I keep on reading how hard beating nessie is.
I was looking forward to this as ive only had a handfull of challenges so far. I was on my way following some of the umpani quests and i fell into nessie's den. I Was prepared enough for a good battle but not for a boss type battle as i assumed Nessie would be. But Nessie was so easy, i killed her in about 4 rounds, no one died. Dissapointed big time. Ihad many harder fights in the game so far. the fight before nessie was way harder. 5 Psi Sharks and 1 omega Shark. It took me like 12 rounds on that fight against the damn sharks. Luckily now my priest just got sane mind so fighteng the sharks wont be so hard anymore. Ohh P.S. Does anyone now where i can find the giants sword for my mook ranger. |
I killed nessie at the lvl of 12.. with a couple of superman potions, it wasn't all that difficult.
About the sword.. I've gotten 3-4 of those, and I've sold every single one.. I don't have a sword-wielding mook, only a spear-mook, so they were useless to me. I didn't find them in chests, I found them on monsters. I don't remember which monsters, though (a lot of help _I_ am) |
Frosty:
Some people have trouble because they dont know any tactics for Nessie type mobs. Some just rush in un-prepared. maybe you got extremely lucky and she didnt hit you with some of her more devestating spells. (earthquake comes to mind). Might be simply you went when you were higher than most take her on at in level. For the Giants Sword there's several. There's a couple that are random in chests but wont bother with those as thier are easier ones to get. South East Wilderness Cathedral. 2 Death lords there that drop em. (one of the more promising battles if you go there at low teens IMO. Mt. Wilderness. Barrow in the hill near the Dungeon Pillars. 1 Death Lord there. (also a chance from one of the chests in that same place if i recall correctly. I know im missing atleast 1 or 2 more deathlords somewhere but oh well those 2 spots shouldnt be too hard specially considering your level your at (Mention of the Sane Mind spell kinda points towards what level ya are) :D PS: basically "Every Death Lord mob drops a giants sword" |
yeah my guys are about 16-18
So maybe im kinda at a high level where nessie isnt such a challenge. I think ive been doing things in the wrong order or something. well there is no wrong order, but i think i did sometings early that were supposed to be later in the game, and i am doing some earlier things now , like nessie. ohh well so i guess i got to go find a good battle with the death lords thanks |
hello all.
What a Great Game this is apart from some slow time sucking battle's lol I had 2 cracks at nessie and she gave me earth quake twice'and i retreated after 2 attempts and those awesome hit points the beast has. From waht i,m reading here i better get back down their and have another crack at her..was not sure what to do in this situation!! My party seems quite healthy with team at 18-19..a few levels up thanks to those pesky crabs and water sprites. My Gadgeteer's items like Strobe light and Microwave Ray came in very handy, saved my ass a few times..lol so far Bayjin has been the best area's for hard combat and i,m sure i have more to come. I am though looking for those special items required for Antone rapax armoury. 1st is a Djinn Eye. 2nd is a Modai Claw. still to be found i guess? plese only give me a place to visit would be greatly appreciated. Anyway i better get bk to the game, love reading yr great posts and tips for Wizardry and as this is my first post i,m sure it wont be my last. cheers jerry. |

Then it's a piece of cake. Cast Elemental Shield and Soul Shield then you won't have much trouble. I had to run after nessie because she always avoid melee. But I could take her in sandwich with an elemental lord and my team in a corner. I don't have a good team to deal max damage in melee and attack magic isn't very efficient against bosses. So just hacking, hacking took her out. |

SPOILER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Djinn eye is in Umpani land. Piercer Modai Claws are found after Piercer Modai battles. I guess that is obvious, sorry. Can't remember where they are though, although I have run into them many times. |
What gets me are people who come on here and boast how easy Nessie was "after reading how difficult she was."
Okay, if you have read how difficult she was... you probably had an idea what to expect, and probably prepared yourself. But for those people, who don't read on the boards everything - marching up to and facing Nessie isn't gonna be so easy. Obviously reading here, and preparing yourself, is going to make the battle that much easier. |

quote:
Originally posted by Bad Mr. Frosty:
Does anyone now where i can find the giants sword for my mook ranger.

