I an just wondering what would be the best weapons to use in their off hands.

First off I have a monk, so nothing needed.
Next there is a Rogue, so I’m not to sure what to is best to keep the back stab bonus.
Ninja, so I’ll use CoC, and I guess spirit dagger, but not 100% sure about that.
Bishop will be using magic, so must likely sling and Diamond Eyes and a shield.

That’s what I’m thinking so far

ferro287 02-02-2004 03:29 AM

Bishop can't learn dual, so he'll be better off with a shield. You might think about handing Diamond eyes to someone else as a secondary weapon though. Not Ninja (I'd go for Winterwand/Rod of sprites as staff&wand as well(if dagger is high maybe canezou)) or Rogue (weapon of choice would be thieves dagger imho).

If you're unsure, you can view the combat and weapon modifiers in the inventory screen and switch between different weapons to see the effects. If your ninja's not used to daggers you'll see the dramatic drop in the CoC stats.

Loudhy 02-02-2004 04:02 AM

My rogue ( Fairie ) usually has two thieves daggers. They work fine in the secondary slot. Because I max out speed and dext first , he got many attacks and so he has lots of critical hits with this weapon.

Target 02-02-2004 04:35 AM

I am quite tempted to give my Rogue Bloodlust early in the game, do I still get the backstabb bonus with that?

Loudhy 02-02-2004 04:48 AM

I once tried that. IIRC it works with Backstabbing but it is not usable as secondary weapon.

Rogues get backstab damage with any bladed weapon they can equip, be it sword or dagger. Bloodlust will give you the usual 2x on a hit plus one additional for berserk mode, making it 3x in all. A potent weapon in the hands of a strong rogue.

Some players like a combo of Thieves Dagger/Stiletto, or two Thieves Daggers, but you lose missile weapons, just as with Bloodlust. Two stilettos is a possibility, and would allow you to use a bow or sling for distance attacks. Crock usually has stilettos for sale.

I though at least one of my party should be able to use a sword on the off chance I got lucky and found the light sword.

Nightowl2 02-02-2004 02:09 PM

The light sword is a very off chance, and many players never see it in the game. Most try to get it from the buccs underwater in the Bayjin Shallows, and it usually takes a lot of restoring. It IS a very nice sword, good damage and only one hand needed.

It's also been known to turn up in the chest in the Rynjin hut, but that is a more difficult proposition, as the chest contents are set when you enter Bayjin itself (from either land or water). If you really want to try for it, the pirates are probably the best bet.

ferro287 02-02-2004 02:51 PM

Just to throw in a different opinion, i'd think it's easier from the chest, since the buccs need sooooooo many restores (unless you don't need it, in which case it'll turn up immediately ;) )

20 reloads for the chest, or 150 for the buccs, your choice.

Sand Crabs. Sentries and maybe thralls at entrance. Turn Right and run along the beach until you can go between a boulder and the edge of the hill, turn left into the draw there and follow the crease in the cliff on up to the sprite path. You will see the hut you want right below, and if you walk down the first little bit and start running on the way downhill, you can get to and around the hut to open the door wbefore anything engages you. Squeeze past the Sentry on your left, and back into the corner next to the doorjamb to fight the Sentry. This will suffice to make any other random critters wander off after you've killed the Sentry, just wait a bit. Then close the door to work on the chest.

ferro287 02-03-2004 03:06 AM

Unless you're coming from Umpani country. Then it would only the empath, and wait a bit (xray). Then Sentry as you said. Slightly quicker imho (but harder to get to).

Is that sword really that good? not ever having seen it I don't know. Does it compair with any other sword?

Kylospylon 02-04-2004 07:37 AM

FIRE is your friend if you want quick runs to the chest in Bayjin, get lots of FIRE. ;)

BANISH is your friend if you want to play with Buccaneers, get lots of BANISH. ;)

PATIENCE is your friend if you want to see a Light Sword, get lots of PATIENCE. ;)

BTW - Light Sword = best sword, rivaled only by Muramasa and Excaliber. IMO

Target 02-04-2004 07:50 AM

What are Muramasa and Excaliber like, are they 2 handed, can only be used be certian classes?
and are they easy to find?

Wereboar 02-04-2004 10:44 AM

Excalibur - 2 handed, IIRC usable by fighter, lord and valkyrie. Rare in the chest behind nessie. I think i found it twice, but never used it, since i had only one character that could use it, and prefered dual wield.

