I have absolutely no more RPG's to play (other than classics) i was thinkin about buying Wizardry 8. Could someone tell me if i should get it or compare it to other CRPG's?

Bozos of Bones 11-02-2003 11:54 AM

What I'd like to know is it's minimal configuration. Can I run it at my Duron 800, 128 MB RAM, Voodoo 3 3000 w/ 16 MB?

Starfire 11-02-2003 12:47 PM

Bozo of bone: I am running wizardry 8 on a 2.4 ghz amd athlon with only 256 ram and it runs fine. You might experience a bit of lagging in certain parts of the game due to only having 128 ram but other than that it should run ok.

Dalamar: I would definitely recommend getting wizardry 8 it's an awsome game. My favorite RPG to date. It has loads of potential for replayability. You can run so many different types of parties and parties based on themes etc. Everytime I replay I find items or side quests that I have missed with previous parties. The ability to build your party members which ever way appeals to you is one of my favorite parts of the game. At level ups, the player is the one whom must choose what stat attributes and skills to raise, so you can do experimenting to see what effects your choices make on your party members.

I don't want to say too much and spoil any surprises for you, if you have more specific questions about the game and gameplay post again and many of us will be more than happy to answer your questions.

Yeah, Dalamar, grab it !!!

As for the minimal configuration, Bozos, I've been playing it on a Celeron 800 with 128 RAM and a 8 MB Video card, it'd definitely ok (I did so for one year, i.e. I really did a long-term-check on this ). Expect to wait a bit when loading saved games or trying to look at the automap for the first time you visit an area, and of course you probably can't see ALL the graphical stuff, but in my eyes that doesn't hurt this game the tiniest bit. There is a demo available for download, maybe you want to look at that first...

Cheers

bozo - i played for a year on an old p2 laptop with 32 mb ram and an 8mb graphics card. i found some frustration with slow graphics updates in some polygon-intensive areas of the wiz 8 world, but not enough to make me quit.

i then updated my lappie to a 2.0g p4 with 256mb ram and a 32mb nvidia graphics card and have had no problems. i suspect it's the graphics card that makes the most difference (because at the same time we upgraded the graphics card on my wife's machine and she experience similar improvement).

dalamar - i would concur with pyrates and starfire 100%. there are no perfect rpg games out there, and to some extent choosing a most preferred one will have a lot to do with the type of game you like to play.

wiz 8 strengths - easy to use, intuitive interface. fully customisable, player controlled character development. with 11 classes, 14 races, and 6 party slots, there is not only lots of scope for truly role-playing a theme but also tons of replayability possible. the character development system is subtle and complex, lending itself to realism. the world is big, the plot and sideplots challenging. the monsters auto-level to keep you from getting bored, so there's always a challenge (but dont take that to mean it never gets easy - some areas are capped so that you can breeze through after you've gained enough experience and if you develop your party right, you can be high powered for your level). it's a first-person, real time point of view during normal exploration, but during combat it goes to turn-based (or, to a more continuous flow if the player chooses).

weaknesses - well, the graphics are a bit dated, a bit polygonal. the weapon system has limitations (but not that will notice until you've played about a dozen times), and combat, because it is turn-based with multiple participants on each side, can be a bit slow. but all in all these are minor gripes and grossly outweighed by the positives.

if you commit yourself to a couple of hours of trial, i can almost guarantee you'll be hooked!

The game runs just fine on an Athlon 600 with 128 RAM and a 16 Meg Voodoo 3 card. Loading saves is a trifle slow sometims, but otherwise no problems. With your system, you should be fine.

Good. Thanks all guys. I'll get a new PC for X-mas (I want to brag a bit: Athlon 2500+ Barton, 512 MB PC 2700, ASUS Radeon 9600 XT, ASUS A7N8X-X 400, 120 GB Barracuda 8mb cache and offcourse, Zalman) so I want to play something I can support untill then. Think I'll be able to beat it in the given time?
NOW ACCEPTING BETS!

I'm not the betting type, but you can finish the game in two months, depending on how many hours you want to put in and how much you enjoy savoring the game. My guess is the game can vary from 80 to 150 hours depending on your style. It IS the best RPG out there at this time, IMO.

Dalamar Stormcrow 11-02-2003 09:26 PM

Thanks for the input, but can you compare it to a game?

Starfire 11-02-2003 09:42 PM

Dalamar, what sort of comparisons are you looking for? Perhaps if you give some examples of what sort of RPG's you enjoy we can try to give some comparisons to other games

Ziggurat 11-02-2003 09:57 PM

Eye of the Beholder is a good comparison, not sure how far back you go. You have a party of adventurers which you choose. You gain skills, armor and gold as you explore. Now, if we compare it to games out there now... I'm thinking. Um, still thinking. It's like Morrowind with a group and not nearly as tedious. OK, I give up. I'm not sure how to compare it if you haven't tried earlier Wizardry or Might and Magic games. It really goes back to Dungeons and Dragons, but they have modified them quite a bit. It is an acquired taste.

zig's right. although the quests and balance of combat and quests/plot are comparable to a number of games, wiz 8 is unique.

for me, it's the character system sets wiz 8 apart. the best thing i can think of is to call it old-school, but with all the advantages of having a computer do calculations on a system that's suprisingly subtle, balanced, and complex.

geez, this is like trying to identify the sound of a new band that no one's ever heard of. "it's like a cross between bob marley and led zeppelin with an elvis impersonator singing..."

Wolfie 11-03-2003 04:37 AM

There is a demo available from the Wizardry 8 web site, it's about 148Mb, so a bit hefty if you've on a 56Kbit modem, if you're really not sure, this is the best way to make sure.

Personally, can't recommend any other game more highly than Wiz8 to any serious CRPG player.

One complaint that many people have about it with a system like yours is extremely long load times.

It is a great game. Its in my top three definitely, maybe number one.

Not perfect. But full of content and challenge. Extremely well balanced and worked out.

Some of the graphics are very old school, sprites. Some look almost like a modern day game.

dplax 11-03-2003 07:40 AM

I would definitely recommend getting it. Since I bought the game I've only played one other game, and that one wasn't for too long.

wildspear 11-03-2003 04:05 PM

I'm new at this game and so far I can't stop playing.

Dalamar Stormcrow 11-03-2003 05:04 PM

i loved eye of the beholder, one of the most fun games. Not a great ending. doesnt it end by dumping you into DOS? :D anyway........ I heard battle sequence wasnt fun at all, ruins of myth drannor like. I never wanna go through that again...
