What creature(s) have you crossed that you just can't stand fighting? Whether it's because they always run away, their battle tactics or their strength does not matter.

My least favorites are Djinni of the Blade. (Or any other Djinni on Ascension Peak. They are almost (if not completely) resistant to magic, and are pretty freaking tough.
I also hate Dreadmares. They cast turncoat all the time, and are constantly running away. And since they cast eye for an eye all the time, ranged magic does not work against them.

Loudhy 04-13-2004 12:36 AM

That's simple :

all kinds of unicorns.

PALSSONMANIA 04-13-2004 03:05 AM

yes i agree with with all the unicorns and those djinn on the peak suck i only beat them with this complicated initatae combat but so they are not in it (similar to the trick to get the diamond eyes in the barrow without doing the fight) and doing this to gte behind the big rocks and then running again to get close range where my hevay hitters tear them up.

i also hate scorcers because even with a ebony heume +3 plate all over lvl 7 element and magic screen they still manage to damage ppl with breath fire

also the crabs that attack at extended range

Dedzy 04-13-2004 03:32 AM

I have a distaste for all things with terrible experience and lots of hit points. Early on, this is Higardi Bandits and Juggernauts. Like you all said, unicorns in the swamp tend to kick my butt because I don't usually have Magic Screen by then. But later I don't mind them so much.

Mr Creosote 04-13-2004 04:03 AM

Plants.
I seem to run into them all the time every game.

PALSSONMANIA 04-13-2004 04:07 AM

yes jugganauts and the highway men ( bandits have around 16 hp as i recall)

plants used to piss me of in my first few time games but now i tend to have them pretty under wraps

dplax 04-13-2004 04:51 AM

Juggernauts and their kind. For their level they have way too many attacks.

Kakero 04-13-2004 04:57 AM

Rynjins, Stingrays, Unicorns and some more but i can't remember that name.

PALSSONMANIA 04-13-2004 06:08 AM

all the sea type creatures pissed me off till i put a alchemist in my party and had quicksand and that makes the whole water world and bayjinn still a challange but alot easier

Aelia Jusa 04-13-2004 04:42 PM

I agree with the juggernauts. Totally irritating - the kind where you can beat them easily but it's a long boring battle that's always the same . Also I hate deathsting apuses - again not too hard to kill but they have SOOOO many attacks per round that even with a full strength missle shield they still get enough hits through that one of your guys will die at least once during a battle. HATE Marten's Bluff! ;)

dplax 04-13-2004 05:16 PM

And if monsters have lots of attacks the combats take looooong. If only there was a way to have instant combat. *sighs*

Marathon 04-13-2004 05:38 PM

I have problems in Rapax Rift with combat initiating with Rapax that I can't yet get to (different levels of the walkway) and it takes forever to run away far enough to end combat mode. Of course, the samurai can still throw spells at me...

Aelia Jusa 04-13-2004 05:52 PM

Oh yes, Marathon! I had that problem at rapax rift in my last game. It took SO LONG to get away from them - and it happened about 3 times because I was trying to get the flame cell thingy and there was a whole heap of them on a walkway nearby that just wouldn't go away!

Satyyrn 04-13-2004 06:27 PM

The creatures that upset me the most, are psi sharks. Every game I have ever had has included alchimests, so of course I used quicksand on them, and obliterated them. Last night I was playing my first group without an alchimest, and the Psi Sharks tore me up!!!

instant battles one one thing i lovd about the super nintendo with earthbound was that when Ness reached high enough level not only would monsters run away from you before combat intiated but they would die instantly it was grand

Psyborg 04-14-2004 03:54 AM

The things one level above Depth Dwellers...I forget what they're called...*looks it up*

Depth Flayers! They suck completely. They get 3 attacks, and each attack hits like 3 different people! Or something like that, it's annoying, and it does a lot of damage too, and they can reach extended range to rip my Wizard a new one.

Deathsting Apuses (Api?) were a piece of cake my last time through. I played a party of all Valkyries =P Cheating death really took the sting out of the Apus' err...sting. Not that being stung was too much of a problem, since everyone gets a Guardian Angel during the first round. The Apuses drop off quickly when the party's six polearms get into range. I found the tougher crocodile types much harder, as they hit so hard (and often) that they easily took out Guardian Angels.

MasterPooBaa 04-14-2004 10:05 PM

Juggernaughts yes. just so long to beat them into submission.

Adamantine slimes too, though their sheer dmamge repelant nature makes them really good for weapons training.

annoying though if u just want to get somewhere with a minimum of fuss!
allways end up running out of stamina boosting spells!

Millions Knives 04-15-2004 09:55 PM

Anything that constantly runs away is undyingly annoying. Especially when you keep getting interrupted because your initiative is so low and *takes a five minute breather*
I also hate things that cast eye for an eye when you heavily rely on mind flay.

MasterPooBaa 04-15-2004 10:24 PM

another thing that annoys me...
having my party of 4 hybrids at level 30 getting AMBUSHED by 6 lev 5 higardi roges...

So i had to sit there for an entire round enduring their pinpricks.

