How do you dual class a kensai to a kensai/mage??? the dual class buttom is just grey. How to????

Incarcerator 11-17-2000 10:58 AM

The only thing that I can think of is that your character does not have at least INT 16, though I’d recommend an INT of 18.

I have a kensai with STR 18/00, DEX 18, CON 18, INT 18, which I have dualled at level 9, having 2 profficiencies in 2 weapon style, and 5 profficiencies in katana. I especially like this combination, ilove mages in BG2.

But that is just my oppinion.
Good luck now.

spludge 11-17-2000 11:54 AM

I bet u that u arnt human and therefor u cant dual-class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Rikard 11-17-2000 01:49 PM

ehm 18*5+8(char)=roll 98
that's called cheating
even elfs rearly get roll 90

anyway
you need atleast 15 on you old prime (15 on str for you) and 17 on you new prime (17 on int)
Anyway i don't like kansei-mage coz you'll have to melee fight in which you can easely get interupted in your spell casting

Just think about it

Rikard 11-17-2000 01:51 PM

sorry that 18*4+3+8=83 but I don't think you have 3 on wis

Memnoch 11-18-2000 12:31 AM

Sorry, but you can't wear drow adamantite chain if you're a kensai mage because it counts as armor. And what would you do when you leave the underdark? You can't wear bladesinger chain either. Only robes. But I agree that Tenser's makes your kensai-mage a temporary killing machine.

damocles 11-18-2000 05:07 AM

I brought my char in from BG1.
19 st 18 dex 18 con 18 Int.

I thought about starting a Kensai in Bg2, then dualling, but instead played a fighter through BG and then Dualled at LV9. Kensai is very cool, but i like being able to wear bracers, helps my AC a bit

damocles 11-18-2000 05:09 AM

Ooops i had a 19 int

Memnoch 11-18-2000 07:06 AM

Uhh...Rikard, where did you get 83 from? I saw 18x4 = 72. He could have had 3 +3 = 78 which is doable. Silly, but doable.

Also, going all the way with a kensai will mean plenty of reloads as you die and die and die because your AC is going to be shit for the whole game, at least if you dual him you can buff him up with stoneskins and mirror image etc, mainly defensive combat spells. Only problem is when someone casts remove magic on you, you better be prepared to make your first few blows count. The kensai is just such a specialized class he needs people around to shield him from attack, unless you have the game unbalancing Cloak of Mirroring which essentially renders remove magic etc useless. Just memorize a ton of stoneskin, improved haste and timestop spells and you basically will dominate the game.

Arachnia Vandriel 11-18-2000 07:51 AM

A Kensai's AC is'nt that bad, they can wear robes you know (ie AC5 from robe of vecna or robe of archmagi), plus dex bonus, plus kensai bonus, plus weapon style bonus (if any), plus rings, cloaks, necklaces etc,

My kensai/mage is a 9/15 (at the mo) with an AC of about -6, which is about par for the rest of my tankers

plus with the robe of vecna and the amulet from the shadow thieves (the immune to drain, 1 bonus to casting speed, etc) you hardly ever get disrupted

hope this helps

Memnoch 11-18-2000 08:33 AM

Robe of Vecna is fine for kensai mages but pure kensai can't wear it. So really the lowest AC you can go down to is -1 if your dex is 19 and you wear a Cloak of Prot +2 and Ring of Prot +2.

*sighs* Another reason to dual class your kensai - to improve his AC.

Armisael 11-18-2000 09:43 AM

I use the same tactic with my fighter. Mirror image, stoneskin, bash bash bash. Only difference is, I've got bracers and a helm. (struts)

Arachnia Vandriel 11-18-2000 10:21 AM

But Kensai can use Ioun stones, so at least that's 1 slot not wasted

So my rangers, paladins + clerics have helmets while my kensai/mage and monk have ioun stones (whilst Jan has his own fashionable headgear)

Vlade 11-18-2000 10:46 AM

tried tenser transform yet??
tenser transform + a drow adamantium chain + cloak of sewers + ioun stone= -10AC
i tried a 9/16 kensai mage b4 and he waltz thru the LAST battle with Irenicus ALONE.

MidNightForce 11-18-2000 01:27 PM

Im only in chapter3 and my kensai only is lv 11-12
he has allready an ac of -4 which quite as good as my fighters
with the regenarating ring hes a killing machine (thaco -5)
of course is he weak in fights against more that 2 strong monsters
without help from party; but im acting always only with him:
enemy for enemy. i dont think, that a mage/kensai is so good,
because a kensai only get much more powerfull (of course in non magic combat)
Though im curious: can kensai lv 9/then mage reach the max lv of the mage?

Memnoch 11-18-2000 02:00 PM

Kensai can go up to L11 and still reach 17th level mage. That's why you have all these 17/11 kensai mages.

Kaliken 11-18-2000 05:13 PM

Memnoch,
Can you really go up to level 11 as a Kensai, because my friend calculated it out and said that if you did you max out as a mage at level 15. Which kind of sucks because i am a big fan of Simulacrum (sp?). Anyways enlight my poor soul.

Thanks
Kaliken

Memnoch 11-18-2000 05:46 PM

Actually I was wrong (on another post too)...Level 9 is when you should dual so you can get to Level 17. I was thinking of Swashbuckler...sorry...

I think i should *yawn* get some sleep...
