Yorick 02-04-2001 12:03 AM

Memnoch,
I've had Pigs intestine, Stingray and a few other things but drew the line at 'Century egg porridge'. Eggs dipped in horse urine are not for me! Don't think I've had Balut...

Hey thanks Ramon, Suul-Bomber, I will enjoy, and I'll look forward to that pint

Bahamut 02-04-2001 12:11 AM

I tell you, balut's a killer! Its great but its... kinda gory... hehe daym... hey! If you happen to be here (probably not since youre going somewhere else) tell us ayt? Im sure Zor would want to meet you too! Take care always and don't forget us! hehe

Stealth Bomber 02-04-2001 12:32 AM

With that kind of diet no wonder you aussies are mad. Having said that I have had sheeps balls but urine soaked eggs????? I hope you jest. Promise the worst thing you will get here is haggis or deep-fried Mar's bar( a chocolate bar).

Bahamut 02-04-2001 12:38 AM

Well bout the weird food, as long as its safe, Ill try it! We only live once ya know!

Ladyzekke 02-04-2001 12:42 AM

Hello Yorick. It's pretty wild that you can travel so much and still visit us here on the Board. What do you have a laptop? Sounds like you are having a great time, I feel a bit sorry for your stomach though! Yikes that egg thing....sounds like something that should be given to Charlie's shop! I mean come on people, ever heard of BUTTER?!! Hey, it's yellow too! Ugg!

Yorick 02-04-2001 12:45 AM

Stealth, no that was what I'd had in Singapore. Aussie food is meat and three veg, meat pies, bacon and eggs etc but has access to Indian, Italian, Vietnamese food etc. I don't think I've had standard western food for a while anyway (Indian/Thai-aholic), but the Chinese food here is so much tastier than home (access to more spices) Mind you, some of the guys are ex-students of mine who spent time in Oz in 1999. They said that their tastebuds nearly died of boredom over there, but there were a few REALLY good restaurants by their own standards. I'm grabbing their names and locations!!!

I think I've had haggis, but not sheeps balls. Haggis is a kind of sausage right?

Yorick 02-04-2001 12:48 AM

Hi Ladyzekke, missed your msg before my last post. Thanks for the hello!
I'm in an internet cafe (a bit quiter now) I'm procrastinating. I really should be going.... (just a few more posts...)

Bahamut 02-04-2001 12:53 AM

You pay for your trips?

Yorick 02-04-2001 12:59 AM

Damn straight! I worked like a dog!

Yorick 02-04-2001 07:10 AM

Hello peoples. As you may or may not have read, I'm no longer in my beautiful beloved Australia but have gone on what Australian Aboriginies call 'walkabout'.

Likening myself to a wandering minstral I've taken my instrument (well one of them anyway - my voice) and gone overseas.

I'm in Singapore at the moment, but will be heading to fair Europe and Grand Brittania. I've landed a bit of work here so may even be back here after Europe... who knows.

Anyhow, there will be times when I can't get to the web so unless you email me at chanteur@bigpond.com, this thread will be a way to say hello.

The point of this too is that some of us will meet up - like Memnoch and I did last week - for a drink, a chat, and the wierd experience of putting a face to the blue screen, and adding body language and tonal inflection to the typing (I for one use my eyes and sarcasm a lot for example)

Azuth mentioned getting a few of us together in England, Moiraine and I are meeting up in France, and I had another invite to a northern English Pub which I can't find now - I've lost the website and the poster. So they don't all get lost make sure you post them here and/or email me!

Singapore rocks BTW, very cool city, great food, friendly people and enough trees to make a greenie like me delerious with joy (in a city too)

Hope to SEE you soon.

Hugh (Yorick)

Memnoch 02-04-2001 07:59 AM

Sojourner, keep us posted on where thy journeys take thee. A wandering minstrel thou art truly! Yorick the Skald? Methinks Yorick the Jester suits thee better. 'Twould be great to use this thread as "Travels of the Sojourner" to keep us in the loop!

This be well and truly off topic so be warned all!!!!!!!!!!

Stealth Bomber 02-04-2001 08:09 AM

That's a hell of a walkabout man! Where are you going in Britain? If its anywhere up North near Scotland, let me know and I can buy you a warm pint of heavy with a whiskey chaser to make up for my crack about you and Moiraine. But then again you did say you were meeting up...

