Good Grief!!! The entrance fight is unreal. One sorceress queen, 2 Death Lords, and 6 cultists. The cultists then summon elementals. If I'm lucky, I can silence them but the death lords and sorceress queen still kick my but. My party is avg. 13 level. Even with magic screen and haste, I can't find a strategy. I don't really see how increasing a couple of levels is going to help. The death lords can cast death cloud, toxic cloud, and the sorceress queen has some nasty attacks too. What to do?

Fantasm 02-08-2002 09:25 PM

You're right, a couple levels won't help, but 4 or 5 more levels will. =) Keep in mind that I went through the SE Wilderness when I was level 18 or 19...not through any predetermined purpose, it just took me that long to get around to doing it with all the stuff there was to do on the 'west' side of the world. ;)

If you can cast Soul Shield and Element Shield in the first round at high levels, then you should be OK. If you're not able to do this yet, it's probably best to wait until you are. It's always good to cast Purify Air every couple rounds or so as well (you should have found a ring by now that casts it if you don't have it yet), just in case that Death Cloud gets through your defenses. Once your defenses are up, just run forward as fast as you can and hack away at the Death Lords followed by the Sorceress Queen.

Another tip: Cast X-Ray, then walk out and stand in the entrance-way to the huge room for a few seconds, then duck back out behind the wall. When I did this, the Sorceress Queen and the 2 Death Lords started moving towards the doorway, leaving the Cultists behind. They won't come all the way to the door, but quite a bit closer, so when you go back into the room and combat starts, you'll be able to close in on them much quicker (again, don't move 'til you have all your defensive spells up).

Hope this helps. Good luck!

First of all you must cast "Soul and Element shield" magic screen, enchanted blade and eye for an eye spell then cast summon elementale then run up to the cultist`s and kill them asap then the D.Lords and the Queen also have one to cast "purifye air spell to get those clouds to dissapear!

Thanks. Knowing this fight isn't expected of me at 13th level helps. I just hate leaving unfinished business. Oh well, I'll get over it. Thanks for the spell suggestions. I don't have any of the spells that you mentioned except magic screen. I'll wait till I get purify air and soul and element shield. Thanks again.

Perhaps this may be considered the coward's way to win this battle but it worked like a charm for me....

Around the sides of the temple is an area shaped like a cone where you can tuck the party in and only one enemy can attack you (physically) at a time. So I ran in and initiated battle and then ran around the side. In between I cast soul shield (I always walk around with magic screen and armourplate) and take a potion or two for added help.

Eventually the Death Lords come out and I kill them one at a time. Then the elementals. Then battle stops. After a little rest or heal I run in and take out the mages. Did it first time!! ;) Around level 16 mind you...

The only way I got through it was much like the above post.. I think I may have been even lower level than you then.. like around 11 or so, I think.. But I inched around the corner just enough to start the fight thinking, "Ok, I'll just back up and let em come to me.. they won't be able to see me, so can't cast any of the nasty spells until I've got eye for an eye (via potions) on most of my chars, among other buffs. Unfortunately, at the time I hadn't used many of the area spells so didn't realize you could target a specific point and base the area off that.. So I still managed to lose a few people right off the bat. The queen was the first to come round the corner into my melee range. I took her out, but by then all I had left were my two fighters, both low on health and insane . So I took off running down the stairs and continued down the path. Eventually the enemies got so strung out that all I had left more or less keeping up with me was 1 cultist, who by herself didn't hurt much. So I took the time to resurrect my party and kill her. Then the fight was over, so I rested. At this point I just made my way back up the path, killed the 2 knights one at a time and was just left with a group of 3 cultists. It was by far the most frustrating (all the reloading before this scene), but at the same time the most fun part of the game I've had yet..

I like ranged attacks myself. One quicksand spell is usually enough to remove the cultists. Paralyzing ammo, like medusa stones and mystic arrows, are good for this fight. You need at least three people with bows; each has some mystic arrows and takes a different target. If you have a gadgeteer, make sure the ammo in use is medusa stones. Ditto for RFS, if he's in the party and using a sling.

With a little luck, by the end of the first round the cultists will be history and at least one of the big three will be paralyzed. When you've got all three stuck, rush up and pound on them. They will go fast, as immobile targets always take more damage.

you can do it aroung lvl 16. First, as others have said, you should always have missile/magig shield, enchanted blade, and armorplate. First round have your casters use soul/element shield. Have a non-ranged specialist use a canned elemental. Others may want to use a superman potion. Have a number of different cahratures with resurect powder and also have healing items spread aroung. Healing amulates are really helpful. Second round, charge the first death knight. (One will often charge while the other stys back with the queen. If your caster can cast silence or a bard with the lyre, keep hitting at the death knights and the queen. They are whimps without their spells. Make sure that you anticipate healing needs and when in doubt, cast heal all. (This will also heal your elementals.)

I had a similar problem with a relatively low-level party. I stopped that party there and have created a new party and am starting over. Good to know I can go back to my party at the Temple and just go somewhere else.

Is there a reason to deal with all those nasties at the Temple, other than to amass points?

Without being too spoilish, I'll just say that there are few items that can be put to good use by your friendly neighborhood hornhead, plus a couple of other goodies... ;)

But, I don't believe that it is necessary to clear the temple in order to advance or complete the main storyline.

I believe I was around level 15 or 16 when I did this battle. You must have Magic Screen, Armorplate, Missile Screen, and Enchanted Blade active before the battle. I managed it by moving to the doorway triggering the battle then first round casting element shield, soul shield, and eye for an eye. Second round I moved around the corner just slightly. The Death Knights kindly casted Death Cloud on me which rebounded and killed the elementals and most of the sorcerers. They started to charge me indvidually and I easily beat them down. Then I walked in and mopped up the Death Knights. I think I had a few character deaths but I resurected them during the battle.

Solomon 02-11-2002 04:13 PM

No, you don't have to clear the temple, but think of the sense of accomplishment you'll feel if you work out a way for your party to do it. Not to mention that you might find something you like in there.

I wouldn't advocate trying it until you have the big protection spells, though...which makes me wonder, has anybody out there fought this battle successfully with a melee-based party?

jsteng 02-11-2002 05:25 PM

I just finished this last night.

What I did was simply to get their attention on the first round.
Then run away and HIDE on the second round at this time, the cultist would have summoned elementals.
Then the Queen will rush you but since you are hidden from the rest, they wont follow. Only the queen WILL follow through.
At this point you have an 8 vs 1 queen combat. easy fight.

Then you can lure the others using Lava Lamp or hypnotic lure.

I was lucky to have a bard using that heal all guitar. I literrally am 100% health every round. my bishop keeps on REST ALL. and the 6 keeps on attacking.

I had little luck going head on with the bunch as like you, my party was level 12~14.

RovingDarkness 02-12-2002 08:21 AM

I'm missing *way* too many spells to deal with the temple for quite some time, from the look of it. My priest and psionic just aren't up to it and won't be for a level or three, I guess.

All you need is a cleric with Instant Death spell at a high lvl i got picks of before battle and during with elementals and 1 dead cultist. Just have magic screen and soul shield on and rush them. there elementals are just as weak as yours my rogue only uses spiked stone for knock-out so does my robot make sure you get your elemental with all your boosts or he will die quick too...
