Powergamer - one who derives game enjoyment by maximizing power in the game. Seeks to have the highest possible stats, best equipment, most hardcore buffs. Seeks to be invulnerable, untouchable, a god. Can wipe the floor with Firkraag and Kangaxx. Mindflayers and beholders are only temporal obstacles as he hacks/slashes/casts spells/bludgeons his way through the game.
Roleplayer - one who thinks that the fun of the game is in roleplaying a favored character from PnP D&D. Will equip his character based on how he feels his character "should" look like. This may be an elven ranger who refuses to use Crom Faeyr or wear anything other than studded leather, because that's how he wishes to roleplay his character, even though this means that it may take him 30 reloads to kill Firkraag. Illithids and eye tyrants may evoke real fear in these characters as they refuse to use "cheezy" solutions and game-unbalancing items like Cloak of Cheating. Keep in mind that the above are two styles of play and one is NOT better than the other. It's your game, enjoy it how you will. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif I'm curious as to which one are you though? Ubergod or cheap hero? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif ------------------ http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/genwalk.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/memname.gif |
I am a Roleplayer, my wife is much more a Powergamer. This leads to difficulties when we both try to run a group...
I have an image of the character in my mind and try to make the game character behave as my imagined character would. My wife wants the best goodies and $$$ and hates to lose Rep even when playing an evil character. ------------------ Evil around every corner. Be careful not to step in it! Sherpa Doug |
I'm a combination of both. I choose my party members and equipment based on how I think my character would behave and play their personality. I have a good aligned character so I never steal. I also don't use any cheesy tactics to win like cloud kill at creatures that can't see you. But I also try to get all the best items and make as powerful a character as I can. But then I tend to let them do most of the work and see whether they can kill the powerful creatures.

I am a roleplayer, but there is a little powergamer always sneaking out. I will roleplay a character but I will Max out were posible (Then again I will do that in PnP games). I will play as he would act and not always choose the best options. I will try to win battles without cheating, but if I can't I will use cheese tatics to win a battle.

I'm definately a roleplayer. Not just because I think about what my character should look like, but also because I'd feel bad if I would have finished the game using cheats (especially the first time). In my experience maximizing you stats and such things almost always upsets the game balance, which I think is a pity. If people want to powergame then that's fine, but I'm a roleplayerhttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I'm probebly half and half. I don't beef up my stats with cheats, but I have a tendancy to give all the best stuff to my main character. But then again, who dosen't!
E.G If your a paladin you don't give Keldorn the holy avenger! (Which in my opinion is too easy to get) I'm really looking forward to testing my mettle on the improved A.I Cheating's boring and ruins the game, You should only use it for a laugh. The whole point of the game is that it should be challenging! Oh yeah Memnoch! I don't consider the cloak of mirroring cheating, Its placed in the game as an item. Why should it be classed as 'cheating'? [This message has been edited by Shadowblade (edited 06-04-2001).] |
definite role player to the max. My PnP charachter has a real thing against genies toohttp://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

I guess that I´m a cheater...I mean I just beafed my stats to 18 all over...but I wouldn´t cheat with anything else in the game...it is sort of holy to me...Even though I might get temted if I don´t wup Firekrags butt soon.

I am a bit of both, I don't cheat, but I choose the best weapons, not what looks the coolest, except when I have two armors that give -1 AC and one is cooler than the other.
In PnP, I am pure Roleplayer. |

