I am trying to complete the Beholder lair in the underdark as part of the Drow quests, and to get part of the equalizer, and the beholders are crushing me and my party. I read that the Cloak of Reflection was supposed to protect you from them but my prime fighter has it on along with 60% magic resistance, boots of speed, Chaotic command, def harmony, and a -11 AC and he still gets waisted by some of the beholders one shot spells. Does the cloak work or not ? Anyone have a decent stratagey against them ?

SwordBaron 05-21-2001 08:14 AM

possible spoiler here....try sending in some monsters you summon and then hit them with range weapons, that way the monsters keep them busy while you hit them from afar

Yeah, a pack of beholder fodder. Send as many conjured creatures in as you can. Draw them out one at a time. Very hard battle, but very much worth your time. Good luck!

The Cloak of Mirroring always worked for me with beholders as long as my fighter didn't get the spell imprisonment cast on him. I never used Chaotic Command in this situation...maybe it is interfering with the cloak of mirroring...? Can you see that the beholders are being 'flashed' back by the mirror action? They turn a whitish flashing color. Otherwise, unless your level is just really low...but you have come this far so it can't be too low.

Imprisonment? Only Kangaxx does that!?
Use Balduran shield!!!!!
Reflects back all Beholder rays! All Magic works on, them pretend it's a high level mage fight. Open up with some nice area spells!!!

Shrylia 05-21-2001 08:52 AM

Elder Orbs have tried imprisonment a couple of times on Minsc! AND Balduron's Shield is only available if you have the expansion (?) or special something or other. The Cloak will do the job if you don't have the Shield. Really!

I've never been imprisoned by ANY type of beholder, but someone besides Kangaxx who casts imprison is one of the guys in the Soul Gem in the Underdark, you know, the big multifaceted thingy.

Throntar 05-21-2001 09:04 AM

There are two "reflective" cloaks in the game. Cloak of Reflection protects the wearer from 100% of electrical damage only. Cloak of Mirroring protects the wearer from spells (except Imprisonment and Maze).

Elder Orbs can cast Imprisonment. If you haven't been Imprisoned by one throughout the whole game, you have been exceptionally lucky... http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Now where did I leave that doughnut?!

alxander1 05-21-2001 09:54 AM

The summoning monsters strategy sounds good, but when you first go down the stairs to enter the lair, your whole party hast to go down together. It is that first battle versus the two Beholders in that first room that causes me so much trouble.

I thought I had the right cloak, where do you find the cloak of mirroring ?

Spoiler

If I remember rightly, you have to do the Underark to get the cloak of mirroring. Try going invisible before you go down. Sometimes works (sometimes, sadly doesn't.) Alternatively, mass haste and as soon as you arrive, run away... not brave I know, but at least allows you to get off some summon monsters and area spells. Your big problem ai the death spell beholders cast (which no amount of magic shielding will save you against at the lower levels, as far as I can see.)Your best bet is haste, (summon creatures if you get the chance), and ranged weapons + miscast/insect attack. The big problem with beholders is getting your party too close to their deathspell attacks, this is what arrowfodder are for.... Don't underestimate the power of running away and turning raound and hitting that mother with loads of ranged attack when it follows, the big thing I found was hitting it before it had a chance to cast its rather nasty armoury of spells, their not that tough really.

dimon37 05-21-2001 10:17 AM

IF you are in the underdark and not have to cloak of mirroring - you are not getting it legitimatly, you can only get it in Sahuagin City.

Shrylia 05-21-2001 10:23 AM

If you haven't been imprisoned by an elder orb...well, you haven't lived!

Redblueflare 05-21-2001 10:45 AM

Yes the cloak of mirroring is in the Saughin city, and yes it reflects all beholder spells except imprisonment, paralyze, and horror. The easiest way to deal with an elder orb is to give a fighter a long bow, boots of speed, the cloak of mirroring and shoot it down. Just don't let the elder orb get in melee range or you're dead. Dang imprisonment!

I just HATE those steenking beholder orbs...

Ok, here is a couple tricks that can help with them- based on many reloads.

**They can't fight what they can't see. True! If you go in invisible, they will not attack. Thusly, sending in Invisible Stalkers is very useful indeed.

**You cannot backstab them, as, being big beachball shaped organisms, they er, don't seem to have backs. Still, a thief can sneak up and get in a free shot.

**You can poison them, and it can interrupt spellcasting.

**As with any mage, Insect Swarm spells seem to help a lot.