Suffice to say next round was extreemly brief, consisting of a single Level 7 deathwish spell from my lord.
I didnt even bother looking at what loot they dropped.

DBear 04-15-2004 10:51 PM

The souldrinker on Ascension Peak, who kills half your party outright and turncoats the other half.

killerTeddy 05-14-2004 03:41 PM

I agree with juggernauts - you meet them often, fighting takes a long(!) time and is boring... one of the reasons why i would really like to try deathwish or something similar (haven't had a caster with level 7 spells yet)!
2nd worst are these stone crabs - a good reason to have someone with critical strike.

There are many critters I don't like, although the level you are at can determine the hassle factor. For example, the multiple attacks of millipedes drive me crazy but if I have a decent area spell like fireball they are gone in a round or two. Saying this, Juggernauts are avoided early on but by lev 10 or so I invite them to attack me (usually in a safe defensible location). This is because the battles are so long you can really build your combat and magic stats compared to most battles. By the time I get to Rynjin, Rift or AP I don't get too many beasties that raise the hackles. Even Souldrinker and Nessie are mere annoyances. If I try to get through the Mountain Wilderness or its dungeon at lev 12 I expect hard battles. Depends on how you play and when you get there!

SecretMaster 05-17-2004 02:43 PM

Juggernauts, any kind of plants.

Worst of all, wasps. Good XP in the beginning, but they are everywhere... everywhere!!

MasterPooBaa 05-17-2004 08:30 PM

Dont wasps not have a low fire resistance?
nothing a few fireballs wouldnt take care of.

Personally i dislike any creatures that dont move up close and personal... i like THEM comming to me so my chars with short range weapons can beat them.

those scorchers and crabs that stop at extended range are annoying.

Gadgeteer Tom 05-20-2004 05:09 PM

Tie between psi sharks and unicorn/dreadmares, they avoid getting close, are darn hard to silence too.
Unicorn types eventually can be paralyzed - then I prefer the others to run away. Unicorns also can be hurt with eye for an eye - while psi sharks have very high resistance to the spells they use - so eye for an eye is not so handy. But psi sharks often get within range of a tripleshot crossbow, and some hunter quarrls will eventually knock them out so I can get close enough to clobber 'em.
Don used to annoy me, but recently he shocked me by dying in round two of a Death cloud (which I just bought from him).
Tiny can be worth the money sometimes to have as an ally - otherwise I've always just ran for it (although on occasion I've waited till red dots close in before approaching - Tiny will ally if no discussion of fee has occurred - and I just run off and leave him with the baddies...

SkyRanger 05-31-2004 12:11 AM

I got to look forward to running into parties of Juggernauts (say 8 or 9 at a time) in quick succession along the Arnika-Trynton Road. Especially when I could get into one of those nooks and wipe em out in a single file line. Hehehe. I just had a Bard paralyze most of them and wacked em.

My LEAST favorite were, as seems to be a general concensus, the Unicorns. I managed to destroy a few Crystal and Adamant Unicorns by running up directly in front of them and hitting first, but I found that the Dreadmares were the most likely to rear and turn half my party against me. I started running away from them in the Swamp.

Someone mentioned problems with the Rapax Rift when they were trying to get the Staff of Ash from the fire cage. The first time I tried it, I too found that there were Samurais on the bridge above me. I finally hid under the bridge before they saw me, and rested (fortunately, nothing else spawned in to disturb my rest period). When I rested and left the cover of the bridge, all the Samurai were gone and I only had to face the Lava Lord and a couple minions. My Faerie Ninja paralyzed him with the Cane of Corpus and I whittled him down in short order.

Ziggurat 05-31-2004 09:24 AM

Sometimes you can get a lucky hit on the Lava Lord and paralyze or knock him out before he spawns. I sometimes run up to him to attack, other times I use Elemental Shield first.

If there are too many guys on the bridge, I reload and rest. Who wants to waste 20 minutes dodging arrows and taking spell damage?

Gadgeteer Tom 06-01-2004 04:52 PM

OK, you brought up those opponents on bridges. What is annoying about them (also when I'm on bridge and they are below) is inablilty to direct 'area' spells (eg;fireball) and 'proximity' spells (eg;shrill sound) - at least Silence and Freeze spells don't need to be aimed...

Krull 06-02-2004 07:02 AM

I agree with whoever it was in a similar thread sometime ago, and that was that the least favourite creatures are Higardi, Trynnie and Umpani patrols. Yes, I know they help low end parties while they are still weak but facing hordes of various plants and seekers, with Trynnies getting in the way is so irritable when your party doesn't actually need the help.

Don't get me started on battles where the Umpani base troopers join in, that does make me tear my hair out. You have time to read 'War and Peace' while waiting for your move.

MasterPooBaa 06-02-2004 08:10 PM

yep. umpani joining the battle, doing bugger all damage, getting in the way of YOUR ranged weapons and generally making a short battle take 3 times longer.

Same with the trynnie patrols. Useless doods, except possibly the champions and they allways block the walkways and drag my party along as i try to pass them.

Once ive done all the necessary trynne quests i take GREAT delight in returning to the tree and obliterating every trynnie i see with deathclouds and mindflays.
