When yer a mage and use magic in Athkatla, them Cowled Wizards appear often. If you fight them each time and get XP, do they eventually go away? I'm really getting sick of them appearing after I've rested and cast contingency on myself in preparation for the next battle, only to be interrupted!

You can avoid the problem by buying a "license" to cast magic with the town limits. It only costs 5000 gp and is worth it. I can't remember the name of the building, but its in the government district on the upper right side of the map.

Jim 12-12-2001 04:16 PM

Well that's what you get for illegal use of magic :D

Always buy the licence from the government council of 6 building if you're planning to use magic, unless that is your looking for trouble!

I've heard that eventually, some cowled boss attacks you in the city after you've slaughtered many of them, and that he has a staff of the magi. Anyone else seen this??

Micah Foehammer 12-12-2001 04:19 PM

Haven't heard of that at all and haven't seen any reference to it happening on the Black Isle / Bioware boards .....

Cheers boys,

I know where to get it using the proper method, but have heard rumours that one of the cowled wizards also posesses one, I suppose in a similar fashion to the order of the radiant heart guy that helps with Bohdi posessing a Harbringer sword. It is probably total BS however, but was wondering if anyone else had heard of this.

Jim.

CmdChicken 12-12-2001 04:27 PM

If you fight them enough times they'll come once more and say

"Ewww your in big trouble now! We gots our biggest and bestest and baddest magey people and their gonna learn you good!" (Sort of ;) )

then....

Cast time stop
Cast Abi-Dahlzim's x3
Cast Comet x2

snigger

Note... May need ToB to cast magi mayhem like meeeee

Micah Foehammer 12-12-2001 04:34 PM

Jim,

I hadn't heard about the Harbringer sword ... (is my greed showing yet?) ...

you happen to remember the stats on it?

ULockit I Stealit 12-12-2001 04:40 PM

I have read about the biggest baddest magey eventually coming out and he does carry the Staff of the Magi.

Never got there myself because you have to get the Cowled ones like 10 times or so before he is summoned.

But after that it is free reign, you will never get bothered again, you saved 5000 and you got craploads of XP.

Cheers,

Dundee Slaytern 12-12-2001 04:47 PM

"They shall never take my gold... they shall die instead, for I'll be damned before I allow myself to submit to their ridiculous regulations. I am Odin Magnus, and I am a Sorcerer, and I shall be their educator... ..."

I never pay for the license... I kick their a**es until they finally realise that it is futile to fight me.

Cowled Wizard Boss Fight Spoiler( contains minor ToB spell spoilers too).

PS: They do not have the Staff of Magi. That is absolute rubbish, I have fought them many times already. They only drop gems, scrolls, potions, normal quarterstaffs and gold.

So there's a 5% chance per hit that your wounded and battered party members will be polished off by one of their own guys?

Gee, that sounds like an item **I** want in my party...

Yes, this is actually a really annoying sword. Even when the Paladin uses it it bursts occasionally (same odds as a critical hit) and decides that it's you that has attacked him and runs off hating your guts.

"Don't use such a damn silly sword then you silly man!!, it's not my fault :( "

No need to take it out on my party of ultimate badasses.

"NOOOO!!!! He's using that damn sword again!" screamed Milnar as he dived desperately towards Fooleer. Grabbing Fooleer's legs, he made an anxious plea, "Please... no."

"But the Orc must die!" roared Fooleer, and he swung the sword high in the air, ready to behead the unconsicious Orc on the ground. Milnar looked on weakly, when suddenly, there was a whistle in the air and Fooleer gasped.

"Tr... tre... treachery!" Fooleer muttered, as he collasped to the ground, an arrow stuck in the back of his head.

Turning around, Milnar saw Elehenar, the Elven Archer twiddling his thumbs nervously and biting his lower lip. Mumbling under his breath, he said, "Well, I'm not going to let him singe my hair again and put us in plaster casts for another month... ..."

Milnar nodded knowingly and holding Fooleer's sword, he tossed it aside in some ditch. Let some other fool party have it, he had had about enough injuries from it already.

;)

Kaleban 12-12-2001 05:25 PM

What kind of genius made a weapon like that? Is it cursed???

Isn't there a club or something in Soa or ToB that does the same thing? You'd think the programmers would make it so that the explosion only hurt ENEMIES of the user, but NNOOOOO....

Weird.

JR Jansen 12-13-2001 01:14 AM

That club you are referring to is the club of detonation. This, iirc, is a ToB item. And yes those things really suck. If i read something like this, it's time to give it to ribald and have him sell it to some other dumb@$$.

ehh scratch that, there's more spoilers here already then I will give..

In any case, while 5K gp is not a big amount, there's no way in Nine Hells I will pay to some Cowled Fools for casting some spells. I simply kill them all and case closed. And without a Sorcerer char, killed them last time with my berserker (and his party) and this time will do it with a Cavalier. I don't play men in dresses, real men wear plate mail :D

So yeah, kill 'em all. And they do not have the Staff of the Magi. They have their papers, rocks and sticks. OK, scrolls, gems and sticks.

sounds a bit like jan jansen made it eh!- completely pointless magic weapon. its a bit like the 2 handed +3 sword in bg that you loose controll when you use it and go bezerk.

Galdriel wovenmist 12-13-2001 10:11 AM

The best thing about it must be that ogres get turned to stone by it. Well... Nah. Sounds like a BG1 wpn for early starters VS ogres. You dont meet alot of Ogres in bg2 if im right. Well Ill be seeing ya.

Micah Foehammer 12-13-2001 10:28 AM

Thanks guys for the info on the sword .... sounds like using that item is a "double-edged" proposition.

There are definitely better swords in the game.
