OK so I found the guarded compound in the Temple district, they said it was private quarters, but I searched anyways, nothing much on floor one.. Is this part of a quest? I had a rogue stone (from the dead ranger) and enetered. or at least that is how i think I entered. I went to second floor and got my arse whipped up like eggs for breakfast. I haven't even come close to winning the battle.. I am level 10 paladin with Minsc, Valgyr, Jaheria, Aeira and Yoshi (Nalia got kidnapped, should I rescue her first?)

Caliton 02-04-2001 09:45 PM

Dude, that is one of the if not THE hardest battle in the game...forget about it and come back when you are higher level ; ) I did it with an average level of 19 or so

Armisael 02-04-2001 09:46 PM

Use spells like insect swarm, chaos and emotion, not necessarily in that order, and the battle will be far easier. The only real threat is the fighter with the celestial fury, so make sure he goes down first (use hold person or command).

Accord 02-04-2001 09:48 PM

Entering the guarded compound have nothing to do with the rogue stone (that is for the twisted runes). The guarded compound is suppose to be the slave lord quest, it basically involve you walk into the building, kill the inhabitants and loot. No one in the game will give this quest for you, the real incentive to do this quest (other than for killing sake) is the loot (got some nice treasure on those guys at the 2nd floor).

HavokHound 02-04-2001 09:58 PM

So, I shouldn't feel bad for getting pasted.. I killed the first floor guys ok... So that is where celestial flury is... Well maybe I will come back. after i take a little boat trip. Maybe I should try and find that dude in red, I sloe to going up.. oh wait no I am not. UGH!>...

I was just wondering if I'd done the right thing in there as well.

IF you want to go and have a fight with them (my main character is around level 14, and others are slightly lower)just go mad on the spells to protect yourself and kick the living daylights out of the monster guys downstairs. I went in with Jan, Aerie, Jaheira, Minsc (and Boo!), Valygar and my main character is a ranger.
Kept Aerie out of the fight, casting spells, and used Jan (he's really low level at the minute - just picked him up) to throw skulls at them!!
After that I wondered around doing other bits of quests and went back in, the only difference was Yoshi instead of Jan.
Went upstairs,no-one crossed the trap line or engaged the enemy except Aerie, gave 'em a couple of blasts of cloudkill from a wand and then everyone WENT BACK DOWNSTAIRS.
This meant that one of the humans and one of the monsters followed me, and I gave them a good kicking. just so happens that one of them had the celestial fury (he didn't have time to use it) -he he he!
As I wasn't sure if this was part of a quest area, I didn't go back upstairs (the guy had an empty potion bottle on him - never seen that before) but if it's not part of a quest, then the rest are in for a butt kicking as well.

Hmmm...depends on how many mages you have,
I was able to cast 4 fireballs straight away which made it easier.
Don't move and use good arrows and wands!
Have Keldorn cast True sight!!!!

white heron 05-12-2001 07:20 AM

I really enjoy that fight. But it can be done at low level. If you use invisibility/stealth ,you can run through the trap and hide in the siderooms where there are secret doors so you can evade them if they follow.I killed them all one time with just one level 10 fighter/mage/thief,a couple of stink clouds, web, and Tuigan bow.Dont be put off.Go and take them out .
-Yeah ,definitely use true sight, that Katya is deadly(backstab) and i consider the most dangerous.

Deddard 05-12-2001 02:24 PM

Sory - should have said lead character was level 10 - dillusions of grandeur there LOL!!
Only had the one true mage (Aerie) Jan was in there at the start, but I didn't use his magic.
Taking the up and downstairs approach seems to be a good approach for many tough guys - divide and conquer!!

Dreamer128 05-12-2001 02:56 PM

Going back downstairs is the best way to do it, just run upstairs and get back right away.
Make sure there are some traps and summoned monsters right down the stairs.

