Xar. Him and Montaron were cool, too

Rikard 05-17-2001 07:58 AM

I liked Kivan very much

Shar-teel, the best fighter and the worst companion ever!!!!!!

antonius 05-17-2001 10:39 AM

Kivan was cool, but probably a bit useless in BG2.

As an aside - does anyone know how they decided what the NPCs who did make it would be like? Did most people dual-class Imoen (I never did), did most people even keep Minsc or Jaheira in the group. I seem to have this recurring conversation with people - hey, didn't I kill you? Some things are justified (like Quayle's newfound responsibility), but some of it annoys me from a storyline viewpoint (without mentioning any names).

debiler 05-17-2001 12:24 PM

Although Khalid as very cool, his death was necessary for BG2. The story wouldn´t be as exciting as it would be when Khalid was still alive. I would have chosen Xzar. And Monty, of course.

Kalid,

Why did he have to die?

Greadius 05-17-2001 03:32 PM

I'm glad Khalid died. Freed up Jahiera http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

I liked Kagain... and I know Korgan is basically a twin of him except stronger, Korgan doesn't have that 20 con. Practical immunity to poison and natural regeneration were WONDERFUL features. Plus I think Kagain and Korgan would have made a great team as a front line. Oh well, so much for the twin dwarven ragers.

white heron 05-17-2001 03:57 PM

I must admit to killing off Kalid in BG1 ,i'd send him naked and unarmed towards the enemy and break the news to jahiera as best i could, not that it bothered her for long.
But i'd bring along Ajantis(with Holy Sukien bow),and Yeslick who could use the dwarven thrower.

antonius 05-17-2001 04:02 PM

I must be odd - I had a habit of killing of Jaheira in the same way. For some reason Khalid was always way too good to kill off - Give him gauntlets of ogre power, using the + 2 frostblade, with 5* Long sword skill. He made a great front line with Minsc.

Melusine 05-17-2001 05:10 PM

Xzar, definitely, all the way!!!

(upon gaining reputation points)~Must we be so *insufferably* charitable?~
(upon Montaron's death)~Montaron! I...I...I *never* loved you!~

Seriously though, I usually played with some of the following list:
Minsc
Dynaheir
Jaheira
Khalid
Imoen
Viconia
Edwin
Xan
Kivan
Yeslick
Branwen

Currently started playing again with the DSOTSC expansion.....looks promising.

My current party in BG1:
.
Me (Fighter/Thief)
Minsc
Kivan
Imoen
Branwen
Dynaheir
.
I have used in previous games:
Coran (excellent)
Yeslick (also good)
Others I didn't keep for long:
Xzar (too whiney)
Montaron
Xan (too whiney)
Khalid (too whiney)
Jaheira (too whingey)
Garrick (bard didn't suit my style of play)
Viconia
.
No, I never dualled Imoen, although one of my friends dualled her to a mage
.

Epona 05-17-2001 05:41 PM

Garrick the useless bard was always quite a laugh! But with intelligence of only 13 it was constant reloading when it came to learning spells.

I also liked Dynaheir, Kivan, Coran and Safana.

Xzar gives me the creeps, with his strange phrases (see Melusine's post above!) so he always gets dumped. And Khalid is just too nervous the whole time, so he usually gets killed!

At the moment (at the early stages of the game) I have:

PC (Cleric)
Garrick
Kagain
Jaheira
Edwin
Imoen

I am using the opportunity to try out some of the NPCs I never used before, so will be picking up others later since I never used anyone available from chapter 3 onwards (apart from Coran) before now, and maybe I will swap Edwin for Xan, I haven't decided yet.

simonbarsinistar 05-17-2001 06:21 PM

I finished the game with 2 different sets. #1 Kahlid, Jaheria, Imoen, Garrick, Brawen. I kept Garrick because of his lore level, it saved me a lot of money identifying items. #2 Kahlid, Imoen, Minsc, Dynaher, Kivan. I killed Jaheria early on, I got sick of "need's better leadership" crap. Left Brawen for the same reason. What is with the nagging whinning druids??? Kivan's skill with a bow was vwry help full for long range attacks and he could be helpful with a sword also. KIVAN is who I would have like to see in this new game.

I wouldn't trade Edwin for Xan unless you really need to because of alignment problems (Edwin=evil and Xan=neutral), because I really hated the fact that Xan can't cast Magic Missile (which is the only 1st level spell I use anyway)

In my current DSOTSC party which I started yesterday I have
Myself as a true neutral cleric
Jaheira
Xzar
Imoen dualled to Conjurer
Kagain
and Bub Snikt who probably has the most ridiculous name in the history of RPG. He's a fighter from the expansion pack but I cheated and gave him enough DEX to dual him to thief http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/redface.gif

I had Xan use charm a lot, came in real handy.

dimon37 05-18-2001 01:05 PM

My favorite was Coran, even though I don't have him currently in my party, he is probably the best archer in the game with 3 stars in Bow and dex 20.
I have
Tron(human fighter level 8)- 120 hitpoints
Minsc(level 8 ranger)
Shar-Teel (level 6 fighter/level 8 thief) wearing helm of oposite alignment
Bramwen - the only pure cleric in the game
Imoen (level 6 thief/level 8 conjurer)
Dynaheir
most of the fights are handled by the fighting trio, all wearing full plates
some fights are helped by Bramwen's animate dead and sometimes a couple of fireballs take care of the fight http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Neb 05-18-2001 01:08 PM

"Wearing a helm of opposite alignment" hmmmmm, will opposite alignment things wreck the BG2 storyline? For example Minsc with a helmet of opposite alignment?

You forgot about Viconia - even in BG1 she was always a favourite.
Can anyone remember the name of the female thief who was always _extremely_ suggestive? "Whatever you want, darling"

antonius 05-18-2001 01:32 PM

Just re-read some of the earlier posts - I meant Safana. For some reason I preferred her to Imoen (although not as good with bows).
She had some cool dialog with Minsc as well.

"Would you like to rub my feet?"
"I don't think you understand the bond I have with Boo"

Grand-Ranger 05-18-2001 01:46 PM

Come on people!!!

How in the world can you let go of Imoen,,*EXSPECIALY* after you played Bg 2!

Well then again mabye you can if you have already finished bg 2

antonius 05-18-2001 01:52 PM

I just got the impression all the way through BG1 that Imoen was a bit "forced".
The whole thing with the growing up together, lifelong friends business didn't seem right. I'm guessing that the plot of the "whole" was planned in advance though.

Safana.

jabidas 05-18-2001 06:17 PM

i liked xan a lot with his truly depressed sad outlook on life
i never liked minsc in bg1 i thought that the rangers and paladin were just second rate fighters due to no duel wielding
alora was pretty wierd and i thought quales biography was genuinly funny

hes probably been walking a long time

Why'd they have to kill Khalid and Dynaheir. I admit I used to kill Dynaheir over and over again. But I got to like her. An invoker is a decent specialist mage. And Minsc's conversations with her were just so funny! "Must you keep that rodent so close?"
