hi all,
basically, i'm out of work for 2 weeks and need something to pass the time...so...why not buy a computer game? (Amsterdam is a little too expensive..) I'm hoping someone here can give me their first-hand opinions on BG2 - so i can decide wether to spend my hard-earned cash on it! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif ok, i've never really played computer-based RPG's before - excluding diablo1+2 -though when i was younger i was a DM in AD&D (heh...how odd that sounds now..) I'm more used to playing 1st-person shooters like half-life, etc...but i tend to rip through those in a couple of days....i'm looking for something that'll last a bit longer....but at the same time i dont want something that i get terribly involved in...(for fear of verbal abuse from my girlfriend..!), and i dont want to spend hours figuring out the User Interface http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif so many questions... oh look, its snowing... thanks all http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif |
Hm BG2 is a great game
and something that is quite true on AD&D eventhough you get a bit on overkill I never enjoyed a game as much as i did BG2 BTW are you dutch? ------------------ http://content.communities.msn.co.uk...&ID_Message=66 The Legend Master Necromancer Prince Rikard T'Aranaxz of Natri'x Clanmaster and Mental Father of the OHF Ramanish of Neathan'Calith High Priest and son of the Eternal Phoenix Lord and General of the Army of the West AND!!! Laughing Hyena!!! |
Yeah... The best game I ever played was BG2... It's perfect! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
And it will grant you MONTHS of fun! |
nah, not dutch...english, unfortunately.... :o\ - i love amsterdam tho' - best city in europe! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
|
Now...you're on a BG2 forum...so, of course you should expect to have everyone tell you that it's the best game that was ever created. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif
With that said...here's my take... If you want all around good RPG gaming, BG2 is the way to go. Personally I got bored with Diablo because it was just always more of the same. Find monster, kill monster, take loot, find more monsters...etc. BG2 requires you to think and solve lots of odd quests and puzzles. It is very "replayable" and is a little different every time you play it based upon your character's chosen field of study (Fighter, Mage, Cleric, etc.) and who you choose to include in your party. Overall, money well spent...but you may become a bit addicted and forget to eat/sleep/work, etc. However, if you are simply looking for a hack 'n slash dungeon crawl...go with Diablo or Icewind Dale which is also a good find monster, kill monster, take treasure game...so I am told. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif |
Hi ! well definitively, BG2 is THE game, as was BG in the past. But don't think 2 weeks will be enough, unless you play night and day...The main problem is that when you'll have to work again, you won't be able to stop playing, this game is a drug !!
in conclusion, if you want to buy a game, buy this one (but you won't have any family life anymore !) |
Err why is it unfortunate to be English? I'm very proud to be English personally. Amsterdam I agree on though.
P.S. Icewind Dale is along the same lines as BG2 but is quicker to play and more straightforward as regards quests, storyline etc. If time is a limitation I'd try that first. BG2 is bigger and better but requires a lot of time devoted to it. [This message has been edited by Charlie (edited 03-20-2001).] |

BG is a very good game. But as the gey above says, you will not have enough time to manage BG. I would rahter purchased Icewind Dale, it don't take so much time to manage.
(And when you geys talk about citys, Oslo is the best town in the world, just to mention it) ------------------ Defender and master of Good archmagic :mage1: |
I agree with Charlie - for just a two-week time period (and allowing for a harmonious love life http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif ), I'd buy IWD. BG2 is just amazingly huge and time-consuming.