I was a roleplayer the first time i completed the game...now i play it to make KICK ASS chars...hehe!
|
Definitely a roleplayer, I make sure my characters always have decent stats (e.g 18 WIS for a priest) but also try and give them stats like CHR,INT and WIS that fit their character and personality even when they aren't necessary for their class, and I choose weapons proficiencies that fit the character (rather than specialising everyone in longswords, axes and bows!) In dialogues I always try and think of what reply my character would give.
The only occasion I really "powergamed" and behaved in a way that didn't fit my character was to choose the evil path in the Trademeet subquest with the feuding families, I HAD to have that Elven Chainmail! |
Roleplayer. Although I will not hesitate to equip my char
with the best stuff I can find. I enjoy the challenge. The only time I got really stuck was in the De'Arnise stronghold. I admit I used the cloudkill tactic after about 10 failures but I never lowered the difficulty level to breeze by any opponent. I tried cheating with shadowkeeper and it gets boring fast. ------------------ "Make way Villiany, Hero Coming through !" |
A little bit of both guess... of course I use the better items I get but I don't use items like ring of regeneration, cloak of mirroring and boots of speed they make the game to easy (anylonger) http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif... I usually play a paladin... and I equip him with the avenger a great armor a cloack of protection and I'm satisfied

The problem with BG2 is that u are all really powergamers. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif
Having played BG1 i found that the high starting levels and the abundence of amazing weapons and Magics available right at the start was making my game too easy. I am RPG all the way and much prefer a characterful romp to a simple slaying. I don't mind having my party thrown about because the whole point is to anticipate trouble before it starts,"HeHeHe that small guys toast!"http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif"Wait not a metor storm!!!!!"(This is what happenes to powergamers!!! i have known!!) |

Definition of a Kensai (Sword Specialist) Powergamer:uses Crom Faeyr.
Definition of a Kensai (Sword Specialist) Roleplayer:uses SWORDS. I am definitely a role-player as my character has a dex of 14 which just misses giving him an ac bonus ( now 15 due to tome from bg1 - not considered cheating unless you use more than 1-like 3 tomes of wis on one character). I also don't allow stealing in my lawful good led party. |
Hmm... This question begs the point a little methinks. How can you "roleplay" truly if there are no other human players?
You might try to do difficult deeds like soloing with an assassin that only uses daggers, but that isn't actually roleplaying so much as it is an exercise in tactics. When NWN comes out, then we shall see truer roleplaying - people actually pretending to be someone else. When I play BG2, it's not really possible to suspend the disbelief. It's just a game, albeit a good one, that focuses on small squad warfare. |
Does anyone know if NWN is going to be another damn Pay-Per-Play online game?

Dont get me wrong, I love the whole BG saga (and its nowhere near as terrible as Diablo 2, thats all just about hach, hack, hack...got very boring, very fast), but in terms of roleplaying your character there are limits. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif. That said, I usually role play as much as I can in BG2. No stealing, usually take the chaotic good option, and no killing the good guys-though I was keen on a tangle with Drizt http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif.Heh I will do that 2nd(complete) time around though, with my evil character. |
It depends...
On PnP both. I like roleplaying, but I always try to maximize him. (But not for kill. I usually play thiefs and like him with big stealing, climbing, hiding stats - note that I play GURPS and i LOVE the maximize my char in this system - i have a couple o tricks) Computer games: i run much more like Overpower. I like to survive. I just cant role a char in PC. It's diferent. Even though BGII gives u lots os choices it isn't a PnP game. |
I am both. When I have beaten the game several times just rollplaying I then go for the powergammer to just have some fun.