Seriously I would love to get together. It's only fitting two such warped minds should meet!

Ramon 02-04-2001 08:14 AM

Enjoy !

So long,

Ramon

Yorick 02-04-2001 11:53 AM

Found it:
Donut - www.wheatsheaf.freeserve.co.uk

Man, I'm in a warzone here, in a gamezone/internet cafe surrounded by Chinese and Malays playing counterstrike at HIGH VOLUME! It's one huge explosion (LOL). Needless to say my tinitus affected ears are being protected by earplugs.
I'm going to bail in a tic and take a 'Comfort Cab' back to the house I've been put up in. Cabs are bloody cheap here and most plentiful.

I've got to say the food continues to be a revelation, always a new and different dish. I had a meal with some ex pats from Canada/Britain/Australia earlier (instead of the locals I've been with). All of them had come here for a short while and ended up staying for ages. And the food was all stuff I'd never had.

Anyone here had a Durian BTW? Bahamut, Mem or Zor? If you have you'll be pleased to know I had my second one today. For those who haven't it is the most foul smelling fruit around - smells like vomit. The effect is similar to a french cheese I suppose smell=bad, taste=good. The taste is like a bizarre combination of strawberries and onions.

Memnoch 02-04-2001 11:57 AM

Durian? Of course I have! It smells like absolute shit but tastes quite good. You haven't had balut yet, I don't know if they have it in Singapore. I can't have it myself but my dad loves it. I'll leave it to Zor or Bahamut to explain what it is...

Bahamut 02-04-2001 01:01 PM

An Im sure its gonna pay off... now I envy people who can go places... haaay.... And I have this certain liking of M2M! Have you guys heard of them!

Yorick 02-04-2001 01:22 PM

The Norwegian duo? Now why would a young lad like yourself like a couple of girls like that eh?

I'll keep the Phillipines in mind Bahamut. I'll be heading back this way after all.

Also don't envy me Bahamut, I've had my share of bad knocks this last couple of years. This is something I've wanted to do and aimed for. I love travel and so prioritised it above things like replacing my crashed car for example.

Armisael 02-04-2001 08:53 PM

You lucky bastard, Yorick. I've never even set foot outside this country. Have a bloody good time and tell us if anyone was exaggerating on the 'what do you look like' post. ; )

Zoratorak 02-05-2001 03:55 AM

HEY HEY HEY!!! i missed this one... sorry if im late in repling... heheheh!!!

i for one never liked balut... (makes me feel wierd...) but its good!!
century egg is the best!!!
i noticed that us asians have a unique sense when it comes to food... man... you western people never experienced these kinds of food... let me give you a hint when your going to eat here in asia "IGNORANCE IS A BLISS"... its good but you dont want to know what it is...
try eating some
Durian??? - hmm.. sorry ... i eat the food but not memorize it... i check it out...

i agree with bahamut about meeting you here if your passing by the Philippines ... it would be great finally meeting ya Yorick boy!!! (with bahamut too!!)

its fun i guess to travel finally around the world and meeting your friends here in the board in person... say hi to Moraine and the rest of the gang also... im sure it would be fun for you...

you noticed CS (counterstrike) its way popular here in the lan games (computer for rent) ... apparently those owners of those gaming systems are making lots of moolah.. and those guys are diehard fanatics... belive me you dont wanna bet with them ... they play everyday for like 3 hrs at least... its really popular here for 2 years now... i only play oncein a while since it is so addicting...

oh yeah... if your passing by the Philippines... Bahamut and I can show you where you can get the cheapest and the best pirated stuff ... a music cd is only 1.50 dollor and a pcgame is only 4 dollars and a playstation game (1) is only 1 buck ... all latest and all the best!!!

draconia 02-05-2001 04:13 AM

I guess I have never read a post explaining this. What do you do Yorick? I can guess that you sing and play an instrument. It sure sounds like a lot of fun traveling all over. Hope you have fun on your travels.

Memnoch 02-05-2001 04:24 AM

Zor & Bahamut : Greenhills??

PS Nagkita na ba kayong dalawa?? Kami ni Yorick nagkita na.

