I've been thinking about buying Baldur's Gate or Baldur's Gate 2 for quite awhile now and I would like some opinions as to how good this game is and what is it about? Is it linear or non-linear? Any feedback welcome. Thanks in advance!

It is a bad game, starts in a boring prison and gets worse. You may enjoy it for the first five min but then it is bad. Dont bother getting it.

My opinion only.

Some idiots? Who are they? I'll tell 'em to go screw off.

Jafin don't listen to him. The game is a really good buy. I played BG1 21 times and BG2 8 times and something different happens everytime.

They are linear, part of a trilogy, BG, BGII, and TOB to be out this summer. Simply put, they are the best RPG games I've everplayed. Money well spent. Hours of enjoyment. Check out the TeamBG website, the have lots of tools etc to enhance these infinity engine games. www.teambg.com

Jafin 06-14-2001 01:34 AM

It's non-linear then? The storyline I mean.

Jafin, do not pay attention to all this little troubles.
As to BG - great games they are indeed. I like BG2 more - for more interactive NPCs and more wider choices of classes and kits, and for some other reasons. Interesting storyline, turn-based combat (if you prefer it). And it's not linear. I would say this is fascinating game.
Btw, glad to see you here http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

It sounds like the game's worth it. I just might go and buy it, but I think I'll wait for some other people to respond first, just to get more opinions. It's based off of AD&D isn't it?

Dubya,

I can understand your frustration, however, this inconvenience is momentary. This is a great forum with great members, with the exception of one obstreperous member who will quickly be removed.

It really is a lot of fun to play. I havn't even made it to chap 3 yet and I've enjoyed the role playing. I would recommend playing through one time though and then visiting the forums. Every time I've visited them I think I learn something new and start a new character. I'll never finish this way.

Hoping my idiot status will not haunt me for too long.

Volourn 06-14-2001 02:11 AM

It is a great game! I find things I missed all the time! And yes, it is based on pnp DnD (2ndE). Not exactly, but the closest you can get from CRPG that I've ever seen. BTW: Before BG1, I used a computer only once or twice, and now I spend a lot of time on it - even use the internet. Heheh!!

P.S. Try playing BG1 first, then BG2. It'll make It Twice as sweet!!!

GO DWARVES GO!

So I should get BG1 AND BG2 then? Sounds like a lot of good gaming fun! I may be coming around on this board now too. How am I going to keep up with 4 boards?! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/crap.gif

Jafin
I can't speak for the original BG and its expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast (TOSC). But I do have BG2 (obviously! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif) and I am enjoying it very much.

BG2 is both linear and non-linear. It is divided into 7 chapters, so in that sense the plot follows a linear path. But within each chapter it is completely non-linear. With a few exceptions, you can choose to do whichever quests you feel like doing, within each chapter, in whatever order you wish.

If you like RPGs in general, you can't go wrong with BG2.

Jafin,

I want to echo the sentiments of the sane members of the forum here, and say that this is the most amazing CRPG I've ever played. I have Wizards and Warriors as well, and I enjoy it; but BGII is so much more involving. The conversations are different each time depending upon who is in your party, and it even has interactive romances! The game play is mildly linear on the main plot, but most of the game can be played at nearly any point. BGII follows 2nd edition AD&D rules, which are different from W&W and are better or worse depending on your point of view.

A warm welcome to this board! You will find many friendly people here who will help you through any challenging problems you may face. Oh, and by the way, Memnoch and Ziroc will have blocked Bagger by the time you read this I expect, so don't worry about unfriendlies over here.

To save all from having to look up a dictionary:

ob·strep·er·ous (b-strpr-s, b-)
adj.
Noisily and stubbornly defiant.
Aggressively boisterous.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[From Latin obstreperus, noisy, from obstrepere, to make a noise against : ob-, against; see ob- + strepere, to make a noise (of imitative origin).]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ob·streper·ous·ly adv.
ob·streper·ous·ness n.
