What's your biggest disappointment regarding Wizardry 8?
I'm not trying to denigrate the game. It's one of my favorite games of all time. But there were things I was hoping for that didn't happen. I think everybody must have something they wanted and didn't get. My biggest disappointment: I SO wanted to recruit a Rattkin. Maybe I should try to find Wizards and Warriors. Although I don't think it works in XP [ 02-22-2004, 07:57 PM: Message edited by: Dang ] |
my biggest disappointment was all the stuff they couldn't finish before they had to quit.
|
I had no problems with unfinished quests, because IMO in a "real" gameworld there must be something you don't need or can't do.
My biggest disappointment is, that you cannot enter some areas ( especially underwater areas ). When I first found the scuba gear, I immidiatly ran to the monastery to dive into that unaccessable water area. Result: |
The fact the game isn't moddable. It's an excellent game as it is, and my favourite of the genre, but I just love modding games, I feel it adds a lot to them.
|
Best thing was killin the Dark Savant after soo many years of waiting (like 10 years since Crusaders?)
Worst thing is the fact that there will be no more Wizardry *cry* and maybe that there is no second Boomerang Shuriken for my Ninja's Offhand.. |
Definitely for me was a "Hall of Gorrors" ype location as in W6 and W7.
Kept me going for years in W7 trying to kill two Beasts of 1000 Eyes on Expert. |
Hmm.. actually, come to think of it, the fact that you can't continue playing the game after it ends. It's only a minor thing though, it doesn't ruin that game at all.
|
I was disappointed with the limits and finality of the game, which basically means... GIVE ME MORE! So I guess I'm only sorry that there isn't more of it, since it's so darn good. With so many games of this genre delving into mods, multiplayer, expansions etc., I can't help wishing Wiz8 was one of them. [sighs]

Multiplayer I couldn't care less about, but mods and expansions are always good IMO.
|
Agree with Scatter: all those unfinished mysterious things in the game. It would have made Wiz 8 longer, thus more playing time and more to do. Once you know your way around, the game is too short.

yo dang you most certainly can play w+w on xp. if you have any problems with it go to its forum on this site and the people there will be glad to help you they sure did for me.
they stuck by me through all my problems until they got it up and running for me so give them a try cant hurt |
Awesome JOE030303! Thanks for the hint!

I was annoyed by the 'level cap' type deal for monsters in certain areas. For example, in Arnika-Trynton road, I have peaked at juggernauts and that's all we come across now, which gets boring. I think it would have been better if all areas could improve their monsters with the level of the group.
Also I found the lack of variety of traps in chests irritating too. There's a lovely big list of traps but dagger scatter and poison darts are vastly overrepresented, which gets monotonous. |
Well, if you're bored by the Juggernauts, it's obviously time to move on to a more exciting area ;)

The incompleteness of the game is a disappointment (although I'm glad they managed to get it out on the market at all), but the biggest single disappointment has to be the final confrontation with the Savant. It's never been a contest, no matter what the composition of my party.
|
The Savant can be hard if you face him at level 20.
Like many, my disappointment is the unfinnished quests. It would be cool if you could rob the bank and be rewarded by Rattus. |
THIS NEEDS A HUGE SPOILER TAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sigh, I can't find one bad thing about this game. Given the circumstances, I'm happy this game got into the market. The unfinished quests, I'm not sure if anyone understands the circumstances or not. Wiz8 was on the market for ages, like 1995 or so. They were running low on funding and buyers to sell internationally. So, they were nearing the end, and they couldn't wait any longer, money, people, so they had to sell. Thats why they are not on par with societies expectations for great graphics. As for continuing the game after you beat the D.S., just look on the sticky thread of great hints. Game not being moddable. Sirtech doesn't float that way. I'll agree with Jazzybelle. Lastly, don't despair. Wiz9 could be coming soon. I know that interview on RPGdot said a lot, god knows its been overposted on this forum. But, look at some other facts will you. That news article was posted for starters. Secondly, just with Bane of the Cosmic Forge and Crusaders of the Dark Savant, there are multiple endings that have endgame saves. Now, correct me if i am wrong, but practically every game i have beaten and they make an endgame save, there is some form of expansion or new game where you can import. Thirdly, the most obvious thing that gets you thinking. The Sirtech official website and Wiz8 tech help forum was down for over a year. If sirtech was dead, why go back and spend hours and hours on repairing the site and fixing their homepage? THere was or maybe still is people working in Sirtech. I do believe Linda Currie was intending and may have been trying to get Wiz9, but whether they are working on it now or not is debatable. |
Biggest disappointment:
Not having keyboard shortcuts for the character inventory page. |
"Also I found the lack of variety of traps in chests irritating too. There's a lovely big list of traps but dagger scatter and poison darts are vastly overrepresented, which gets monotonous."
Yeah, I also felt the more punishing traps didn't show up enough. Though ***SPOILER*** setting off a curse trap and finding 2-3 of your guys dead "Curse? I thought I was just gonna get hexed!" on IronMan gave me a bit of respect for the traps. But there are some traps that seem silly, like Rune of Madness. (I think that's what it's called...) All it has ever done is make some of my party members insane. How is that gonna hurt me unless I decide to open chests with enemies around? And SecretMaster, I think a lot of us realize that we are lucky W8 came out at all, and that some of the loose ends had to be left loose. But that doesn't mean it isn't disappointing! Funny thing is, there were some things I never even considered "unfinished" before coming to this board. For example, ***DoubleMcSpoiler w/ Cheese***......................................... I never thought Rattus' bank job was unfinished. I just thought it was giving you a hint that the bank could be robbed. Lots of things that seem easy and de rigeur now were totally out of my range when I first started playing. The Chapel (or whatever you call it) w/ the Sorceress Queen seemed virtually impossible my first time around, but now, knowing what coming, I can beat it pretty regularly. |
hmmmm biggest dissapointments...
Yes the lack of chest trap variety. definately an issue. The lack of damage done with spells once you regularly fight med-high level monsters. Whats the point of all those offensive spells really when they do jack all damage? The only ones i really use are the spells that linger... firestorm, draining cloud, toxic cloud etc... just to keep the enemies occupied. |
Yeah, things are a lot different from W7. I remember when I thought the Alchemist stunk until I found out how a high level cloud spell could turn the tide of battle. I even remember reading somebody telling about how their whole party had been killed/incapacitated but the Alchemist's cloud spells killed the monsters, and the party lived. I have had an opposite experience from you, MasterPooBaa, in that I almost never relie on lingering spells.

That's easy. I knew I had to save the planet from the bomb in Arnika but this time around I didn't want to spend much time in Rapax Land.
I went to AP early, set a portal near the Life Temple and one near the Cosmic Circle Temple--actually near the Vipers. I hoped to skip the Rift, the Templar/Al-Sedexus stuff, and the final big fight with the Prince and his friends. Well, much to my chagrin, when I backtracked to the portal to the castle the doors were closed--you need to come from the castle first!! You can skip some areas but there's no skipping all of the Rapax stuff. I will be able to portal around the Prince is all. |
It's not really necessary to become a Templar if you go to the Peak early and set a portal past the landslide point. However, there is no getting around the need for going through the Rift and into the castle to reach the tower.