There are two places - one in the SE Wilderness in the Temple and one in the Sea Caves after you kill the Guardian of Marten's Tomb. I killed Nessie a little too easily, too. Lots of hit points, but I drove it insane and then hacked it to pieces (and love that Boiling Blood - it does about 100-175 points of damage each time it's cast). |
Vap, you're right on the money. The first time I stumbled out of Mt. Gigas and onto Nessie I was in the 10-12 range and didn't know she was there. I got my head(s) handed to me and went off in another direction to get stronger and ponder how to get past her. By the time I got back to the shallows (from the Bayjin side the second time), I had a plan, and the characters to carry it out pretty efficiently. Now, in replays, it's a relative piece of cake.
But that first time, with no clue, it would have been quite a feat to do her in in 3 or 4 rounds. Maybe not impossible, but just about. |
Yeah - having read the board, I stocked up on canned elementals. So I threw out 6 canned elementals - while my party aced her. But if I had not been (accidently) spoiled on the board (there was no spoiler on the thread, just said "cool screen shot" - and it was a screen of Nessie then went on to talk about her and where she was) I would have been trampled on. First of all Vapra, ahhh..... nevermind.
anyway i just found it by accident too see i was just barely getting to the umpani story line even at that level i havent done somethings some others at lower levels have done. luckily when i was down there i had fought the psi sharks that were pretty hard. so after that psi shark fight i teleported out and rested then cast all buffs and went back in expecting more sharks but i found nessie instead luckily i was strong and yes i was boasting so what this game is fun, and its harder than most games around. But i have wizardry experiance back to proving grounds and ive played alot of the old hard interplay games from the mid 80's and no im not 40 im 25, but when i was a kid i was poor and could only afford old games on my old commodore 64. I guess i was lucky and i got to play those cool games back then. anyway reading the forum is fun i like to read others boast and i like to read others crying about a certain monster or situation and yes sometimes i want to be spoiled a bit. but after i have spent hours on something |
Nessie isn't too hard, even for sub-15's parties once you know what she's capable of doing. I took her out with a level 13-14 party, and one Canned Elemental (summoned two but the freak lizard snapped him in two in one round :( ) by sheer brawn.
None of her attacks are completely brutal, except maybe Concussion, and her melee is fairly weak. About the only thing you want to cross your fingers on is she won't cast Body of Stone. If she gets one off, it makes the battle about 10x longer. Personally, I think the tactic of hiding from a distance and hitting her with 1000+ arrows, stones, and bolts is a pain. Nessie can still hit the party with her magic from anywhere in or around that den of hers, and they hurt more than her melee even with max resistances. By drawing up close to Nessie, she'll go to melee 9 times out of 10. |
earthquake "owns" concussion.. as the young kids say these days.
|
I don't have a problem with Boasting about a battle...
Saying you cleaned her clock, was like a walk in the park, etc - that's all good and fine, in my opinion. :D Heck, I enjoy boasting after a battle too! But when you say: But Nessie was so easy, i killed her in about 4 rounds, no one died. Dissapointed big time. The Disappointed Big Time comment. Well of course you're gonna be disappointed, because it was "easy." Anyone reading about Nessie knows what to expect (and I assume you read about Nessie since you said: I keep on reading how hard beating nessie is. Boast away all you want, I say! Heck, boasting is fun! After all, you get to build and customize your characters, so it's worth it! But to say that you're disappointed, after reading so much about it ... just doesn't sit with me. Why complain that you're disappointed, after having already spoiled yourself with what it is, ya know? But that's just my worthless two cents. :D Vapra-whatevertherestofthenameis. :D |
My 2nd party at lev 14 just took out Nessie. The Bishop still doesn't have Elemental Shield or Summon Elemental(she changed class late and I haven't found them anywhere yet). I did have one canned elemental. I threw this in round one and put other protections on, then ran up to her in round 2. Right in front of those snarling fearsome teeth. I thought she'd swallow the whole party in one bite! I just stood there and slashed away at her 900+ points while the water elemental did some heavy damage. Her spells seemed weaker this time than in my first encounter, I didn't see Earthquake or Tsunami or Mind Flay (or whatever it was). I wonder if this is because I started battle right next to her instead of at a far distance?
|
i can see your point vapra.