Marumasa Blade - 1 handed, samurai only. About 1/3 chance in queens chest. Like bushido blade, with bigger damage and IIRC 10% critical hit.

Nightowl2 02-04-2004 11:29 AM

Some weapon stats for comparison:

Light Sword - 1H weapon, usable by Fighter, Lord, Valkyrie, Ranger, Samurai, Ninja, Rogue, Bard, and Gadgeteer, of any race, including Faerie. 5-40 damage, +6 to hit, +7 initiative, 10% kill chance, double damage vs. androids.

Muramasa Blade - 1H weapon, usable by Samurai only, any race, including faerie. 7-28 damage, +4 to hit, +5 initiative, 15% kill chance.

Excaliber - 2H weapon, usable by Fighter, Lord, Valkyrie, any race but faerie. 10-45 damage, +4 to hit, -5 initiative, 25% hex chance, 5% kill chance, HP regen +1. Lightning (6) variable charges.

Avenger - 2H weapon, Fighter, Lord, Valkyrie, any race but Faerie. 11-38 damage, +3 to hit, +2 initiative, 10% kill chance, Lightning (6) variable charges.

Blades of Aesir (axe) - 2H weapon, usable by Fighter, Lord, Valkyrie and Ranger, any race but Faerie. 5-35 damage, +2 to hit, -4 inititiative, 5% kill chance, 5% KO chance, Iceball (5) variable charges.

The Aesir and the Muramasa have turned up on occasion in the Rapax Queen's chest. Avenger appeared once or twice in the Crypt Keeper's chest. Excaliber showed in Nessie's chest, and the Light Sword in Bayjin. Your mileage may vary ;)

ferro287 02-04-2004 02:40 PM

Excaliber can be found in Rapax Queens chest as well. The Avenger has only Lightning (5) (max 12), Excaliber lightning (6) (max 25).

Nightowl2 02-04-2004 02:54 PM

Gaah. I have it written down right here that the Avenger has Lightning (5); dunno how it became 6. Must have been the keyboard ;)

Nightowl2

P.S. They make the keys too close together! ;)

Glad I'm not the only one to have a 'dodgy' keyboard!! ;)

Another question about secondaries - I have an Enchanted Wakasashi and a Nunchaka for possible use by my ninja. They are rated identical in HP range, to hit and initiative. The E-Wak has 2% kill and the Nun has 15% knockout, yet the E-wak is priced at 25x the Nun. I want the money for another robe but wonder if the slim kill % is worth it. Is that little 2% magnified somehow by the ninja's critical hit ability? An unconscious foe is nearly as good as dead, IMO.

Nightowl2 02-04-2004 08:34 PM

Never thought the E-Wak was all that good myself. You might be better off with a second nunchaka with the higher KO chance plus whatever crit ability your ninja has at the moment.

Nightowl2

ferro287 02-05-2004 02:35 AM

It might make a difference to know which primary weapon your ninja wields. if it's nunchaku obviously a 2nd one would be better, with bushido it's a different thing.

Scatter 02-05-2004 03:11 AM

I like Bushido and Nunchaku as a pair for Ninja. There will be some difference in you learning curve with unlike weapons, but i find mine to get over that fairly quickly.
For Sam, however, the Sword bonus sways me in favor of the E Wak.

Ziggurat 02-05-2004 06:20 PM

I found the E-wak has a better "fight rating" by one unit so am using it. Better sword skill over mace/flail, I suppose. Kept the Nun, JIC. She was using the Bushido but just got the Cane of Corpus and will be using it tonight. Her best weapon skill is sword (~65)followed by mace (~45) which is closely followed by wand (~40). Will ask about fight ratings in another thread.

babar 02-05-2004 10:14 PM

does anybody run a samurai with a non-sword in the off hand? I'm thinking about having one train daggers (and give her the Canezou), instead of using the enchanted wasabi-knocker. If it weren't for the sword bonus, I'd think that a dual dagger samurai might be even better (assuming you bump up speed and dex, instead of strength).

Ziggurat 02-06-2004 01:01 AM

I just got the Sai and Ninjato from a chest at the Buccaneers. Both are ninja-only daggers with 5% kill and can be used as secondary. Too bad the ninja has exactly 0 pts in dagger!

Scatter 02-06-2004 01:18 AM

i think Sams don't get Lightning Strike with anything other than Sword.
(edited kuzz i replied to someone on the last page, not directly above)
