Im gonna start a BG2 + ToB game using an evil fighter/thief, and the 3 evil characters (ill also add the 4th one that appears in ToB). I dont know if i should use a multi fighter/thief or a kensai dualed to thief, what are your opinions ?

Sir Exxon 12-08-2001 07:02 AM

I think maybe kensai dualled to a thief, cause the kensai have some good bonuses.

see ya!

Dundee Slaytern 12-08-2001 09:34 AM

Hmmmm... both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Kensai->Thieves have Kai, an AC bonus and are able to grandmaster in their weapon of choice.

Fighter/Thieves can share from both the Fighter and Thief's high level ability pool.

I am partial to the Kensai->Thieves though.

Kai + Backstab + STR + ToB Quarterstaff = Woah...

Mitro Jellywadder 12-08-2001 10:45 AM

If you're going for pure power, go with the kensai dualed to thief. With three other members it won't be hard to protect him while he catches up.

The best benefit for having a multi-class is the access to both high level abilities in ToB. Honestly, you wouldn't go wrong either way.

Lord Ludtke 12-08-2001 11:56 AM

I went with the elven f/t version and it is quite a powerful creature. You only get 2 prof points for weapons and you should carry around some studded leather to do thieving stuff, but everything else
is open.

Start with lockpicka and detect trap. Work on the others later, cause remember, with multi you keep getting better and better in both classes.

SixOfSpades 12-08-2001 01:37 PM

Are you taking Jan along for the ride as well, Ertai? (I think about 90% of the people here do....)

An Elven Fighter/Thief would definitely kick some serious mayhem. Just think Coran, even without that 3rd star in Bow, and you're set.

On the other hand, a Kensai->Thief could be murder. You've got Korgan and his hitpoints out in front to start the fight, and a Steathed naked Kensai running up from behind to finish the fight.

Can a Kensai wear Bracers if they don't affect his ACor other defenses?

With Use Any Item, why not? ;)

Eldoran 12-09-2001 12:38 AM

Just to add my 2 bits, even though its pretty much been covered... ;)

Kensai -> Thief definately has the advantage in power, mostly because of the loss of kensai penalties to use any item.

Probibly crossing over to Thief from Kensai at 16 or 20 would be best, but you would have to ask the Kensai->Thief experts...

I myself would probibly use F/T because I dislike being human :D , and the switch over point while dualing at a higher level is annoying... But shouldn't be so bad if you are going with only 3 others through SoA.

Good Luck

P.S. Try CE, since Quasits are the most fun to abuse... They deserve it ;)

robertthebard 12-09-2001 01:10 AM

I'm leaning towards the dual class. Too many bonuses from the Kensai to really ignore. But you can't backstab with a quarterstaff, as it is a blunt weapon. But a Grandmaster Longsword+3 backstab, now that's living, or not, depending on which end of the stab you're on.

Kingenigma 12-09-2001 02:11 AM

As for multiclass, try halflings. They have great bonuses too.

Xanthul 12-09-2001 10:26 AM

Thanks for the replies . I still dont know what to do, id like to be a kensai dualed but i dont like humans a lot neither. Anyway i think i will finally use this, so id like to know at what level should i dual.

Sir Exxon 12-09-2001 10:32 AM

I say 12 or 13.

see ya!

Lucre 12-09-2001 11:11 AM

I would say level 13, but straight after you dual go to the thief stronghold and pck those locks for EXP.

Jim 12-09-2001 11:22 AM

quote:
But you can't backstab with a quarterstaff, as it is a blunt weapon

You can backstab with a particular staff in ToB which is what Dundee's getting at. It makes a mess!

Dual a kensai to thief at lvl 13 so you can grandmaster, get attacks from lvls 7 and 13, get bonus +4 to hit, +4 damage, -3 speed factor and 3 KAI abilities. Grandmaster in 2-handed swords and use a particually powerful sword designed for Paladins when you use any item.

I wouldn't recommend dualling at level 20 because you'll be waiting *ages* for those fighting skills, especially if your having a few party members to split the XP

Eldoran 12-09-2001 06:09 PM

Hehe I guess not Jim... Yeah 13 is more realistic.

I would have your party members wait for you while you go through the shadowthieves warehouse, so you can keep all that yummy exp for yourself... Hmm and good luck

Norbane 12-09-2001 10:41 PM

If you dual from a Kensai, will you be able to wear armor when the thief level surpasses the kensai?

Deja Vu.

With Use Any Item, why not? ;)

Lord Ludtke 12-10-2001 01:39 AM

When EXACTLY do you get Use Any Item? Is it a level thing or is it a ToB thing? Can you use just 1 item of your choice that is not normally allowed, or can you stack him?

I have been hearing alot about this skill, but it hasn't come up in my game yet.

Dundee Slaytern 12-10-2001 01:53 AM

Use Any Item is a ToB special ability and removes all class and alignment restrictions from items.

Assuming that you dualled at level 13, you can get it at level 18 on your Thief side.

You start getting high level abilities when you level up and your current total combined Xp is 3,000,000+

Jerhal 12-10-2001 03:05 AM

Is use any item a fighter ability at high level or is it just a Kensai ability?

Lord Ludtke 12-10-2001 03:07 AM

Nan, I didn't do any dualing it was for my assassin. He is level 18 now and just got x6 backstab, killed firkragg with traps and I would love to use either of those items you get.

I probably won't get ToB until I finish this game, and since I have the cap removed do I get the abilities retroactively?

Just for fun, what does a high level assassin go around wearing these days?

Dundee Slaytern 12-10-2001 06:01 AM

Use Any Item is a Thief high level ability, and you need ToB installed to get it.

Xanthul 12-10-2001 08:31 AM

OK, i created my female kensai to be dualed to thief. I gave her proficiencies with 2H-swords, and when i start getting more proficiencies ill put them on katanas or long swords, for backstabbing purposes (i think i cant backstab with a 2HS right?). The thing i love most on her is her portrait :D , its a very cool portrait of a beautiful female, with a robe and a big two handed sword, ideal for this character (ive used shadowkeeper to give her mage aspect ). And well, when i get the famous Use Any Item... scary.

Thanks a lot for your help !!

can anyone help me build a elf archer?

Lucre 12-10-2001 03:08 PM

Its not that hard, just get a high strength bonus, high dex and high con. Specialise in Long Bow and use Composite long bows. Simple.

Hi Ertai!

My evil half-orc multi F/T is rocking SoA right now. With the baldurdash patches he'll be able to romance the one worthy mate for an evildoer, and his 19 strength adds considerably to his backstabbing. Later in the game he's going to enjoy using both Greater Whirlwinds and Spike Traps.

One thing I just thought of: he's going to get up to 5 attacks per round without using any whirlwind stuff. That high number of attacks means that his Assassination power will be immense, perhaps even worth taking!

Whichever route you take, enjoy your fighter/thief! They're some of the most fun playing in the game.