But i wasnt all completely spoiled about nessie i had just read a few of the posts where people shared how hard it was. Mostly i didnt even read lots of the posts, just saw the post's subject. So i imagined that nessiem the buccanneer ghosts(which were also soo easy to kill) and the davey jones locker where somthing that happened towards the end of the game. i imagined that nessie was gonna be a super almost end of the game boss. since i kept hearing about light swords and exalibers to be what u got from her chest. Si i was dissapointed that it was soo easy, i was loooking forward to finding her later on and having her be some big lieviathan that would bring me to the brink of death just to kill her. Thats all. Besiedes i think i was mad that all i got was some crappy axe. strong axe but with a -6 initiative, plus no one uses axes for me. so worthless If i would have known i could go back and reenter the sea and kill her again and maybe get exacliber i might have tried that, but like i said i wasnt even expecting nessie yet. so i didnt save prior to killing her. |
Nessie goes into melee almost exclusively if you draw up close to her, which is a good thing.
Earthquake isn't all too terrible compared with Concussion, IMO. With resists, she'll do say 10-30 damage per character where with Concussion she can do upwards of 80-100 to one member and can KO him/her. Of course, complete reversal when YOUR party uses it against other mobs, different story. |
Nessie is easy to kill,if you can cast 7 level Elemental Shield spell.
|
Heh - BMF (lol, I like that) ...
I can fully understand. I knew not where Nessie was but knew the general area of her location (what 'zone' she was in) - so I was prepared and was still thrilled to find her (thought she looked awesome). While beating her and checking the chest, I didn't get Excalibur. I even fought her three times. Didn't get it (and I had restored to outside). My wife, who got Cane of Corpus (as did I, but didn't have any Ninja Faerie) and Excalibur. :D So when I replay the game, I am gonna beat Nessie into the ground until she hands me Excalibur. :D |
Man, I don't know how in the heck you guys can possibly beat nessie that easily. What are you using to do 900+ damage in 4 rounds?
Whne I fought nessie, I was @lvl 15 and I just had to restart and try over and over again until I got lucky and had some of my spells and hits luckily disable (hold or knock out) her early. My lvl17 fighter wouldn't even do ANY damage to her about 85% of his hits and I still don't know why. He was using Bloodlust. My valk & bard would do damage when they hit, but for some reason my fighter wouldn't, unless she was unconscious or held. She resisted every every spell I threw at her 95% of the time. The only way I beat her was to put the game on easy and try over and over again. I think I finally got her on my 8th try, and like I said that was just because I got lucky and my spells happened to work on her (silenced her first round), then the robot monk guy paralyzed her with that T'Rang rod that you gotta steal from that room on his first hit. She was paralyzed until she was down to < 100Hps and I was able to finish her off from there. I don't understand how you guys do so much damage to her and avoid taking damage from her. Hell, her spells would kill in one hit half the time, and about 20% of the melee hits she got on me caused a swallow. Either you guys are partially full of it, or you're just very lucky. j |

A fighter already berzerks naturally, its better to give him a demonsbane or something more powerfull if u got it. My fighter uses demonsbane and Diamond Eyes. level 18 he was i think. But the most important thing u can do on ur first round with nessie is this. Well let me just tell u what i did. Bishop cast a level 5 eye for an eye on my feable minded fighter. Priest cast level 7 silence. Ranger shoot her arrow Fairy ninja drink superman samurai drink superman Fighter drink superman Then i cast stuff like haste, soul shield,armormelt,dehydrate....etc. my melee guys keep hitting till nessie died really fast. And no its not pure luck yes this is a hard game. But unlike what most people might think, a real CRPG take some aquired skill to play well. Just like games