Zoratorak 02-05-2001 05:17 AM

hmmm... i was also thinking the same thing Memnoch (after i posted the post)... hey bahamut... want to meet?? do you have a cell??

yeah... greenhills is the best place to get the cheapest stuff anywhere around... (unless you go to a rural area)

Memnoch 02-05-2001 05:27 AM

You guys should do it! Pagbalik ko diyan dapat magkita din tayo. Do u go to La Salle Taft? I know the Director of Computer Studies there.

robertthebard 02-05-2001 05:50 AM

Yorick, you lucky dog. I got to travel a bit with my music as well, but I never got out of Kansas. That's right, we have the internet in Kansas, and some of us even have cars! But I never got to take it way on the road like that. There's not much of a market for actual bards anywhere, that I know of. I do have a local gig anually, but it doesn't even pay for itself, it's just a love for music thing. Enjoy the trip, and try not to have too much fun.

Zoratorak 02-05-2001 06:31 AM

REALLLY ????? YOU KNOW THE DIRECTOR OF COMPUTER STUDIES??? COOL !!!!

im gonna study in La Salle but my course is only my secondary option... i wasnt able to get in computer studies =( ... they said my grade in HS was not so good... sniff... and that is the course i want to go... any suggestion Memnoch? im gonna try to get a change of course but i think its still gonna be tough.. iheard that La Salle made it hard to have a shift since they found out that many people shift once they get in... i need like an 90+ average to get into computer studies and that is not easy =(

Memnoch 02-05-2001 06:47 AM

Zor, I'll email you on that issue. Don't want to go TOO offtopic with Yorick's thread since lots of people will be reading it and he will be using it like a travel diary to record his experiences!

Zoratorak 02-05-2001 07:02 AM

yes boss whatever you say boss ... besides im looking forward what good olYorick will be having right now... besides... im also looking forward "if" he comes here... (to the Philippines...)

bilqis 02-05-2001 08:14 AM

Yorick - what you're doing sounds WONDERFUL! I hope you'll keep us posted here on your adventures. Those of us with wanderlust (and too many commitments) can live vicariously through your stories. Have Fun & Good Luck!

Moiraine 02-05-2001 02:27 PM

Hi Yorick,

I hope you singing went very well.

Lord of Alcohol 02-05-2001 02:39 PM

Hey Yorick, if you happen to tour in the US I'd be happy to see you perform... for a turnip! Good Luck~Intoxoboofhead

Stealth Bomber 02-05-2001 03:20 PM

Yorick, sorry it took so long to reply, time differences etc. Haggis is a sheep stomach's filled with offal, oatmeal and onion and a few other ingredients. It tastes far better than it sounds, but like asian dishes its best not to ask too many questions. Personally I love asian food, although I have only been to Thailand. After trying various local dishes, despite being warned they were very hot, I thought I would seek out a true local restaurant that catered to the locals, in order to try the real thing. After enjoying a fantastic soup, served in a fresh coconut, I had beef with chilli. This turned out to be mainly chilli, as I had about 20 of the smallest and hottest chillies available on my plate alone. Unfortunately, I only realized what they wefe after 1 mouthful. I had thought they were red pepper or tomatoe. Never for one minute did I think any human was capable of eating a dish quite that hot. I soon learnt not to jump to conclusions and after drinking both my lager and my girlfriend's, along with a large jug of water, I beat a hasty and embarresed retreat. Still, I still enjoy other Thai dishes especially the chicken and lemon grass with (milder) green chillie.

If you travel to Mexico, I can recommend the chicken wrapped in banana but avoid the one in chocolate sauce, a bit too unusual to say the least. English cuisine is far more mundane and will prove dissapointing after French cuisine. Moiraine, if your reading this, I think you should introduce him to l'escargot and gruillon(?). Not sure if they are spelt correctly but I think you can guess.

Finally, don't be too adventurous in your diet as you are meeting old friends for the first time and you do want to create the right 'atmosphere'

Moiraine 02-05-2001 04:03 PM

Hi SuulBombYinn,

Escargot you spelled OK, but I can't think of anything like 'gruillon' ???

My husband is the cook of your couple (you DON'T want to eat anything cooked by me, I assure you , I guess I should buy this Orkish cook book in Charlie's shop ), so he will choose what to cook for Hugh ... I will choose the cheeses however ...

