What's with the Enlightened Spirit on AP? She is level 36 and never casts a spell. She just runs up and gets killed. I would imagine a lev 36 spell caster would be pretty dangerous. There are a few more like that, some of the Savant humanoids and most of the android slasher types are wimpy when you get anywhere near their levels. Anyone have a theory? Did they weaken the game to protect the non-hardcore players?

i would add the observation that a number of monsters are worth a disproportionate amount of experience relative to their increased threat. for example, the threat difference between savant troopers and savant drones is laughable, yet the drones are worth more than twice as much each. i assume this is by virtue of having a ranged attack which has a chance to paralyse.

similarly, vampire bats, which drain, are worth a ridiculous amount of experience relative to how few hitpoints they have (and therefore how easy to kill they are).

so, perhaps if you dont have a strong ranged attack to eliminate her quickly, the enlightened spirit closes and does some serious draining in melee? remember some of the higardi spirits dont cast spells, but close and *touch* you.

if you have a party near there who hasnt wiped her out, let her close and see what happens. (notice i'm volunteering you for this duty...)

Thanks, Sultan. Her main skill was drain stamina (I think). Prob paralysis or drain if she got you.

You are right about the rest. Maybe they made the guys in Arnika a higher XP payoff so you can level up faster in a "safe" place. Also, the monsters in the training at Mt.G weren't hard except for the last one, didn't seem to match your lev like the rest of the game. Fixed. I guess that was planned. If you tried it too early they were hard.

Many of the rest of the "too easy for their level" monsters probably do less damage later on in the game because you are so buffed. But if you are lev 20 and they are 30+ wouldn't you expect more?

Would have been a real challenge to run into a lev 30+ human-type spell caster. I guess some of the other critters on AP do that!

You obviosly havent run into 5 Diamond Unicorns!!!

Ziggurat 09-20-2003 02:06 AM

Ran into 3 diamond unicorns once. 5 is ridiculous. They were hard!

Rezdude03 09-20-2003 11:06 AM

oh yeah. especially if they rear. TURNCOAT!!!!!

Loudhy 09-22-2003 12:37 AM

I never fought Diamond Unicorns. I met Nightmares and Dreadmares in the swamp
and I hadn't enough patience to fight them because they always run after they
reared.
How can you win against those Diamond Unicorns, especially if there are 5 of
them ?

rbeane1 09-22-2003 08:35 AM

I didnt win I ran!!! only after they turncoated everyone in my party!
once one recovered I ran my ass off!

Hit them. Hit them again. Hit them hard.
And try to not be affected by their Quicksand spells.
IIRC they have an high AC, and cast body of stone on top of it (about 75% damage resistance, it seems)

Ziggurat 09-22-2003 06:23 PM

Wereboar is correct. You have to have all protections at max and then melee them to death while constantly healing. I think there were many reloads on that one. I may have cast an Elemental to distract them, but that is dubious because of the high lev magic attacks. And they didn't run like the rest of the equines do. (Actually, the first one stands their ground and attacks while the rest run away in the Swamp).

i cant remember meeting diamong unicorns on the peak, but i have met some high-level unicorns (crystal?) and had a lot of luck getting instant kills with siege arbalest/lightning bolts on fighter/rogue/bard types with 30-50 in bow while the spellcasting types are getting the shields up.

Rezdude03 09-23-2003 04:39 PM

well if you havnt found them, they lurk right in front of the DD temple.

these suckers can also rear from a distance so just move, slash, and hope for the best. have some people equip with granite rings to resist quicksand. its like nessie trying to swallow you. DONT BE AFRAID TO TAKE CHANCES!

sultan 09-24-2003 07:41 PM

i guess i have seen them, then. i thought they were crystal, not diamond though. those are definitely the ones i've had heaps of luck shooting down with crossbows.

notably, a five-man party of mine including fighter, lord, valk, bard, all shooting siege arbalest/lightning bolt with 4 shots (2 attacks x 2 arrows) pretty much shredded anything at a distance. but to conserve ammo we'll often close and finish with excalibur, the mauler, fang, and dread spear. the poor bishop is mostly left "cheering" (buff, heal, check watch, yawn, stretch) from the back.

Hi all,

my first response at all. Hope it will help (probably not, because all of them who already met those Diamond Unicorns know how to deal with them )
But a minor Tip: u see them, react before engaging: take the "wrong" weapons for your melee members: hand and feet for fighters, rangers, shorts word for ninja and so on. they will be turncoated, but wont do much harm. the rest of the fight let the magic do

Ziggurat 09-27-2003 09:27 PM

Thanks, Uwe. Good advice. You are welcome here.
