I'm playing the optional quest clearing the Umar hills. I've made it to the Shadow Dragon but she kicks my butt every time. It appears you need +3 or better to hit weapons, and my best are +2 as of now (she's also pretty magic resistant). Do I have to come back to complete this one when I have better weapons, or does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

+2 will work on her. You need to lower her resistance, though.

Well, in that case, maybe you want to level up your characters a bit more and explore a bit more so you will find better weapons and spells.... But once you are properly equiped with weapons and spells, make sure you summon lots of monsters (game will only allow 5 each time) to distract or wear out the dragon before attacking with your actual melee party members. He is not the hardest dragon in the game and you should be able to take him out quickly.

My group is the main character (Paladin), Aerie, Jaheira, Minsc, Yoshimo, and Mazzy.

How do I lower her resistance?

Thanks.

What weapons are you using? And what spells do you have memorized?

Major Weapons:
Main character = Namarra +2 (long sword)
Yoshima = +2 short bow, +1 arrows
Mazzy = sword of Arvoreen
Jahira = sling +2 w/ +2 bullets, or rather sad +1 staff
Aerie = spells

Major spells of Aerie (only a subset - indicated where cast)
Magic Missle
Acid Arrow
Fireball
Haste (cast)
Monster Summoning II
Stoneskin (cast)
Conjure lesser air elemental
Chant (cast)
Holy Smite
Defensive harmony (cast)

Major spells of Jahira
Bless (cast)
Animal summoning II

Of course, both of the above have a bunch of heals spells also.

I've also drunk some regenerating and giant strengh potions (main character), and summoned holy might and protected myself from evil (main character a Paladin).

Still getting my butt kicked!! (w/ plenty of "weapon ineffective" which seems to piss off Minsc).

Thanks again.

frostgiantsson 05-08-2001 12:43 AM

Oh, also, even with my main character's armor class -7 (nice armor, and defensive harmony), and protected from evil, blessed, and chanted, she often still kills him with one nod of her head!!!

Help please...

OK, without cheese tactics....

Dragons (in this game) only concentrate on one target at a time. So, spread out, use your protections and improvement spells to "tank-up", and bring in as many monsters / animals / elementals as you can...

Send the conjured stuff in first, and attack with everyone as the dragon attack your minions.

I don't see and "dispell" type spells in your mix, or arrows of dispelling, and you didn't mention what Minsc is using, if he can't hit her...

You may need to come back later, when you've got stronger equipment.

Thanks again, will try.

I also recommend getting more summonings. The more monsters to take the hits, the less hurt you get.

If all else fails, cheese tactics await!

Only send one summoned creature in the beginning otherwise she will wipe them all out in one death spell. She also seems to chase after ranged and spellcasters more then the other dragons so use that to your advantage.

If you are of level to memorize the mage spells "Lower Resistance", "Greater Malaison", and "Breach"...then you should be able to cast those on the dragon to make her susceptible to spells and such. If you cannot cast those spells yet, I would suggest that you come back to her at a later date when you are a higher level. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

Yoshi's traps can do a job on her. I consider this a ligitimate tactic, as it is what I would do if I were there. He should place his traps INSIDE the dragon's blue circle. Over a period of days he should be able to place a dozen or more traps. Then as soon as she turns hostile, the traps go off. If you don't have the patch installed you will not get any experience points for killing the dragon with traps. The patch is supposed to fix that but I haven't tried it.

Throntar 05-08-2001 09:16 AM

Sherpa...

Watch out for that tactic once ToB comes out...if you opt to install it.

Apparently, setting traps will make opponents (at least dragons) go hostile immediately. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

I don't recomend killing dragons with traps, you really need the EXP and you also miss the satisfaction you get wenn you kill a real tuff opponent.
But i confess, i used the trick once too.

I copied this from another forum...IT WORKS GREAT!!! "Have Arie or any cleric cast "Magic Resistance" on them while they are still non-aggressive. Not "Lower Resistance" which is an offensive spell. Now this will lower thier magic resistance from like 90 to maybe 20 depending on the clerics level..its like 2% per level. Then have Jahaira cast the Harm spell which if it hits..get this sets the health of the target down to 1. Then one single blast of magic missile will drop the great dragon..You may have to save and re-load a few times because Jahaira's thaco is not that high so she can only hit dragons with a critical hit."

It's a good tactic, but if you want her to have like 2% magic resistance, cast lower magic resistance after casting magic resistance. Then, spell and chop her.

i used some pretty cheesy ways to kill dragons.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
first....for the red dragon, i had some scimitars from bg1 that i got when i killed drizzt(mobbed him wit summons)then, wit a combination of haste, bless, chant, protection from fire, and some other crap, i charged the dragon...took me a few tries but hes dead. as for the shadow dragon....the help of my lvl 14 druid and my lvl 13/14 cleric/illu, u jus have to cast alot of mass-area effect spells like cloudkill and fireball. firestorm raped, but u prob dont have that yet. after a few cloudkills/icestorms...he should be pretty low on hp. jus make sure not to go too far or hell cast heal. then jus mob him. btw cast cloudkill in the area around the dragon while u cant see him yet or hell rape the crap ouuta ya..hehe

Volourn 06-03-2001 12:03 PM

He took massive damage which means he's dead forever. Though might have to fight the drag over again. Sorryyyy...

jimmyk 06-03-2001 12:09 PM

Can't Q saved after then left (auto-save)don't have any more saved games to go back to...............Ick!!!!!!!

Graccus 06-04-2001 12:11 PM

Make sure that you get the Dragonslayer Long Sword off of Samia. Equip Minsc with it, load up on Chants, Blessings, Defensive Harmonies, et all, and then cast Magic Resistance on the Dragon. Keldorn is also great with the sword that he starts off with.

I really didn't have much of a problem with the Shadow Dragon, as my mages (My main char, Airie, and Nalia) just stood back and nailed him while the fighters went to town on him. Magic Missiles are good spells to use when your mages are at lower levels, as the Dragon has to save against each arrow. Spells like Harm and Cause Critical Wounds are good for the same reason, as they target you, not the dragon.

Legolas the Elven Archer 06-04-2001 12:43 PM

You know, you could also get that stone to walk past the dragon, and give him/her/it a good fight once you've got the right weapons for the job.