Good for u lot with your parties. This was a long time ago, but I distinctly recall the whole guraded compound bunch falling to my solo assassin on the 2nd attempt. A few poisoned arrows took out the mage, no more true sight. Then I ran with the boots of speed, hid round the corner and took pot shots with poisoned arrows at the cleric until he died, hiding in the shadows every time the lads came after me. After that it was a simple case of backstabbing everyone a few times. Ketta did annoy me a bit but I luckily managed to poison her and she died after that, although she did backstab me once so I had like 20HP left.
So stop crying over level 10 parties and go in there with one assassin. True, my assassin was about level 14 or 15.

Soven 05-13-2001 02:02 AM

DAMN I tried a lot of times just to beat the guys downstairs but when i finally did 4 of my characters died(lucky cleric alive). Since my cleric only has one harpers call i must rest after that And GUESS what ALL MY EQUIPMENT GONE!!!!!!!!

I reloaded and continued with my quest.

They really are not that hard its just that you have to realize they can do the same stuff your party can and are not just some one move orcs and so you use a different strategy. The thief and mage are the priority to take out. Then the kensai and finnally the minotaur and the neo orog. Have all buff spells and true sight cast before going upstairs and if you have power word silence get the mage first then the cleric.

I was lvl 9 paladin when doing that ( just to get celestial fury to dualwoield with flail of ages)

my party:
minsc (flail of ages and axe got from nalia's keep)
jaheira (quartyer staff)
keldorn (his sword)
nalia (Arbanes bla bla... free to move specail)
aerie (two maces)

first of all have Jaheira cast her anti magic user spell (dont know the name) anyway that will spread to all of the magic user and most of them will get moral failure... than have Aerie and Nalia cast speed and strenght on all( had spells making everyone effecten with one spell) go kick their arse with Minsc me and Keldorn... while jaheria summon mountain bears and Nalia and Aerie cast magic missile... the fight will soon be over without much damage taken.

Ah, the Slave Lords of the Guarded Compound. I remember that encounter; I ladled out the defensive spells, emptying Nalia, Anomen and Jahiera of all useful preotective enchantments; set the best weapons we had, with the party on Haste; and charged up the stairs to meet the foe sword-to-sword.

After the first fifteen tries, I had managed to survive for an impressive minute and a half.

After the first twenty tries, I had managed to kill half of them.

After going away and gaining a few levels here and there, we came back and got them on the third try. But ye gods, they're 'ard!

NOTE: Has anyone noticed that if an invisible thief triggers the release of the monsters and then runs away fast before they appear, they fight themselves? Good ol' Pit Fiends!

Death spell??haven't come across it

Draggor 05-15-2001 02:28 AM

yeah that pit fiend can become your own best weapon. Cast protection from evil 10 foot on your party then set off the trap. The demon will attack all the other monsters as he can't see you. Kill those monsters then lead some of the bad guys down the stairs. The three main fighters should be the only ones to follow you. Let the demon kill them too. Remember you're in the temple district. Theres no shame in running away, getting healed, then coming back. I usually do this place at around level 12, as soon as I get protection from evil 10 foot.

Unknown. Some strategy guides refer to these warriors as 'the Slave Lords', which leads me to believe they are the kingpins of the slavery racket in Athkatla... But I could be wrong.

The Twisted Rune battle is in the Bridge District lower left section, but you need a rogue stone for the door to open. *THAT* was a much more difficult battle than the guarded compound. Although not an easy battle, I never hesitated to do the guarded compound early on, 'cause there's some really nice treasure. Make sure you have some oracle and breach scrolls and you will do much better with the mage and thief.

Pennance 05-17-2001 11:36 AM

Actually it took me 2 tries to defeat the Twisted Rune place and I was just on my way to head to Chapter 3. All I did was summon a Skeleton Warrior, Air Elemental, and a Pit Fiend after Blessing, Protecting From Evil, and Hasting the party. Then Yoshimo set some inconspicuous traps while Viconia laid a Glyph of Warding and the Hero Skulltraps it. Then Aerie Cloudkills the room and initiates dialogue. By the time the Lich teleports to me he springs 5 traps and is dead before defenses are raised. The fodder absorb much of the Beholder's wrath while the cloudkill eats it away. Killed the assassin no sweat, but the Beholder turned the Air Elemental and Viconia against me. Hold Personal alleviated that. Then Breached the Mage and jammed my sword up his butt. End of story. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
