Help!!

I am trying to do a full install of Bg2 but it keeps asking for a disc 5! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/conf.gif

I seem to recall that someone has had this bug before, and I hope someone has a solution for it....

Also, one of the reasons why I'm reinstalling is this: In my boyfriends game, the game kept freezing whenever he tried to go to the Bridge District to do Jan's Quest... he has been to the Area before, but that bug just kept crashing the game as soon as he traveled to the Bridge district!! Of course the latest patch was installed, and I have no idea what caused this. Does anyone know?

BTW I have three GB of free space available, that's enough for a full install right?

That's enough for an install.

BladeMaster 06-08-2001 05:42 PM

Try and put Disk one back in. Yes 3 gigs enough for a full install

I had a similar problem with IWD. It was a corruption of the disc, I figured the bit that was shot and Ziroc kindly sent me the single file that I required. It sorted the problem in no time. Can you narrow it down to a file name?

Melusine 06-08-2001 05:48 PM

Charlie, no....I have no idea how to do that....
I was installing at 37% when it asked for disc two. When I put it in it immediately asked for disc 3. I put in disc three and it asked for 4, then for 5 http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif I have no idea what went wrong...
Was your IWD problem similar to what I'm describing?

Was your personal game ok at the bridge district and are you playing from the same discs?.........or are you playing using differing discs?

Charlie 06-08-2001 05:53 PM

No sorry love I can't. Those two posts started life as one so I'm not sure what happened there either. My problems weren't on "install" but actually within the game itself. I wonder if it might be better (or possible) to try to correct a loading problem as opposed to an installation one.........if that makes sense. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

What do you mean by different discs? I use only one copy of the game if that's what you're asking...
But anyway the Bridge district thing is not really an acute problem, as I will first need to get the game installed... http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

Does anyone else recognise this problem and/or provide me with a solution

Melusine? Did you ever download special add ons? Maybe that's what it's looking for? I know there was one that had special vendors and items that many people downloaded.

Not much help, am I?! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif Sorry! Hope you work it out! Try un-installing and re-install it?

Cloudy, you are a lot of help actually...because I did DL the bonus-cd files (the ones with the extra merchants).

OK just to clarify... Our harddrive is partitioned into drives C, D, E, F.
We installed the game in D: and Windows is installed on drive C. Then we had to format drive C due to other problems, so the game was lost/deinstalled.
I deleted all the BG2 files from the D drive and am now trying to reinstall it.
I have no idea how the bonus cd thing can be a problem...but maybe someone here knows???

http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif Jabidas I am sure that is not true....everybody on this board tries to help out newbies and I for one always answer newbies' questions when I see they only have a few responses http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif I am not trying to use my nonexistent popularity to get people to help if that's what you're saying!
Anyway thanks for the link, I will try that, but since I seemed to remember someone else asking about this same problem I was hoping someone would be able to help

Now now, new members are NOT ignored! If you see a question going unanswered, bump it up and remind people it's there! There are a lot of new people joining the Ironworks every day and it's hard for anyone to keep up with the pace on this forum, as it is particularly fast to overturn threads.

Just a thought but the game has to qork WITH windows and if it isn´t installed in the same part fo HD that might constitute a problem....but try the official site as some other clever person said to do...They´ll know and otherwise they´ll find out...
The full install is 2538 MB...But remember that you need additional Cache size....I find about 600MB good...but not perfect

Sparhawk, that cannot be a problem as I installed BG2 before (as well as numerous other games) and it works fine

Just a few pointers I found by running a generic search on the board using the parameters 'disk 5'

From RudeDawg:

General CD Install Troubleshooting

If you are having problems getting BG2 to install or BG2 asking for a CD5, you may want to try some of the following suggestions.