well, im both. i dont really think rp as in RP. get it? im like yeah, get aerie, and whoever for fun. and stuff... and edwin for power. korgan too, but this time i refuse to http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I guess I lean more towards powergaming, but I try to role-play as much as I can. It's all from the Diablo background http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
I use all the tools that I'm given (no sense in wasting time and effort to get Crom Faeyr if you are'nt going to use it), but I don't do things like say.. create a fighter with a max prof in Warhammers and dual wielding just to Dual Wield Crom Faeyr and Celestial Fury or something. I tailor my group to the circumstances. I might spend an hour rolling up stats, but that's just to get the best out of my character http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/tongue.gif Playing an Evil-Party really gets the role-playing aspect going I think. The first time around everyone wants to get the powertools and the best parties with the good guys. The second time around, playing an evil assassin really gets you "in-character". Like that quest for Edwin where he tells you to aquire papers for him. Being the evil guy that I was, I had an option to say "ooh look there's a fly on you're neck (quickly and silently break his neck)" Needless to say, I took it, even though my orders were to do it without bloodshed. Nifty! ------------------ Why? [This message has been edited by Lifetime (edited 06-05-2001).] |
Neither - I'm just an explorer. (and an obsessive compulsive one at that.) I like to explore every nook and cranny of the game world, and to try every possibility. I end up with a lot of junk, so you could say I'm a powergamer - but I don't actually use it. Heck, I don't think I've ever even used any of those wands that are cluttering up my inventory except once to test the "cloudkill from out of sight" cheese tactic I heard about on this site. Kind of dissappointing, actually. I prefer to invent my own cheesy (read "wierd") tactics.
Needless to say, my method is time consuming and leads to a lot of reloads, but I have fun with it. ------------------ Philosophically, I'm chaotic evil. In practice, well.... (Dang conscience!) |
Powergamer but not a cheese monster http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Also a Roleplayer with bit of powergamer trying to break out.
In my first time through, I never asembled Crom Fyer, I sold Celestial Fury, I kept Minsc rather than Keldorn because of Ranger solidarity and I wielded Dragonslayer and Namarra (later the Equalizer when more powerful weapons are available, Minsc used Sarevok's sword until Ch6, I fretted about putting innocents in danger when I fought a Gith war party in Waukeen’s Promenade, I used the Staff of the Magi all of once and I gave the “cloak of cheating” to Aerie rather than using it on my Ranger. That was "prevention of reloads due to Aerie getting killed yet again", or PORDTAGKYA for short. I also always assemble my groups to maximize NPC interactions. Aerie and Korgan/Minsc/Hear’ Dalis, Minsc and Aerie/Edwin, Keldorn and Edwin/Viconia/Anomen, etc. and my first group kept Jaheira, Minsc and Imoen because they were with me in BG1. I always max the main stat for whatever class I am using, I give out magic items in such a way as to maximize the effectiveness of my party and you will pry the Ring of Gaxx out of my cold, dead fingers. BGII lends itself to powergaming with its wide array of overpowered items. One or two such items spiced up a game, but this is ridiculous. In PnP, I usually have to run away. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif |
id like to say i was a RPer, but id be lying if i didnt say i wasnt tempted toward powergaming. every time i play a mage or a thief, i almost always get some elven chain. i try to RP, but thats usually w/ fighters that can use everything (if not its in red). the only diff is in my ranger that will only use bows and swords. well, since ive already said a few lines, i suppose its time for me to shut up now too.
|
Definative sign of a powergamer with a guilty conscience: Not using Keldorn when you have the Holy Avenger, but refusing to sell it "just in case"
------------------ Why? |
Well, since you asked...
I would probably fall into the powergamer category in your eyes. I like to make my character strong, and I don't mind using Shadowkeeper. I don't max all my stats, but my prime requisite(s) sure get up there (I am a half-god, by the way). I like strong weapons and armor, but if I gave myself all the best, why would I bother looking for any other? And if I wouldn't have dualed Imoen at level 7 and distributed her thieving skills that way in BGI, why should I suffer the designers role-playing over my own? Like the others have mentioned, CRPGs offer little in the way of complex interaction like the "P&P" style games, so I get my kicks where I can. My characters act their alignments, use appropriate weapons, and advance just as I would roleplay. Otherwise, I love cheating! |
OKI, the booring answer for me, both actually.. I like both styles and after I had made it through the first time, I wanted to have a power-dude that could laugh kangaxx in the face (more like a stupid character! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif ) But well, I was looking for the bets solutions and equipment. After that I tried a bard and made it through with the best things for a bard, which is very different for fighters etc..
So, I like to go both ways really.. ------------------ http://wolfgir.najk.net/wolfie.gif Yawning lazywolf dreaming about nice little fairies...zzzzz |
A bit of both.
Never give ridculous stats to characters....obey D&D rules. BUT MUST HAVE ALL COOL ITEMS...even if I can't use them. I modify NPC's but never give them highier than normal stats..just twicnkle them to my tastes. |
