Come on. Share your likes and dislikes here.
I absolutely LOVED the game, the best I've ever played.

Excellent game overall, though I'm of the opinion that Planescape: Torment was slightly better.

I'm a stickler for storyline, and BG2 had plenty of it. Plus, I'm an old PNP player, so this was/is really an ideal game for me. For the most part, the game was an accurate translation, rule-wise (with a few discrepencies). The characters were visualized well, and I really enjoyed the character interaction that was so vivid in BG2.

If I had a complaint - it would have to be the romances. I don't mind the fact that there were romances (in fact, I liked the idea), but as a female player, I was extremely disappointed in my lack of choices.

EDIT: I would have also liked to see more options in the way of alignment, as well as choices/events that could change your alignment (rather than just your reputation). I find that alignment should be treated as an ongoing choice, that should be subject to a character's choices/actions, and reflect a character's scruples. Yes, there were a couple instances in BG2 where something you did permanently affected your alignment - but not nearly enough in my opinion.

I really like the game!!

The only thing that is a bit frustrating is that when your main character dies you have to start again from your last save. A bit strange that everyone else is allowed to die all the time (well, all the time isn't to good, but you know what I mean) and your main character isn't....

The best RPG game i played. Nothing who can compare.

Overall an excellent game. I much preferred SOA to TOB even though TOB did provide closure to the Bhaalspawn thread.

Likes: Dungeon Artwork was excellent and character art was a VAST improvement over BG1. Loved the kits as well (especially the swashbuckler, paladin kits and the specialty priests) and the new classes (especially the Monk). I thought the magic items were extremely well designed and well distributed over most of the classes, although it took the expansion to rectify some of the item inbalances.
I particularly liked some of the TOB items like the ammo belts!

Dislikes: I thought game balance was spotty. Some of the special abilities were too powerful, and not all of the Bhallspawn were well matched or potent enough. I also disliked the range of NPC choices - thought that most of the really good NPCS had evil alignments. I also would have preferred to see FEWER magic items in the game. There were encounters in the game where magic items were being dropped in such large numbers that it was ridiculous.

Great game.

Dislikes: Stealing is too easy. A good guy like Keldorn should really dislike such actions. Some items are too powerful. Irenicus should have been harder. I think he is too easy. Firekraag was a harder fight.

great overall atmosphere, although the power inflation somewhat hurts it

one thing that really really REALLY put me off: bad ai.
i know this isn´t supposed to be ´commandos´ in a fantasy setting, but combat could be sooo much better.

if they had made the game difficult by making the npcs smarter (enemies concentrating on party members with already low hit points or spellcasters, enemies getting out of conintuous area effects, changing targets or mode of attack if what they´re doing is ineffectual for more than 2 or 3 rounds etc) instead of just giving them bigger and nastier spells and attacks, the battles would be more satisfying.

Firkraag is hard with some char, easy with others. The same with Irenicus. :)

Whalken 01-15-2002 11:26 AM

Yes, I agree that Irenicus should be a bit tougher. And Firkragg maybe a bit easier.
But I am sure, if you sit down and think, I dont think you would come up with alot of bad things with the game. It is really a game in its own level.

I enjoy this game even more than Baldur's Gate and much more than Planescape. Just starting out in a city setting makes the game more interesting as in Baldur's Gate you had to wait a few chapters. The sub-plots are more detailed and interesting. You get higher levels right off the bat (remember how long it took to get to level 5 in Baldur's Gate?). I find the characters more engaging and it feels like more variety. And how can you not like kamikaze goblins!?!

My only peeve would be still too much hack and slash, for example, the ruins in Windspear Hills. Give a few less characters who are more ingenuous opponents - I'd get more satisfaction from taking out some uber-vampire than a bunch of guber-vampires.

I think the idea was for Firkraag to be the hardest fight in the game... because in his 'Talking' he is quite proud of how much more powerful he is than both u and Irenicus.... but I beat him with only 20HP lost from my Barbarian in chap. 2!!! and had I been fighting Irenicus he would have slaughtered me.... So i find it strange..
Sometimes Firkraag is by far the hardest fight but on occasions he casts hardly ne of his good spells and just jams with u right into melee... weird...

Another hard opponent was Nizid'manti.. musch the same as Firkraag... when it casts the insect spells and gets u caught in the plant growth it is 1 of the hardest fights in BG2.... but when it doesnt cast the insect plauge and poisin attacks it is quite easy

In short (and I mentioned this in a post comparing this to IWD and P:T), Chapter 2 was so bothersome that it led me to catch a case of chronic restarter. It's too boring and detracting from the plot to have to deal with all these side quests unrelated to the plot (like Nalia's keep), but you have to go through this to get the money for Gaylen Bayle. That one thing alone was enough to ruin the game for me. It makes no sense. My best friend gets imprisoned so I'm going to go out and help a bunch of other people and get some cash on the side to help get her back? Nuh-uh. I though Chapter 2 was a sloppy way to get other NPCs and beef up the characters. One of these days, I'll have the patience to get through in and on with the rest of the game before getting sick of it and putting it aside for IWD or the Fallout Series.

Guk73 01-16-2002 02:21 AM

I agree that this is a great game with alot more options than BG1 but that said, BG1 did have a better storyline.
The whole series will have to go down as the best of all time IMHO.

Jan 01-16-2002 03:42 AM

Doing all the side quests is funny and makes the story better. If you couldn't be bothered to do them then just do the "sell and steal trick" (15.000 in no time).

Gorgasim 01-18-2002 01:13 PM

Ya its pretty damn good.

This is the best game I've ever played, it's fantastic. Great story, graphics, gameplay and sound. So addictive too. I've replayed it with every class

robo donkey 01-19-2002 03:04 PM

The best RPG the world has ever known! Seriously though a vast improvement over BG1, the vastly expanded role of magic through the game really adds strategy and depth over BG1.

Kaz 01-19-2002 05:17 PM

Great game! I love it, I'm completely addicted!
One thing I REALLY miss over BG1 is... the wildernesses. In BG1 you had to journey through small patches of woods to get somewhere... it wasn't really boring because of all the strange encounters! Like the little boy "Albert" and his dog "Rufie"... I laughed so hard I fell out of my chair. I really miss that :(
But apart from small things, the game is excellent. Storyline is cool, good interaction with NPCs, nice surroundings (drow city, coool), good choice in characters (shall I play a priest, a mage, an archer, a kensai, a monk, a cavalier, a barbarian, a swashbuckler, a stalker, an assassin, a...)

Barlik Longbeard 01-19-2002 08:02 PM

Best game I have ever played, though (and I am really asking for critisism here) it is a little repetative when you have played it more than 10 times. I haven't completed it 10 times, only once, but nearly twice! Good story line, and the Irenicus stuff is good cuz it gives variety to the game and shows you how you can effect the rest of the world, instead of fighting for supremacy for the Throne of Bhaal. Better interface than BG and the resolution options was a good idea. If they had that for BG than I would actually get around to completing it. But you seem to level up more frequently in BG2 than in BG, which is good. And you finally get around to casting some pretty mean rs spells!

Barlik Longbeard 01-19-2002 08:05 PM

And another point is that we are on this specific forum for a reason, because we all like BG2. If we didn't then no one would have replied to this post. Would we, eh? Eh?!?