like Counter-strike and Starcraft take some skill so does this. Im sure other veteran players here prolly guys like vapra, have picked up certain skills from playing other games of this genre. Always cover every part of the map. Always use as much of your magic as possible if it helps you grow faster. Always use your worst ammo for ranged attackers. save all good ammo for the late game unless you absolutely need it. Use the weapons u are training in even if u pick up better weapons. Then when u get to a boss battle switch to the better weapon. Always keep ur party supplied with the potions or powders that used for emergencies or big battles than might pop up. Ohh dont waste those potions and powders,. use ur spells instead and save those items for important battles. Save your money. Go slow.. take your time.. so u dont miss secrets or hints. Write important shit down. Damn i remeber when we had to not only right down the hints but also graph the dungeons as u went so u could get out afterwards. specialize as much as you can. even if u end up picking the specialty that isnt the best at least you will be reall good at a few things and not mediocre at a lot things. Try to play big battles like if you were playing a strategy game. move by move. ohh and never play in easy. your charachters wont develop all the way. Now of topic. Wouldnt it be cool if some other publisher made an online expansion that let you pit your party in a battle against other people's parties. To enter the fight you would have to put in an item that your party had, and the other party would put an equally valuable item. and the winner takes the item. Like a giants sword for a mook ranger. traded for Cane of Corpus for a fairy ninja. or spiders silk for a venom crab shell hehe. I dont have any RPC's either. I try to always have each of my guys carry some superman potions and ressurect powder. |
When I encountered Nessie, I took care of her in under 4 rounds thanks to critical kill. Just like all skill, if you concentrate on its development it's devastating.
|
I would like to stop using Bloodlust with my fighter, but infortunately something weird has happened with him. When I give him another sword, he only gets one attack per round and one swing. With Bloodlust he gets 2-3 attackers per round with 2-4 swings per attack.
I know that he will get LESS attacks without Bloodlust since its initiative is so high, but he should be getting more than one. He even got more than one back when he was level 5 or 6 and I hand't even gotten Bloodlust. Anyway, I know how to play with strategy, I too have been playing since the old days. I still have my handmade maps on graph paper from Wiz I. However, unless your skills were massively higher than mine, luck has everything to do with the fact that your spells actually functioned on Nessie. That one silence I got on her was the only non-damage spell that she did not totally resist during my 8 tries to beat her. Damage spells actually worked about 50% of the time, but she would only take 1-8 points from it, which was hardly helping. I was casting all spells at the highest level I could. I haven't had any trouble with any other parts of the game thus far. The rinjynn (SP?) were pretty tough, but I still made it through there on my first try with just having to ressurect one character once. Now, I don't spend any time just sitting around casting for no reason to increase my skills like some people do, but I still can't see my skills being THAT much lower than others of a comparable level to make nessie able to resist them so much better. My alchemist had about 20 powercast skill at the time I think (can't really remember). So anyway, what were you doing so much damage with that you were able to average over 200Hps a round to her?? My spells that she didn't manage to resist outright were only doing about 2-10hps at their max level I could cast and my fighter, when he was able to do damage, would get about 50hps worth each round. With my other guys all added up, I was doing about 100-120 per round if everybody hit and penetrated, and that was with her held/sleeping. Without sleep, take 50hps off since my fighter for some reason did NONE every hit. Very strange. Are nessie's stats randomized at all?? Mabye I just got a tougher spawn of her than normal or something....???/ j |

