now I have a problem here
remember the duergar's group at the first level?

I have 3 burning hands, 3 spook, 3 orb, 3 magic missle
1 skull trap, 1 slow
3 stone skin
1 flame arrow (scroll)
1 lichor drain (scroll)

I dont want to rest, I want to beat them with current spellls, without pause... how? I tried the following strategy

go in with stoneskin
then horror in the middle of enemy group
another stone skin

then skull trap

this plan is supposed to work if I am not on insane difficulty. I have 32 HP, so you know I die pretty fast... :D no time for potions

I want to beat the group, not one at a time. so any suggestions?

take em out with fireballs and magic missiles (there is a fireball scroll in the portal room). dont bother with melee fighting or stoneskin - pretty useless.
Fear may work, though.

Galadria 12-03-2001 07:35 AM

Horror will work, but I just have Imoen cast Cloudkill. Works like a charm.

250 12-03-2001 07:47 AM

guys, I am soloing

Ares 12-03-2001 09:07 AM

Your strategy sounds simple enough, but maybe thats the problem.

Dont try to melee the group, and remember, about 3 of them have crossbows or something like that. Cast horror, the cast MM on the leader (Lychis?) take him out, then the mage, then the ranged wussies (i HATE bows and their ilk). Skull trap might take out the mage and maybe really hurt the leader. Your going to have to pause, otherwise this battle cant be won. :(

Stand just out of sight of the first two and hit them with the slow spell. Then charge into the room, and fire your skull trap at the mage in the middle. I believe there is a mage and a cleric standing near each other. That should pretty much take two or three out right away. As soon as the skull trap goes off, run back up to the left. This will draw the two by the door with you. Seeing as they should be slowed by now. Hit one of them with a spook, hopefully he's walking around scared now. Hit the other with a flame arrow and magic missile. This should take him out. Take advantage of the slow spooked one and bash away with your melee weapon or burning hands. Use Magic Missiles, Burning hands and chromatic orbs on any survivors. Might work.

hehe, nope, do you guys play sorc? :D

Dundee Slaytern 12-03-2001 12:27 PM

Mitro is soloing a Sorcerer as well, but it is not possible to cast Skull Trap and Slow together, seeing as how you only have one cast left for level 3 spells.

What Bhaalspawn powers do you have besides Horror?

Well, you don't mention yourself being a sorc anywhere in there, and its conceivable that you got lucky on scrolls.

Regardless, you need to look at what you've got. Flame Arrow is useless, as it will only hit one guy. I have no idea what "lichor drain" is, but I'm assuming Larloch's Minor Drain, also useless in this fight.

I would say, cast a Stoneskin (always have this on as a solo sorc), wait 5 seconds (so your next round comes up, and move so that Ilyich engages in dialogue. Then cast a Slow at where he was initially standing. This should hit every Duergar. Spook the spellcasters (2 of em) and Orb Ilyich (he's the most dangerous).

I would suggest myself to restart and pick Spider Spawn instead of Stoneskin for your first 4th level slot, to give yourslef some beefy allies. Also, it cannot hurt to rest up before Duergar battles, a solo Sorc on Insane at this "young age" should be easy to kill by a pack of Duergar. You don't have Wish yet, so suck it up and take a nap.

no nap, me almost beat them

Ocasionally..

Sorry, didn't remember you were a sorcerer. Okay, I've got it now. I'm assuming your stoneskined now. Cast horror at the two by the door. Smack the mage in the middle with your skull trap. That should do some good damage to three of them. Hit the one in the BEST condition with flame arrow. Preferably taking out one of the archers. Hit three others with chromatic orbs and hope they fail their saves and be paralyzed for 2 turns. Probably be stoneskinning again about now. Hopefully you can use your lichor drain (if needed) and outlast their attacks.

Legolas 12-03-2001 05:29 PM

Tricky. There are quite a number of duergar there and you hardly have area effect spells.

Don't use the slow, use the skull trap instead. But only once they can all be affected by it. Then use orb and orb on the two most dangerous remaining duergar, followed by either another orb or the missile, your drain and your arrow. You'll probably have a sling to do some damage once the real threat is gone, but if things go badly just use spook on one and run, then rest.

I know you don't want to, but there's nothing wrong with a bit of sleep sometimes.

Are you soloing a sorceror on insane without reloading and a maximum of ten rests? Impressive

EDIT: Oh, yeah. Get an invisibility next time you level so you can sneak past the baddies you can't really handle ;)

Mitro Jellywadder 12-03-2001 05:35 PM

Okay, disregard that last message. After six quick-loads, that obviously won't work. That dang mage and his flame arrow. Back to the drawing board. Chromatic orb is terrible against these guys. I have yet to have one fail a save.

Mitro Jellywadder 12-03-2001 08:06 PM

250,

Hopefully your past this already.. :D You had my interest for a while. I've beaten the fight 3 times out of a total of 25 battles. Definitely ranks up there, considering the spells to work with.

Same tactics for pretty much the last fifteen battles. Use Horror first. Try to start casting just before Illyich begins to talk, and aim a little bit behind him. By the time the ability goes off, you could hit 4 of the dwarfs. That'd be great, but usually it only effects Illyich and one of the other two in the front.

Each of the three battles that I won was when at least two of the first three were scared. I immediately headed down on the screen until the mage came into view and fire off a magic missile. By the time you get the spell off, he is mirror imaged. I wasted a bunch of skull traps, only to do no damage to the mage. However, if you kill one of the bad guys near him, he freaks out usually. I happened to get lucky this way in the third battle. Otherwise, it's one flame arrow and I was toast.

Use the magic missile to get rid of his images and you will get one or two hits in also. Then cast a skull trap directly at him, wherever he is. You will get at least two more in the radius. Stoneskin about now. Use your flame arrow on Illyich to finish him off. Magic missile the one with the least damage and attack everyone else with your sling. You still have one magic missile left. Keep it until you run out of stoneskins. Then unleash it on one of the dwarfs when a couple of them turn back to hostile. Once you kill another of them, more than likely the rest panic anyways. Then you can stand back and pelt them with stones.

The last battle I used every spell except the scroll of minor drain. I ended up with 20/32 hit points and threw 10 bullets.

(Oh yeah, feel free to grab the two potions of extra healing on the second table. :D )

Here's a link to the pictures. Tough Battle
