Coffee anyone?

For their MR use "Lower Magic Resistance", I used to use Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, MR is useless against it, if you plan on using some of your fighters to kill them watch out for their Mind Eat ability.

Tom 05-17-2001 09:14 PM

I dont have MR lowering.

When fighting, I can only take one down!

I consider them the tuffest monster.

Try Magic Missile then, unless they have 100% magic resistance it will almost certainly hit them as there are 5 tries if you are high enough level, also use MM for spell where you make illusionary copies of yourself(Forgot the name) as it removes more than one copy.

Illithids are SO easy, and not in the cheese way either. There is a 6th level cleric spell called chaotic commands that protects you from mind intrusions including illithid attacks. Chaotic commands makes you VIRTUALLY IMMUNE to their attacks. They are weak in combat, I have literally cast this spell on ONE fighter and cleared out rooms of them. Just leave anyone without it back and move anyone protected by it into the frey, they don't stand a chance.

The only problem with this is that Mind Flayers also drain intelligence. If your fighter has a low int score (Which they usually do...), this can be a real problem. Keep an eye on your intelligence. Every hit drains a few points. If they drain you to zero, you die.

I found the best strategy is to cast Haste, Bless, Prot from Evil, Chaotic Commands, then lead them in one by one. With 3-4 hasted fighters you should make short work of them. (Even the Ultra-Illithids)

You can also use the shield that protects you from mind domination, the one that you get in Trademeet. Put it in your strongest fighter and send him to the front.

Invisible Stalkers and Mordenkainen's Sword work really good against them too, both are immune to their stun/intelligence drain attacks.

caleb 05-17-2001 11:38 PM

Whatever you do dont send elementals against them. They drop like a whores panties.

The thing to watch out for, after guarding for domination, is for their intelligence drains. Basically their tentacles wrap around your head and they eat your brain. YUMMY! Anywho, best bet is to summon some fodder to draw them into a volley of missile attacks or strong melee attacks. If possible you can get around their magic resistance by using Death Fog or Cloudkill (in in confined spaces).

Xod, I agree with you!!!!
One invisible stalker can beat 3 or 4 of those Ultra Illithids! and they last 9 hours! I can summon loads of these without resting.

you dont want to use Lower Magic Resistance. It only lowers magic resistance by 1%. what you want to use is the cleric spell, i think it is, called Magic resistance. this lowers any creature/human magic resistance to 20% next try lower resistance but thats pretty much a waste of time. might as well hack em up at that point. It works very well on Firkraag and many other so-called tough guys.

i sorta stumbled into something the other night -
(in the underdark mindflayer section)
this works great w/ keldorn (but should work for any char w/ good saving throws)

lock the rest of your party in a room,
except for keldorn w/ boots of speed, a good longsword (i prefer the drinker)
a good shield, (harmony, saving grace or sentinel)
gauntlets dex & girdle of strength (potions could work too)
the best crossbow you have, lots of bolts (just use +1 or +2, the real fancy ones never seem to get past their magic res.)
and the amulet that improves saving throws.

keld's saving throws should be negative by this point, he'll be immune to all their distance attacks, now go play.

he'll be fast enough to stay away from the mf's and keep shooting them from range, fire a few shots and move. run & shoot. every now and then get close and attack w/ sword - if he starts getting int drained run away and hide behind a door - int drain won't last very long.

umberhulks are actually the bigger problem, kill them first.

great fun!

Neb 05-18-2001 12:16 PM

Uhhhh, Lower Magic Resistance lowers 1% per level of the caster plus another number of percent(20%?).

Staralfur 05-18-2001 05:56 PM

Try summoning undead - they have no brains so the mind flayer mental attacks don't work on them. Use the undead to block the mind flayers, and take them out at range. Easy Peasy http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Your on crack it lowers it by much more then 1 percent. It starts at a base of 20 or 25 percent and improves with levels.

Mind Flayers are annoying but here's an easy way to deal with them. If you have a two handed fighter who is good in long swords, but the drinker in his main hand and the arbanes sword in his off. (Or you can screw the arbane sword and cast free action on him.) Then have him gulp down some potions of mind focusing or genius. Once his intelligence is maxed out chop down those illithids. That should be easy now, you'll be immune to their stun and domination, and almost immune to their intelligence drain. If you get drained low just wait a while. The effects go away.

usually mind flayers are assisted by umber hulks. take at the mind flayers first because they are more deadly that hulks. if playing the illithids in the underdark quest use a mind collar one one illithid and he will take out all hulks. all methods above are just as effective though when facing them head to head.