Use Fang, Dread spear, etc. (weapons that are decent dmg). For Nessie you dont need to cats on her. All you need to do is put up superman and make sure you have either the Heal All spell or a couple of Heal All scrolls. You shouldnt be dying in 1 cast of a spell/breath attack at level 15 unless you havent been putting up spells such as Soul Shield, Elemental Shield & Magic Screen. Putting up Eye 4 Eye will add some dmg to her fi she "does" cast a spell on you. My normal party that i like to play when im bored is of a: Felpurr Samurai - Fang - Enchanted Waz. Fairie Ninja - Cane of Corpus - Sai/Sprites Dagger Rogue - Bloodlust - Thieves Dagger Bard - 3x X-Bow - Hunter Quarrels 2x Elf Bishops. Doom Staff on 1 Bishop. Disruptor Mace on other with shield. With that group at level 15 i could take down Nessie without breaking a sweat or having a character die. On another note so you know how those characetrs are developed. this is how i work on my stats for each char. Class---1st stats-2nd stats Samurai-Spd & Str-Dex & Sen Ninja---Spd & Str-Dex & Sen Rogue---Spd & Dex-Str & Sen Bard----Spd & Sen-Dex & Int (i get str upto 60 then use 2 Rings of the Road) Bishops-Int & Pie-Str & Vit [ 03-02-2002: Message edited by: Mage_77 ]
|
it sounds like u are attacking plainly instead of with the berserk ability with ur other weapons
another thing is that my 2 main casters both have maxxed out intelligence and piety and one almost maxxed powercast the other is at about 65 the superman potions help alot and if eye for an eye takes care of most of her magic if silence doesnt work. also equip someone with a weapon that stuns or paralyzes if u can my ninja uses CoC and Nunchaka, i believe both have a good chance to paralyze. And i did paralyze nessie so taht made my attacks even better on her. i really dont know what else could be wrong with ur fighter. i have him with powerstrike at about 50 plus i have my guys equip amulets of dex, speed, strenth. ohh and about the casting at all times for no reason, i dont like that, kinda not too fun. i cast spells as much as possible during combat and out of combat if applicable i always have my buffs on even if im shoping or doing some misc. tasks in a town. |

He was just too easy for a final boss. No... I had not read any posts on this subject. Maybe the experience that I had from playing the game made it easy. I just casted shielding spells from my priest and mage and then just attacked Dark with melee attacks and healing when necessary. I had Vi with me so she just attacked on her own as I had no control over her. I did summon an elemental which drew some of the Darks attacks away from my party. After about 8 rounds he was a gonner. Nessie on the other hand was a major battle for my party and it felt like a real accomplishment to kill her. :D Guess a lot might depend on your parties makeup. I now am playing Wizards and Warriors but have a fealing that it will soon be left alone. I really miss my characters talking to me like happens in Wiz 8. My characters in Wiz and Warriors just havent made me care about them. Well it really depends what equipment you had at the time you fought her and how good your characters' combat skills were. When it came down to crunch time, here's how my fight went (we were level 13-14). Fighter - Berserk with Sword of 4 Winds, 90+ damage Samurai - speed of Lightning twice with Bushido, 15-30 damage Lord - Berserk Bloodlust and Diamond Eyes, 35-50 damage RFS-81 - Fists and Kicks, 3 rounds of attacks, 'nuff said. Bard - stringing Dulcimer and beating Rousing Drums, while stabbing with Vorpal Blade Ranger - Mystic Arrows doing 10-30 damage twice Of course, casting a good level 6 Armormelt helps tremendously. Add that all up and you have one giant cooked lizard. [ 03-02-2002: Message edited by: Annheiser ]
|
Okay, you guys obviously had FAR superior equipment to me at this point in the game. Bloodlust is the most powerful sword I have (and still have now at lvl 20). I have found nothing better than that and the demon thing. I also have only found a total of 40 Viper arrows so far, and I stop at every shop when I happen past it to check too.
