Hey All,

Quick question for anyone who has used familars...what do they do?
Do you actually get hints from them in the form of speech?
Curious, what kinds of animals have folks familarized and what do they think of them?
Any help would be appreciated, am looking to replay the game after I've finished the first time (have a shapeshifting Druid now,) and was thinking of using a mage mainly because I like the idea of having a familar with me...like Boo.

Thanks Much,
Bunny Foo Foo

They are good hitpoint bonuses for mages, don't over look this.
Some can be good pickpocketers, scouts, trap finders....they also add more depth to the game. Just don't use them for close combat, please. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

I have never played a mage so I don't really know what they do

But I do know that you get extra hit points from them. Some can cast spells. You can use them as 'scouts' b/c unlike summoned creatures, the fog of war is dispelled whereever the familiar goes. And, like 666 said you do lose 1 point of constitution if your familiar dies.

If any of this is incorrect please correct me anybody!

Exactly as Accord said, and they are damn useful, particularly the Rabbit http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif very fast so when you cast invisibility on it, it makes a great scout http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

They are also good fried with a little white wine sauce (red for the Rabbit), lightly basted on Gas Mark 6. Serve with fries in a McDonalds bag

For complete familiar stats, write the spell to your book and read the spell description. It tells you what familiar you get(based on alignment), and their abilities

Yes, only magic casters like mage, sorcerer and bard can have familiars.

Can't thieves read magical scrolls, though?

Altranan 04-05-2001 05:01 AM

Yes they can, but they can't have familiars. (unless you count Minsc http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/hihi.gif )
Familiars are more trouble than they're worth, especially if you lose them moving between areas.

Lord Shield 04-05-2001 05:03 AM

Which the patch 1.06 is supposed to fix

Altranan 04-05-2001 06:38 AM

Don't want to use the patch. I'm currently playing with a monk in my team and I like him to be ridiculously powerful. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Bruce The Aussie 04-05-2001 06:56 AM

is it true you can put them in your backpak or is that a stinking lie?

Yep. You have to speak to them to do it though. This is good if you're going against area-effect johnnies

I had a familiar once...but kept losing it! WHen the group would try to transition to another area that voice would drone on and on: "You must gather your party before...you know the rest..." And so I would go back wandering around trying to find the little bugger. Finally it must have gotten killed because I just noticed one day that it no longer was there! I don't even know when it happened!! I am really a responsible pet owner in my...ah...other life... http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...smiles/cat.gif ~really.

Hi Shrylia http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif ,

actually what you are describing is a known bug, so in no way related to your qualities as a pet owner ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Actually did they do their disapperance act while sitting in your backpack ?
That is the bug I was talking about, have experienced myself and can be fixed with the patch. Or did you lose him while he was out in the open ? Mine was almost always put away from danger in the backpack, except for some occasional petting. They are quite cute, indeed ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

Wow!! Thanks for all the advice.....no one seems all too keen on them though.

Do the familiars gain exp. as well? Can they increase their stealth? H.P.? or anything else? So if I have a cat, bunny, or such, they are only good for def. right? None of these animals attack?

Thanks again...and I really appreciate the advice,

Drow 04-05-2001 07:42 PM

I have a neutral good mage with a familiar and as the list above states it is supposed to knock opponents unconscious when it hits them but it never does and I never get any messages about the opponent making a saving throw either. Has anyone else ever got their pseudo-dragon to knock some1 unconscious?

No, they don't gain exp/hp/lvl ... etc, and I don't recommend using them to fight unless you want to lose 1 point of CON. They are good for hitpoint bonus and some other special abilities.

I have a familiar, but every time I let it out of my backpack it disappears. After trying this in 4 different areas, I don't let him out anymore.

He hasn't come out to play/take a leak in around 60 days, and now my backpack smells...