When changing CDs during the installation, let the drive spin-up and then stop. Then click OK and see if the installer recognizes the disc change. Do this for all the CDs that are requested.
Try checking for a firmware/BIOS update for your CD or DVD drive. We have had several reports of sucessfull installs of BG2 once a firmware update was applied. You will have to check with your CD/DVD drive manufacturer for this kind of update.
If for whatever reason you are unable to do a Recommended or Full install, but you can do a Minimum install, please read How to "fake" a larger install from a Minimum.
If you have multiple CD/DVD drives, only install from one and do not try to use all of your drives. For some reason, this is confusing InstallShield.
If you cannot do any install without getting some sort of error or crash and you have about 5 Gig of free hard drive space, you can try to copy all 4 CDs to your hard drive, then run the install from there. Please note, you must copy all 4 CDs to the same directory for the install to run. If you get prompted for the next CD, then you have not copied the files over properly, or you have missed some.
Try turning off DMA for your CD/DVD drive. For some people, this has allowed them to install. You can find this checkbox by going to your Control Panel, then to System, then to the Device Manager tab. Find your CD/DVD drive and bring up its Properties, then go to the Settings tab.
Try turning off your CD/DVD read-ahead. For some people, this has allowed them to install. You can find this slider by going to your Control Panel, then to System, then to the Performance tab. Down in the Advanced Settings frame, press the File System... button and move the slider all the way to the left. You may need to restart for this setting to take effect.

From TheDuKatanor:

Uninstall the game, delete the Black Isle folder completely, run a scan of the registry if you can (I recommend Norton for this - Tancred) and then restart and install. It worked for me.

From Aurican:

He recommended changing the designation of your disk drives in the autoexec.bat.

Other suggestions include putting in disk 1 or even 2.

Try searching through the board like I did if any of these fail.

Tancred

I'd just like to say, I take no credit in this post whatsoever... let he who had the right suggestion claim the dragon's head and the hand of the damsel. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I'm not exactly sure, Mel, but I remember WAAAAAY back in antiquity someplace http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif that it was mentioned as a problem by someone doing a re-install. Wish my memory was a little more all-inclusive, but I just don't recall the solution, other than to re-install the dl files for the bonus stuff.

Sorry Melusine, we may be at crossed wires. I was asking if both yourself and your b/f were playing using the same discs at the same PC. You say that the bridge district is not an "acute" problem, yet upon reading your post it seems that you are re-installing purely to overcome this problem. Were it not for this "roblem" would you be re-installing at all?

Don't worry about it. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

robertthebard 06-08-2001 09:02 PM

We encountered this problem before, and what we did was to simply restart the computer and refresh the RAM, it then installed just like it was supposed to. I got that from this board as well, and it worked. If you haven't uninstalled, you may try that as well, then restart your computer and install. Not much, but it worked for us. Also, it has nothing to do with the bonus shop keepers, or the collector's edition discs, as I have the bonus disc, and the shop keepers, and I haven't had any problems re-installing, after I crashed my hard drive.

when i first got bg2 i tried doing the basic install on my old computer that only had about 1 gig of free space on it. it asked for disk 5 just like with you and i spent an entire night searching the box/my room/under my desk for disk 5. i correctly assumed later that this was a bug and attributed it to a lack of space problem. so...

might be a problem with the partitions. i run three hard drives daisy-chained with games on a 20 gb one (secondary drive, not the startup/windows one) and it installed normally on that.

lastly, i remember there being a problem with the uninstaller. don't recall the details but i do know i had to go into my registry and manually remove all the bg2 stuff. let me know if you need help with this if you try it.

-

regarding the getting-to-the-bridge-district problem... are you playing a cheat-free game? many times if an item or spell or script is hax0red it will occassionally crash the game for apparently no reason. once, i used to shadowkeeper to give imoen a spell (lamely forgot to bring the scroll case i had kept for her); i wound up assigning her the wrong one (an "INxxxx" spell instead of a "WIxxxx" one) and the game would crash whenever i tried to rest. if so, copy the save and relegitimize it. if not, try dropping jan and see if you can get there without him. if you can something is wrong with his script more than likely and someone could use InfinityExplorer to give you a clean one to stick in your override.

good luck