Balder's Gate II is WAY better than Icewind Dale (to me) because there is so much more interaction between the characters in your own party. Like the others have said, the game is tremendously larger (although both are addictive)and will take quite some time to finish. I beat it in less than two weeks, but my wife started making little comments about sleeping alone.
I can't tell you enough... THIS IS THE GAME YOU WANT! To buy another in addition is great, but not as a substitute. |
Absolutely. Buy it Buy it now. Go on we'll be here when you get back. Just be prepared to lose your life. I never had one to begin with so I'm fine. It is one of the most finely crafted games I have ever played and will keep you hooked. Make sure you do the in game tutorial first as you're new to this type of game and read the manual, especially the different character classes, carefully. Be sure to change the game difficulty to novice too.
Hey, what are you still doing here? Get, go. Buy....now. ------------------ Just when you thought it was safe to visit this board. |
Frech, bonjour ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
Toxygene, BG II is a great game involving a lot of playing hours ... why not give a try to play it multi with your girlfriend ? I play multi with my husband and we are having a lot of fun ! ------------------ http://user.tninet.se/~csx358e/mbpix...ketches005.JPG http://sailfish.exis.net/~spook/1hyn6.jpg |
Yah, yah.. all you suckered married types and your responsibilities. See where it got you?! See?! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
I've had a great time playing BG2, so much so that I have forgotten that sleep can do a body some good. Play until 5:00 AM when I work at 9am, nap, work, drink tea all day, repeat. Of course, on the weekends, who needs sleep, right? Who needs a life? Friends? They're in my party! Heh.. Seriously, it's a fun game, and very time consuming. 2 hours a day might be possible. Might be. I'm not sure yet. I'm still playing it for 5+ hours a day (I've had it for 5 days so far). That's saying alot, as I haven't been sucked into a game like this in a long time. Hopefully I don't turn out like Tom Hanks in Mazes and Monsters. (insert winking smiley face here) |
.....so,you decided to play a real game? Heh!
I never played an RPG myself until BG1 ,i was put of with lots of demos that didn't impress. BG1 is great ,i'd recommend playing that first because once you've played BG2, BG1 will seem a little tame perhaps. ....having said all that ,i would go out right now and buy BG2 if i were you. Althogh my Banshee doesn't do openGL/Glide or whatever,i cannot believe the quality of the software version, the lighting and spell / attack effects are great, the maps are beautifully rendered, and the characters,....you will get to know them given time. If you've ever played an RTS or like tactical games then it's definitely for you. ------------------ "The temple is I and I am the temple". |
Hey, Moraine....you making a little photo album there?!
|
my overview:
BG one of the best, still a few anoyences BG2 a great game more for playing for a couple of months (when i bought it i played 10 hours a day for 1 and a half months) IWD never played it but heard its great (like bg2 but shorter) or as you said your a 1st person shooter type of guy you could get Deus Ex an exellent rpg very tactful or blow up everything in site (my way) great fun takes a bout 2 weeks to complete if good a 1st person shooters/RPG |
I am betting that if anyone on this board tells you they don't like BGII, they will be publicly flogged. In my most humble of opinions, BGII was given to us with Divine influence and created under Divine guidance. Buying BGII is simply the right thing to do for anybody. Now, I am not sure about this, but I think playing BGII might just bring you closer to God.

ok, ok,...i went to virgin megastore on oxford st, and they had it for £19...so i had to buy it... :oD
basically, even though i used to love ad&d, and used to be a DM, it aint my thing anymore....and after reading the manual...it seems like this game is based on all the ad&d rules..hmm...well, i've bought it so i might as well play it... played the tutorial - god! theres LOADS of stuff to get yer head round.. and the manual...could they have used a smaller font eh? i feel like getting an old-persons magnifying glass to read this thing! oh well, enough whinging, i suppose i ought to play the damn thing! :) ...suggestions on what makes a good first-time character? Mage seems pretty complex...wondering if i should just go for a fighter? And should i be human or.. or...something else? saw the lord of the rings trailer last night at the cinema...now thats something i'm *really* looking forward to.... glad to hear you are liking it! Here is a checklist of things not to forget to do because you will be spending all your time in the game. Go through this list every night before bed.
[] Did I say Hi to my family? [] Did I visit the Ironworks forum? [] Did I eat? Do this and you should be ok. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif ------------------ Tremble and despair, for I am power! All here are now judged, and are found wanting. |
I am glad to hear that you are getting into it. Please be sure to complete this simple checklist at least once a day to be sure that you are not neglecting your other responsibilities in favor of our favorite game.
[] Did I say Hi to my family? [] Did I visit the ironworks forum? [] Have I eaten? (optional) If you simply do this once a day, you can rest assured that all responsabilities in the outside world are being met satisfactorialy. ------------------ Tremble and despair, for I am power! All here are now judged, and are found wanting. |
In my humble opinion the mage is the hardest first class to play to many nuances to figure out with the spells. Also the quickes to die in a hand to hand battle i know all the 1st person shooters game players try this me included http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif . Go with a fighter first time through or untill you get the hang of tactics and game controls.
