I would have responded anyway, never the less onwards get the scroll off the gnomes in the southeast of the map(the ones who told you about him probably) cast and all will become clear itll even go to the part of the mao where he is.

a mage? trapped in the underdark? i believe youre referring to the iron spheres quest in the underdark, not the deep gnome quest to kill the balor, as jabidas answered. you merely have to click on a facet on the sphere for it to appear. just be careful which one you click on: some powerful creatures may come up if you click the wrong one.

There is a mage who was imprisoned in the underdark, has nothing to do with the soul sphere located in another area.
In order to free this mage, you need to get rid of the imprisonment spell on him, and the best way, is to cast a FREEDOM spell. The merchant to the south area happens to sell freedom scrolls. Nuff said.

I cast it about 1 game screen (800 by...) above the Dwarves.

It's about 150yards right of the air elemental portal.