How do you guys find all these cool weapons? My valk's (2) are using a mystic spear and a stun rod. RFS-81 or whatever is using that weird rod that you have to steal from the T'Rang (that is a prototype). My fighter has Bloodlust and a shield. My priest has some lame staff, my bard has a mediocre bow (I bought it from Croc, I think its like + 20% damage or something), and my alchy has a wrist rocket. These are the weapons I've been with since I first past Trynton and got to Marten's Bluff & the swamp (where I got the bow, wrist rocket, and Trang rods). I've gotten as far as Rapax rift, where I just gave the staff of ash to that guy, and I still haven't found anything better (didn't get CRAP outta davy jones locker..it was like some potions or something). I am putting my fighter into berzerk mode with normal weapons, I don't know why he got screwed up. I posted that question a while ago on here but nobody could come up with any ideas. It even says "goes berzerk on..." so I know it's working, but he only gets one attack & one swing. So basically I am stuck with Bloodlust for the rest of the game because no other sword could possibly be better with that massive handicap. Anyway,I'm not too worried about it. Like I said I haven't had too much trouble with anything thus far except nessie and the rynjinn, which were tough but I still handled them ok. The Rapax are pushovers so far. The priests and initiates seem to be much weaker spellcasters than the rynjinn were. |
jfunk:
For polearms - Bela in Mt. Wilderness sells a nice spear. Rod similar to the Prototype mindrod that Sadok(t'rang merchant) sells has better dmg but slightly less stat effects & no spell charges. South East Wilderness has a sword called "Fang" thats a placed item so it will be there every game you play. Vorpal blade which is a decent sword is a random drop on Rapax patrol mobs in Mt. WIlderness.(its not really common drop but it isnt rare either). |
Okay, you guys obviously had FAR superior equipment to me at this point in the game. Bloodlust is the most powerful sword I have (and still have now at lvl 20).
Well in terms of front line... My Lord has Bloodlust, also. My Valk has a um - War Lance or something? Can't recall where I got it. Dropped off a monster if I remember correctly. And some other type of normal lance. My thief has a Thief Dagger (I think it's called) which does poison randomly. My archer has a bow (and a mace of some kind). My faerie priest has a staff of some kind, but never attacks. Same with my mage, who has a fire staff he just got in Rapax, but never attacks either. My general tactic is: If monster is in range, attack it with melee and spells. If not in range, ranger shoots arrows, priest cast shield of some kind, and mage casts summon elemental at highest sphere. So for me, it's not the killer weapons, but the killer spells. Some people will LOAD/RESTORE where they know good weapons drop. Like the *LIGHT* *SWORD*, Excalibur, Cane of Corpus, etc. Me, I just load up with defensive spells with the priest, then damage spells with my mage, and let the melee do what they can. I have found nothing better than that and the demon thing. I also have only found a total of 40 Viper arrows so far At level 20? Really? That is very weird... very weird indeed. I find arrows of all kinds, everywhere. (I also have a portal set at Crock's to buy arrows). |
dude dont use the bloodlust with your fighter man.
its prolly whats messing up ur fighter. maybe the berserking feature of the bloodlust is interfering with you innate fighter berserking ability. ohh by the way its prolly a good idea too have ur fighter also have a ranged attack since fighters have no magic. another good idea for fighters is that they dont have much to do skills wise. so u might want to take advantage of the extra skill points and dualwield him, as well as make him a good bowman. I really dont use a shield with a fighter since they can already wear the strongest armor, plus they have so high hit points plus u should be getting iron skin early on also. So u really dont need the extra protection, so might as well use ur other hand for another weapon. I gots the diamond eyes on his offhand. |
To get EXCALIBUR SWORD, You reload the file before entering NESSIE AREA. That means the contents of chest are set when you first time entered the AREA. So you reload the files before entering BAJIN SHALLOWS. GOOD LUCK!!
|

quote:
How do you guys find all these cool weapons?

Patience, my man. It's all about the reload function. Seriously, it is all about patience. I went through a couple of save & reloads to grab the weapons. Did you go through the T'Rang/Umpani missions before going into the Sea Saves? Here are where I got my weapons. Sword of 4 Winds - Lucky enough to get two. Pickpocketed Balbrack for one (with 2 Filcher's Bands), and another one from a chest in the Gigas Mts. Bushido Blade - Very easy to get from Raven Rapax. Just save before you squash him, and then keep reloading over and over till he drops one. Diamond Eyes - Got one from the tomb area in the Mt. Wilderness. Arrows - I collected a bunch of Mystic and Viper arrows easily from all the shops I went through which includes Crock and if you didn't turn in the traitor, Kunar. Both of them sell very good ammo. Just keep camping 24 hours while working on your magic to stock up. Or if you have tons of patience, you can run by Nessie and jump up the first air pocket thing, RUN AWAY from Nessie until combat ends, and do the save/reload thing with the Buccaneer's to grab a Light Sword. Then, engage Nessie. |
