I am going to replace some of the creatures in SOA, to make it a little more difficult. I am going to use already existing monsters.

So, my question is, which are the most difficult creatures in the game? Excluding unique creatures with dialog.

Beholders?
Mind Flayers?
Iron Golems?
Rune Assassins?
A mage with no Dialog?

What is the most difficult (re-appearing) monster, in the game?

I really can’t use big monsters, like giants, dragons, and ettins, because they would not fit in most places.

I’ve got about a dozen lesser monsters that I am going to replace. These monsters are things like Kobold #1 and #2, Vampire #3, Amnish Soldier, Shadow Thief #2, Helm Knight #1, Salamander, Pirate, Mushroom monster, ect... I did not choose these creatures because they are weakest or worse, but rather, because they are the ones that are used most, from a single file (that I could find). For example, there are 20 different kobolds creature files, in the game. I tried to find the one or two that were used most often. Not all Clay Golems come from a single creature file. This list includes humans, monsters, enemy and neutrals (no friends).

And secondly, which Boss needs to be more difficult? Besides Jon and Bodhi.

If you don’t know the name of the creature or its file, I will need some description of the monster and its location, to locate the exact creature file you are referring to.

Greater Wolfwere is the scarriest! They move with haste and regenerate like heck!

If you have the shield of Balduran beholder might as well not exist.
Mind Flayers especially Ultrithids are deadly.

Elder Orbs. They can cast imprisonment, which is a real pain without a Berserker...

Mind Flayers are definitely the worst. They can use their psionic abilities as often as they wish, drain IQ with each hit, and have reasonably good MR. I beat both the red and black dragons in about 7 rounds each and suffered no losses, but that seems easy to facing 3 illithids.

I suppose I'll just have to create an anti-illithid weapon, yes?

How about an Ulitharid, souped up, that can spawn other Mind flayers? Say one per round as an innate ability?

Wolfweres are to easy sure there hard at lower levels but at abput level 10 (at least for me) they are easy now mind flayers those are some tough B****s.

floyd 07-09-2001 10:28 PM

Those Ulithids are damn hard! That fight against 5 of them and 2-3 umber hulks was very challenging. I don't understand what ability they use to do it, but often I'd send my bulked up fighters in there and they'd take 3 damage from the Ulithid and die instantly. Whats up with that? That was hard until I figured out the 7th level summoned Sword works real nice against them.

Also the 5 Demon Knights from the Kua-Tuo(? Fish men) area in the Underdark are VERY tough, even for my 14-16 level party. They cast many different power words, have magic resistance, have level drain, and are kickass melee fighters. Ranged weapons work nice against them, as does the aforementioned summoned Sword though.

Mind flayers. I'd rather fight 3 dragons at once than fight those sobs. If you want to modify a good monster do it with the mind flayers

For me was mind flyers hard, but only before I try priest spell Chaotic commands on my fighters. With this spell were mind flyers (ulitharids) pretty easy.

Demon knights was hard too.

Top 5 difficult monsters(in my opinion and in no order) All Mindflayers, large groups of demon knights, elder orbs(the ONLY difficult beholder) Balors, and Adamantium golems

joetbd 07-10-2001 03:41 AM

Demon Knights
DEATHKNI.cre

There are 19 different "Balor" monsters, did you have a location in mind?

There are summoned Balors
Jon's Balors
Demon Balors
Under Dark Balors

ecko 07-10-2001 04:44 AM

that gnome village balor ´was though

and those knigts two of my party members died

ecko 07-10-2001 04:51 AM

demi liches

Gustave 07-10-2001 05:09 AM

Gnome one was annoying, but I have no particular ones in mind.

Tricky 07-10-2001 05:48 AM

Have a combo. Like the Mindflayer/Umberhulk. Or Rakshasa and Hakeashar. Imust admit though my first tough fight was the lich at the city gates. Even now that lich has a special place in my heart. Thatlich acts as a good guide as too whether my party is "ready" or not.

DonkeyWan 07-10-2001 07:23 AM

Liches, definitely liches, mindflayers are easy with a priest and haste, whereas Liches usually require cheese tactics and are still nasty. Gauths can be nasty in groups, 'cos there so quick they'll wipe a party in a surprise ambush (unless you have shield and cloak of B & R, in which case they get wiped too easy). Think about combo's of monsters. On their any monster, even in a group can be dealt with, however, flayers beside Umbar hulks, much mre difficult etc.

joetbd 07-10-2001 07:40 AM

UmberHulk Elder
UMHUL02

Mithykyl Mind Flayer
SENILL02

Vampire Mind Flayer
MindVa01

Dwarf Beserkers
Senorc03

Demon Knights
DeathKni

Hive Mother Beholder
Behhiv01

Orgemoth Elemental
Elemogre

I'm not sure, are there lich's without dialog?

Lifetime 07-10-2001 12:37 PM

Tough? I think that if you don't use the Cloak of Mirroring or the Shield of Balduran, Beholders are tough. Drow are hard to crack too, especially in large groups. I'm talking about the real drow warriors and priestesses, the battle groups. Mindflayers I backstabbed easily. I never took a single hit by flayers in clearing both lairs..but I was playing an assassin so maybe that's it.
