give that one to Viconia to use and you dont know how many times she hits something once and the thing is just DEAD! ( like the Vampires in that town near spellhold). Pixie Prick is nice, staff of thunder and lightening is nice. Flail of the ages is cool, but lately anomen has been using that sling (+5, no ammo needed) and just simply turning and blasting any undead that comes in his way. |
i would stick the flail of ages in the "elite" category with fury and faeyr.
one point that was grazed earlier were the ac mods vs weapon types. this is where a flail is superior to any sword. let's say you have a THAC0 of 10 and the bad guy you want to kill has full plate, shield, and 18 dex for an ac of -4. with the flail of ages you're hitting on 11 and automatically slowing him. with, say, fury, you're hitting on... ready?... 15! because full plate is -4 vs slashing weapons. slashing weapons have the most penalties vs armors, making opponents tougher than they really are. blunt have the fewest and the only bonus (+2 vs chain) besides piercing vs leather (+2). for my money, all other factors being semi-equal, i'll take a blunt http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif |
firetooth enters the Crom Faeyr bracket cos its overkill basically....
|
Agree! Overkill...what else does Jaheira use for ranged weapons...eh?
The Sling of Everard is also way overkill with its +5 bullets...ideal for clerics. Jeannada: Pink Axe is called Azuredge...way too powerful! |
I like axes my dual class fighter mage had gm in them and had 3 prof in two weapon style.
Had a crappy armour class but he got hold of Azuredge and stone fire early on and there wasn't much that stayed in his way for too long. I like the flail of ages a lot-like one of the earlier posters I usually have a cleric (fighter) dual class double wield it with crom faeyr for complete carnage. I also really really like the +1 sword of flame early on I know it's rubbish but there's just something about it. The dragon slaying sword is cool too I like to kit out a fighter with that the helmet and the shield-matching outfits are great. |
Don't string me up for mentioning ToB, but the Flail (one of my favorite weapons) is even further upgradable to 5 heads.
I'd flag it up there with Carsomyr and Crom Faeyr... ------------------ "As long as a men has the strength to dream he can redeem himself and fly" - Mojo Nixon |
I hate that flail, I really do. Gimme the Warblade 1D12 +4 all day long. Speed factor of 6. Grand Mastery in 2H swords & 2 points spent in 2H weapon style brings the speed down to 2.
There's so many overrated weapons imho. The Silver sword with a speed of 10. The Vorpal sword, Crom wot For, and some of the non ammo bows too. Tell me, can a non ammo sling or bow dish out as much damage for a single shot as say the Heartseeker with acid arrows? ------------------ It's bleedin dark down here, slippery too. http://www.contrabandent.com/pez/cwm/cwm/piss2.gif Man, that's a pisser. http://www.contrabandent.com/pez/cwm/cwm/piss.gif |
Since we're talking about less widely used weapons, has anyone considered what an awesome backstabbing weapon the Staff of Striking could be? Despite what some say, staves may be used to backstab as long as they may be wielded by a true class thief, and the Staff of Striking does 1d6+9 damage. Admitedly, it uses charges, but all you need to do when they run low is to sell it to a fence and steal it back.
I haven't tried this yet, but I'm going to the next time I run a thief. [This message has been edited by Desuma_Malevois (edited 07-14-2001).] |
Backstab: what can thieves back stab with? Bows?
I tried Tansheron's Bow but it didn't work! I hid in shadows went behind this Ogre: Weisi Attacks Ogre Weisi Leaves Shadows Weisi does 3 damages to Ogre Ogre attacks Weisi Imoen: Cone of Cold Ogre Ogre very quick Dry Freeze Death |
