The best weapon is the hammer which you find in Nalia's keep, it's +4 vs giants. And of course the Crom Faeyr is absolutely the best for the job.
Always have Lower Resistance available. Cast it a couple of times on the biggest one (Magic Resistance works too) and then you can dominate/charm it to beat the cr*p out of the other golems. Adamantine and Iron golems can only be hit by the best weapons but with a couple of lower res. you can kill them with magic missiles. Wand of Cloudkill will work too, not the spell but the wand.

personal preference is one fighter blocking a doorway with flametoungue +1 (long swordsword) and -10 AC with my #2 guy standing further back with azuredge (axe +3) as it can be thrown at the enemy.
Rarely bother with magic against golems unless there is no narrow passage to block

Melusine 03-16-2001 05:31 PM

That won't work on Adamantine ones...
Anyway sirgwayne tell us where are you in the game... tactics are different for all the different golems, depending on environment (like dirk said, narrow passageways etc)

mhhhh... I noticed that summoning 1 or 2 fire elemantals (or more, when facing Adamamtine or Clay Golems) For some reason, they kick golem-ass. Ofcourse they are weak and take long 2 summon, so its smart to use The Staff of Fire.

Try it...

One of the best weapons to deal with golems is the Celestial Fury, as it forces a save on every hit and if the golems fail it, they are stunned for a couple rounds. And, it is a +3 weapon, so it can hit any golem. The Crom Faeyr is of course the best, as it kills all golems except for Iron and Adamantine in a single hit.

Golems(spoiler)->

Flesh Golem - vulnerable to any magical weapon
Clay/Brain Golems - require magical blunt weapons
Stone Golems - Require +2 weapons or greater
Iron Golems - +3 or better
Adamantium - +3 or better, but takes greatly reduced damage
Both Iron and Adamantium breathe poison gas every 3 rounds. The +3 bow from Trademeet can hurt these guys and requires no ammo

Malecite 03-16-2001 06:06 PM

Correct me if im wrong but aren't you forgetting the golem slaying staff in teh underdark. I dont remember exact stats but its plus 3 and any golem struck with it must make a saving throw vs death or be instantly destroyed. My tactic was to send up my mage with tons of protect spells and hit them with it.

If it's stuck in a door, you can stand outside and use azuredge all day until they die.

My tactic for Adamantine and Iron Golems (which need +3 weapons to hit) is to use the Tansheron bow, which fires unlimited +3 phantom arrows.

You can get the bow in Trademeet, and if you are in Firkraags dungeon this tactic works well in all cases where you meet these particular golems, since there are always narrow doorways/bridge/cavern opening where the largest ones will get stuck.

Once they are stuck you can shoot from a safe distance with the Tansheron bow. I wouldn't get any character too near, because one blow from one of these guys can do an awful lot of damage. It takes a while, because each shot will only do 2 points of damage to an adamantine golem - I believe this is the maximum damage per hit that these guys can take, so be prepared to sit it out until they bite the dust.

Celestial Fury is in the temple district in a building marked on your map as 'guarded compound' (NE corner). You need to move the cursor around a bit to find the door as it is hidden, and expect a bit of a fight.

Azuredge (axe) can be used melee & thrown, and is in the Adventurers Mart

The Warhammer that Melusine mentioned is in the D'Arnise Keep in the golem chapel, but you don't have to fight them to get it if you use sanctuary spell, or grab it and then use an invisibility potion.
