I think you should get the staff, cause you should use ring +2 and ring of gaxx better than ring of wizardry.

The odds are if you choose either of those your apprentices will explode. Esp. If one or more is alrady dead. I've treid sevreal times saveing and realoding and all 3 apprentices exploded every time for me.

Ya me to, i first said to make a meteor swarm spell, then one dies, after that i tried both the ring or staff and both of them die, is there no way to get a ring or staff?

If you ask them to make the staff, they will all explode but on one of thieir dead bodies you will find the staff

If you make all of them die then you wont have that apprentice to make potions for you later on. He will always be the last to die but will be unhappy if you chose a option that got someone else killed.

Its possible to get the SOM(staff of magi). All you need is Amulet of power, scroll of protection of undead and magic, and spell cloudkill, and cloak of mirroring.

What is this about letting apprentices make wands, rings, and potions?
I thought I had explored all of the planar sphere, and a few times at that, where do i find these chapps?

I'm playing a mage, and I'm getting worried. After reading a few posts, it seems like everything you do causes an apprentice to explode. Is there any way to get these items without killing your apprentices?

What ring+2? the Ring of protection? It won't work ..It's either Ring of Gaxx, or ring of protection, or go through the game again and get another ring of gaxx...

Yes you can. You can use Ring (or cloak) of protection +2 and Ring of Gaxx. My Necro uses them in conjunction.

Ok here is what I suggest. Forget the staff, you can get a staff of the magi later, better than the staff of Power. Get the ring instead, so you'll have the ring of wizardry AND the staff of the Magi, nice.
You don't have to play the game 2x to get 2 rings of Gaxx, I believe someone said if you are quick you can pickpocket the ring of Gaxx of the lich, THEN get it again when you kill it. I haven't tried it myself, but I will when I get there again to see if it works.


The rings and staff and a couple other items are able to be made if you are a mage player and make the Planar Sphere your stronghold. After you complete the sphere, re-enter it and check it out. The rings and such are the most powerful items you can make there. It doesn't matter if your apprentices die after you make it, if you have it your set.

Did anyone else notice that the ring of wizadry is different than the one in BG? Now it grants an extra level 5, 6, and 7 spell slot instead of doubling your level 1 slots. I think I liked the old one better (12 Magic Missles is just too much fun.)

In D&D, Rings of Wizardry are all different, depending on how they are enchanted.