Lord of Alcohol 02-05-2001 04:30 PM

Stealth, your quite correct about not asking too many questions. In the Phillipines (Olongapo City) I ate many meals from the street vendors. Tasted very good but I think I ate a monkey. If you dont ask, you dont barf! Didnt work when I lived in China though. Tentacles are hard to hide!

Charlie 02-05-2001 05:12 PM

Hi Yorick.

Don't go looking for that pub (Donut) up North mate.... It's in London.
Enjoy yourself and enjoy life my friend.

Cloudbringer 02-05-2001 05:18 PM

Yorick, All that traveling sounds wonderful. New places, people, food. Well, the food part is sounding less and less palatable to this unadventurous diner, but the rest sounds great!
Whereabouts are you now?

Yorick 02-05-2001 11:36 PM

Still in Singapore/Temasek/Shonan-to/Singapura, somehow I got roped into singing a few gigs here. Last night I sung for a large business dinner put on by this very large church here (13 000 members). The speaker was a brilliant black American named Dr. A.R. Bernard. A wizard of words who if he sung would sound like Marvin Gaye (great voice).

I'm going to take a hike (by car, it's just a saying) into a bit of the Malayan peninsular today. Hopefully I'll see a bit of jungle but the jungle won't see me. (I don't want to meet a tiger) I won't go too far though because I've got a smaller pub gig with some of my new friends tonight.

I went into the expat part of town last night - I've been staying in a Chinese area - and up to an Australian mates apartment that was total 'Blade Runner'. 21st floor, a view to die for and a rent that'd kill you. Funny thing was, this dinner was the first western meal I had since being here, and the only time I got the runs..... very odd.

Thanks for the well wishes guys! It feels like I'm taking a bit of home with me when I log in.
Draconia you guessed right. I'm a muso, make my living either session singing (mercanary vocalist for recordings/commercials etc) or by producing/engineering independent albums for smaller artists. I have a few records of my own but if I lived off them I would be starving Moiraine probably has the biggest collection of some of my stuff on MP3 so if you want to hear some and she's cool drop her an email request as I can't send any at the moment

I made sure I caught up with the history of the place over the last few days. Normally as I love history, I have some sort of knowledge a place I'm in - as it inspired a reason to visit in the first place. With Singapore I was unnervingly ignorant, so have asked LOTS of questions, gone to a museum, watched a small historical film, and read a bit and now feel like I have a bit more of an understanding not only of the history, but also as a result, the 'collective psychology'.

It's a fascinating place. Like a trade based city state of old. A sometimes futuristic meeting point for travellers and businesses. It feels very 'hublike' in the scheme of things.

Well I'm off,

A bientot for now

Moiraine 02-06-2001 12:08 AM

OK, I've got the trick !

Everyone interested by Yorick's songs, please give me your mail address here, and I'll send you some, split in two parts.

You can download a tool allowing to join the two parts together here : http://www.ordix.com/mpack/index.htm

(I'll send you a short user guide along with the mail).

Please, don't be too many too ask, because I have one of two solutions :

- either I send you the songs from work, and if I send too many of these, it will get noticed
- or I send you the songs from home, and as I have only 40 H of Internet conexion per month ...

Moiraine 02-06-2001 12:20 AM

Suul-Yinn-Stealth-Bomber,

I sent you a Yorick song, please tell me if all is OK !

The X 02-06-2001 12:51 AM

Its a good thing for you to hike in Malaysia(Mt Ophir perhaps..?)since there's nothing much left for you back here in Singapore(almost no forest or jungle). There's buildings all around you!!!The only tiger you gonna see will be the one in the Zoological Garden.Have you perhaps been to one of the islands around Singapore? Pulau Ubin will be a great place for you to be one with nature and Sentosa Island will grant you a treat with all its fascinating sites and the cool beaches(The beach volleyball, the babes and oh yeah, the bikinis!!!).

draconia 02-06-2001 03:52 AM

Wow Yorick, you sound like a very busy guy. How fun it must be to be able to go to different parts of the world. I would love to be able to travel but with 3 kids, I hate to drive to the grocery store. What you do sounds like so much fun and alot of work. I would love to hear your music. I will definitely ask Moiraine, that is if she doesn't mind. Have fun in your travels and I wish you the best of luck.
